During fiscal year 2006-07, more than 400 healthcare providers
looked to HCSC for the programs and services their organizations
require to efficiently deliver superior patient care. Their
ongoing trust in us is apparent, as corporate revenues exceeded
$80,000,000.
As always, Miller-Keystone Blood Center remained at the forefront
of the blood banking industry, as several key laboratory, collection
and recruitment initiatives contributed to another successful year.
Among the many changes and innovations, one aspect of our
organization will never change – our unwavering commitment to
education. Over the past year, the HCS Education Fund distributed
grants to organizations throughout the region, including
Cedar Crest College, Lehigh Valley Childcare, Pinebrook Services
for Children and Youth, ProJeCt, Sayre Child Center, Second
Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley and Northeast PA, and
the Weller Health Education Center.
Over the past year, HCSC’s Laundry and Linen Services division
also implemented a variety of initiatives to provide increased
productivity, quality enhancement and cost-effectiveness for
our members.
In addition, HCSC’s annual Student Volunteer and Blood Donor
Recruitment scholarships were presented to 13 exceptional high
school students in recognition of their hard work and dedication
to our organization.
Bolstered by our ongoing relationships with MAGNET and
MedAssets, HCSC-Group Purchasing continued to provide
members with a variety of alternatives for every healthcare
purchasing need.
As we look to the future, we recognize that the needs of our
members constantly change, and we, as an organization, will
change with them. This provides us with a broader perspective
and a sharper focus, enabling us to turn our vision into reality.
were implemented in order to reduce energy consumption.
At the Asbury Park (NJ) plant, a new heat reclamation system
and state-of-the-art tunnel extractors were installed, yielding
significant reductions in energy usage. Activities at the
Baltimore (MD) plant included an upgrade of our energy
systems insulation, and in Camden (NJ), we upgraded the
plant’s condensate return unit.
In addition to completing a heat reclamation project, the
Kingston (PA) plant also created a recycling program for
plastic, paper and cardboard. This new project reduces the
current labor associated with sorting the plastic from the
trash, moving it to and loading the dumpster. This also helps
to prevent plastic from getting into machinery.
Upgrades to the Garment System information processes
include enhancements to electronic transfers and a redesign
of billing applications to track changes more effectively. And,
2
to help our customers better understand summary invoices,
our Laundry division modified statements to include detailed
linen billing for items processed, but not owned, by HCSC.
Bariatric TIV gown. The gown is size 10XL, with snap
sleeves and a sewn-in telemetry pocket. This gown helps
to meet not only the needs of this sensitive population,
but also that of the caregiver.
As always, HCSC’s Account Relations staff continued to focus
on activities aimed at reducing linen losses for our members.
A continued emphasis was placed on its highly successful “Bag
and Return” program designed to help eliminate losses associated
with EMS transports. As part of this project, a new disposable
bath-sized towel for EMS use was introduced this past year.
of quality and service for their patients. And as we continue to find
ways to extend the benefits of our partnerships with MAGNET and
MedAssets, and the innovations of other valued vendors, we look to
a future wholly focused on customer service.
This year, SAM Medical, a new MAGNET contract vendor, introduced
CELOX tm , a proprietary marine biopolymer designed to control
high-volume arterial bleeding. FDA approved, it is suitable for many
applications, from superficial wounds to deep arterial bleeds. And
equally important, CELOX tm works in hypothermic conditions and
heparinized blood and generates no heat.
As always, saving facilities money and providing superior equipment
remain at the forefront of every materials manager. Fukuda
Denshi, a world leader in Cardiology Instrumentation, Patient
Monitoring and Ultrasound Technologies, is one of the many
contracted vendors that help our members realize these savings.
Denshi’s transparent and dependable medical technology delivers
critical information easily, clearly, quickly and reliably. And, they
stand by their technology with a five-year warranty.
Air Movement Technologies is another contracted vendor that
delivers exceptional solutions for our member facilities – big or
small. Among its offerings, AirMatt provides a safe transfer system
that moves patients comfortably while reducing caregiver injuries.
4
Balancing the financial concerns of today’s healthcare environment
with the need to provide quality care for long-term patients can be a
daunting task. AirMatt addresses this concern with its Memory-Matic
Safety Brake, which automatically engages when a person exits the
wheelchair – ensuring a safe exit. The brake remains on until the
chair rider safely returns, helping to prevent injuries and falls.
HCSC’s Pharmacy Program also continues to focus on members’
needs by providing services beyond pharmaceutical pricing.
Through its affiliation with MedAssets, the group offers programs
to make the pharmacy more cost-effective for our participants with
real-time contract pricing. HCSC/MedAssets also offers the Clinical
Pharmacy program in addition to its comprehensive portfolios and
presents members with monthly, accredited continuing education
Another visionary company offering cutting-edge technology is Ivivi
programs and teleconferences.
Technologies, which leads the industry in the adjunctive, palliative
treatment of post-operative pain and swelling. Ivivi’s SofPulse tm
uses its patented, non-invasive non-pharmacologic, pulsed electromagnetic
field (PEMF) technology to induce a microcurrent in
injured tissues. These microcurrents enhance the normal electrochemical
processes of the body, providing safe, effective treatment
MedAssets also provides the Merge Technology platform that links
independent systems, functional departments and people in a way
that improves data quality in revenue cycle and supply chain operations.
Ultimately, it allows providers to enhance decision-making
and cash flow operations.
without side effects, overdose or other dangers.
Hill-Rom, another quality leader in the industry, recently restructured
its focus to offer many new products for the long-term care
market. The company looks at this environment from a broader
perspective and strives to assess needs, design solutions and assist in
implementation. It follows up with an evaluation of the results while
Each of our partners brings unique perspective, customized solutions
and a shared vision for our members. They replace multiple
vendors by becoming one, very powerful strategic business partner.
And whether working with a large integrated delivery network or a
small rural hospital, they prove their value by helping our members
ensure high-quality care – time and time again.
carefully collaborating all aspects with the member being served.
Another valued partner, MedAssets, helps hospitals find cash from
existing operations and improve margins so providers can continue
to effectively serve their communities. MedAssets addresses cost and
revenue issues simultaneously with proprietary technology that increases
visibility and allows hospitals to realistically assess profitability.
As always, quality remains at the forefront of Miller-Keystone’s
Miller-Keystone’s Donor Testing Services division presented our
Laboratory Services at several conferences throughout the region
this year, including AABB (American Association of Blood Banks),
MAABB (Mid-Atlantic Association of Blood Banks), NYBBP (New
York Blood Bank Professionals), BBANYS (Blood Bank Association
of New York State) and NJSBBP (New Jersey Society of Blood
Bank Professionals).
Our Laboratory also welcomed Abbott Prism® into our testing
operations. This fully automated, high-volume screening instrument
consolidates many of our testing operations into a single
system, reducing the risk of accidents and errors by automating
manual testing procedures. It also minimizes the steps currently
used to screen blood.
MKBC recently added the new Abbott Prism System into
its Laboratory operations. This blood screening instrument
consolidates many of our testing operations into a single
automated system, reducing the number of times a test
sample is handled, improving operating safety and
efficiency for the Blood Center.
6
In addition, the Blood Center continued to prepare for conversion
to the ISBT labeling system, which will be mandatory for
all blood banking organizations by May of 2008. This system,
established by the International Society of Blood Transfusion
(ISBT), is recognized as the standard in uniform labeling.
This past year, the Blood Center added the new Haemonetics
Cymbal ® technology, which enables us to increase automated
collections at mobile locations. Cymbal ® is highly portable
and designed for ease of use and donor comfort while collecting
two units of red blood cells from one donor during a single
donation. This new technology complements the Gambro
Trima® automated collections system currently employed at
our donor centers.
two mini-bloodmobile vehicles and four fleet set-ups for
onsite bloodmobile drives.
Upgrades were also made to our automated collections
software, the Gambro Vista Information System ® , and our
online donor screening module, BloodGuard ® , enabling us
to determine donor eligibility more quickly, and accommodate
changes to suitability questions. These upgrades also
enhanced data transfers to SafeTrace, our state-of-the-art
blood banking system.
More than 2000 blood drives were held over the past year
at area businesses, churches and community organizations,
as well as 75+ regional high schools and colleges. In addition,
our five fixed-site donor centers (located in Allentown,
Bethlehem, Easton, Hazleton and Reading, PA) continued to
provide a convenient alternative for our donors, presenting
them with opportunities to donate seven days per week, with
At the start of the fiscal year, the Blood Center welcomed a
morning, afternoon and evening times available.
new bloodmobile vehicle to our fleet, bringing the number of
available blood collection units to four full-sized bloodmobiles,
a Blood Center Endowment Fund, in addition to our two signature
fundraising events, the “Cruise Aboard the LifeLine” and
the “Flight for Life.” Other initiatives included the solicitation
of foundation and corporate grants, as well as corporate and
individual financial support. Many of the funds were allocated
for the purchase of Automated Cell Processors (ACPs) – stateof-the-art
equipment that prolongs the storage of frozen blood
products by an additional 14 days in the event of a disaster
or an epidemic. This technology provides a valuable crisismanagement
tool for supplementing the blood supply.
More than 400 volunteers donated their time and talent to
the Blood Center this past year, providing nearly 21,000
hours of service as donor aides, canteen attendants, office
support and special event volunteers. Their tremendous
efforts were honored at our annual spring recognition
event, while various local media and volunteer associations
throughout the region paid special tribute to a number of our
outstanding individuals.
