Sandra Diaz-Thomas, Director of Donor
Resources. “The awards are classified into
Senator Lisa Boscola Addresses
Three Keynote Speakers Share
Their Personal Stories
SENATOR LISA BOSCOLA was the guest
speaker at this year's Donor Group
Recognition, held on March 23, 2005.
“The Blood Center was honored to
welcome Senator Boscola as the guest
speaker at this year's event,” says
Sandra Diaz-Thomas, Director of Donor
Resources. “We were pleased to have
her take part in an event that honors so
many within our local communities.”
In 2004, Senator Boscola introduced
legislation proposing that all high
school students in 11th and 12th grade
learn about the importance of donating
blood as part of their health curriculum.
“Only about five percent of eligible men
and women donate blood,” said Senator
Boscola at the time. “The reason is simply a lack of knowledge, but in this case, a lack of
knowledge can be dangerous and sometimes fatal. The only way to avoid blood shortages
in the future is to educate and encourage more people to donate blood. We need to
start educating our citizens at a young age about the benefits of giving back to their
community by donating blood. This is literally a matter of life and death.”
PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
State Senator Lisa Boscola lauds the efforts of
the many blood drive coordinators in attendance.
THE THEME OF THIS YEAR'S EVENT WAS “THE GIFT OF LIFE: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE,”
which was represented through three guest speakers sharing their personal stories of how
blood donation has impacted their lives.
Harvey Hohl of Berks County (PA) spoke on behalf of himself and his wife, Susan, and
told the story of their late daughter, Angela. (See related article page 6.)
Megan Bowers of the Lehigh Valley (PA) has lived with MS for nearly 10 years. She is a
wife, and mother of two young children. In May 2003, she experienced severe unexplained
bruising and petechia, and felt extremely fatigued. She was later diagnosed with
TTP (Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Pupura), an autoimmune disease that can be fatal.
That night started the first of over 90 plasmapheresis treatments (totaling over 600 units
of plasma), and Megan is now in remission.
In early 2003, Alicia Rodriguez of the Lehigh Valley (PA) was diagnosed with Acute
Myeloid Leukemia, a very aggressive form of cancer that took over her body in a matter of
days. She spent over four months in a Philadelphia hospital, where she received an assortment
of both traditional and experimental treatments. During her time in the hospital, Alicia
underwent numerous transfusions of both red blood cells and platelets. Now in remission,
she is a full-time student.
Angela’s Story …
The 1st annual Angela Hohl Memorial Blood Drive took place on November 10, 2003, and in Angela’s honor, Miller-Keystone
Blood Center is pleased to present the annual Angela Hohl Memorial Award to the high school that achieves the highest percent
increase in blood drive participation. This is Angela’s story, as told by her parents, Harvey and Susan, of Berks County (PA).
Angela was a beautiful, healthy, 17-yearold
young lady full of physical strength and
stamina developed from years of swimming
and working as a lifeguard. She was in the top
15 of her class and about to enter her senior
year of high school.
In early August 2003, Angela found out she
was suffering from Acute Monolytic
Leukemia, which invaded her lungs without
ANGELA HOHL
any warning. This rare type of Leukemia is
found in less than one percent of the population. After being
diagnosed, Angela received red blood cells and platelets to help
rebuild and sustain her blood count after her chemotherapy
treatments. Unfortunately, only 26 days after her diagnosis,
Angela lost her battle with Leukemia on August 28, 2003.
In honor of their daughter, Harvey and Susan Hohl, along
with Daniel Boone High School (Birdsboro, PA), hosted a blood
drive on November 10, 2003. That day, over 150 people lined up
to donate blood in Angela’s memory in the high school cafeteria.
Many students acknowledged what Angela went through, and for
them, donating blood was something that they could do in honor
of her memory. This passionate response reflects what a wonderful
person Angela indeed was.
In honor of Angela and her family, Miller-Keystone Blood
Center now presents an annual award in her memory. The criteria
is a reflection of the overwhelming participation and compassion
that took place at
her very first memorial
drive. Daniel Boone
High School registered
an overwhelming 150
people – a 500%
increase from their
blood drive the previous
year. Each year in
Angela’s honor, the
Blood Center awards
the high school with
the highest increase in
blood drive participation
with the Angela
Hohl Memorial Award.
Over 5,000 individuals support this year’s High School blood drive campaign
OVER 5,000 INDIVIDUALS – including principals, teachers,
student council presidents, musicians, athletes and
other students, rolled up their sleeves to give the gift
of life during the Blood Center’s 2004-2005 high
school campaign.
The success of our area high schools was celebrated
at recognition events held on May 5 at the Sheraton in
Wyomissing, and on May 25 at The Holiday Inn in
Bethlehem. Guest speaker at the Reading event was
Tricia Vaughan, blood bank supervisor, St. Joseph
Medical Center; and addressing attendants at the
Bethlehem event was Sen. Lisa Boscola.
71 high schools held blood drives this year. Of
those schools, 32 sponsored both fall and spring drives,
four hosted three (3) drives, and two held four (4) drives. Thanks to their efforts, over 4,000
units of blood were collected, providing the gift of life to over 10,000 patients at hospitals in
the eight PA and NJ counties served by the Blood Center.
more than 200 hours of service
with office support and fundraisers. In
addition, they both enjoy giving of their
hearing the news of the unfolding tragedy
in New York, she joined the many individuals
who came to the Center to see how
Miller-Keystone Blood Center Announces
Volunteer Leadership Council Chairperson,
Committee Members
Council Established To Increase Blood Donation Awareness Within Communities
Served By Blood Center
The Blood Center recently announced the establishment of its blood donor Volunteer
Leadership Council. According to the Center’s Kelly Jones, Assistant Director of Donor
Resources, goals of the Council include increasing awareness of the need for a safe,
stable blood supply; asking businesses and community organizations that currently do
not run blood drives to consider scheduling a drive; and encouraging existing donor
groups to increase their donor goals and/or hold blood drives on a more frequent basis.
Serving as Chairperson of the Leadership Council is Paul Huck, Vice President and
Chief Financial Officer, Air Products & Chemicals, Inc.
“A safe and adequate blood supply is absolutely critical for any community, but it
can’t happen without donations from the very people who may someday need to draw
on that supply,” said Mr. Huck. “Together with other members of the Leadership
Council, I am pleased to assist Miller-Keystone Blood Center in its efforts to increase
awareness and boost blood donations for our local communities.”
“Miller-Keystone Blood Center is the exclusive blood supplier to our regional hospitals,”
explains Ms. Jones, “and over 350 units of blood are needed each day to support the
transfusion needs of patients in these hospitals. It is our hope that the establishment
of this Council, under the leadership of Mr. Huck, will encourage businesses and other
community organizations to step up to the plate and show their support for our
community’s only not-for-profit blood resource.”
