Cruisin’ the ’50s
Aboard the LifeLine
6
Hello guys and gals, mommy-o’s and daddy-o’s and all the rest of you cool cats!
Are you ready to flip? We have a far-out bash planned for our tenth annual Cruise
this year. You’re gonna go ape! You’re gonna pop your top! We’re “Cruisin’ the ’50s”
and we’d like you to join us. It’s our annual signature fundraising event and we’d like
you to help us be made in the shade. So, don’t be a square, rev up your roadster and
come join the fun!
Miller-Keystone Blood Center is pleased to announce the continuation of our very
successful special event tradition, with our 10th annual “Cruise Aboard the LifeLine”
on Friday, May 14, 2004. Guests can look forward to another fun-filled evening, as
everyone goes Cruisin’ through the ‘50s, visiting many exciting locals along the way,
reliving one of the greatest eras in American history.
As always, this year’s Cruise will take place at the Blood Center’s headquarters in
Hanover Township, Bethlehem. An excellent group of local gourmet caterers will once
again provide tempting Cruise cuisine, and attendants will also have the opportunity to
enjoy wonderful entertainment courtesy of the band “Shake, Rattle and Soul,” as well
as fabulous prizes and our very popular casino deck.
The Cruise Aboard the LifeLine has enabled the Blood Center to raise more than
$400,000 in net proceeds since the event’s inception in 1995. These funds have provided
much needed revenue in support of equipment, and other programs and services
that aid us in our mission to provide a safe, adequate blood supply in our region.
While our crew is hard at work, we hope that you are making your preparations to
attend the 2004 Cruise Aboard the LifeLine!
Blood Center Announces
Allentown Expansion
Miller-Keystone Blood
Center recently relocated
and expanded its fixed
site in Allentown, currently
at 1251 S. Cedar Crest
Boulevard (across from
Lehigh Valley Hospital).
The move was prompted
by the ever-increasing
demand for blood donations,
and by an increase
in donor activity at the
Allentown location.
“The Blood Center
recently reached a sixyear
agreement to lease a larger space
in the same industrial park as our current
location,” explains Joseph Yelo, Vice
D E V E L O P M E N T
This expansion
also increases
the need for
DEDICATED
VOLUNTEERS
to assist in the
Donor Room
and Canteen area
at the Allentown
fixed site.
For more information
opportunities,
“This new location, which is
approximately 3300 square
feet, includes the addition of
at least 3 new chairs for our
allogeneic and automated
collections donors, as well as
six donor parking spaces,
including a handicap space.”
Miller-Keystone Blood Center recently named LINDA A. MERKEL as Director of
management and business administration, most recently serving as Executive Director
for Celtic Fest, Inc. She holds a degree in Early Childhood Education from Northampton
Community College, and a degree in Business Administration from
Bergen Community College.
"I look forward to working with everyone at the Blood Center
to create a strategy to bring a constant flow of financial support,
as well as blood donors and volunteers, to this worthwhile organization,”
she says. “It has always been my philosophy to bring
energy and enthusiasm to my position, so get ready!”
Miller-Keystone Blood Center Launches
Donor Testing Services Division
Miller-Keystone Blood Center recently
announced the establishment of a Donor
Testing Services Division.
“The establishment of our new Donor
Testing Services Division was made possible
after the opening of our in-house NAT (nucleic
acid testing) laboratory in July 2003, and
subsequent renovations to our laboratory
department, which were completed in January
2004,” says Robert Arana, Director of Laboratory
Services. “The Food & Drug Administration
(FDA), which licenses and regulates
blood centers across the nation, required the
implementation of NAT, the next generation of
testing for infectious disease, on all blood
donor samples. This testing enables the Blood
Center to detect infections of HIV, HCV, West
Nile Virus and other diseases at earlier stages.”
Arana explains that the Blood Center’s
Laboratory Services include:
• Testing performed six (6) days a week;
results within 24-hours of receipt
• A professional, experienced staff,
available through a customer helpline
24 hours per day, seven (7) days per week
• Test results available electronically,
or via fax transmission
• Testing nomenclature customized to
reflect an organization’s current
terminology, and
Many Thanks to ...
JERRY HARGROVE II
• Immunohematology reference
laboratory services, including
patient/donor antibody resolution,
rare blood inventory and platelet
antibody screening and cross-matches.
“The establishment of this laboratory
further improves the safety of our community
blood supply, while supporting our overall
efforts to keep costs to our regional hospitals
under control,” says Joseph Yelo,
Vice President, Administration, noting that
this new state-of-the-art technology,
combined with the Blood Center’s ideal
location in the transportation hub of the
Northeast, allows the Blood Center to provide
customers with high-quality, cost-effective
donor testing services.
“With the Blood Center’s ability to test
100,000 to 200,000 blood donor samples per
year for both our region and other blood
centers nationwide who do not possess this
new technology, the new Donor Testing
Services Division enhances the Blood
Center’s stature in the U.S. blood collection
industry as a full-service laboratory,” Yelo
concludes.
The Blood Center’s Donor Testing Services
Division operates out of the Blood Center’s
headquarters, located at 1465 Valley Center
Parkway, Bethlehem.
Donor for Life
New
Bloodmobile
Arrives
MKBC staff and local dignitaries listen as a representative
of the Berks County Chamber of Commerce
presents the Blood Center with a plaque in recognition
of their new bloodmobile.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for
Miller-Keystone Blood Center’s fourth
self-contained bloodmobile vehicle
was held on Thursday, January 15, at
the Blood Center’s fixed site in
Reading. The new bloodmobile vehicle
was purchased through the generosity
of individuals, corporations and foundations
throughout our area.
Joseph Yelo, Vice President,
Administration, explains that the new
bloodmobile will be based at the Blood
Center’s Berks County location, but
will be used throughout the region
served by the Blood Center.
“The bloodmobile vehicle currently
used in Berks County went into service
in 1993,” says Yelo. “Due to increased
blood transfusion requirements of
patients in regional hospitals over the
last few years, the addition of a new
vehicle was necessary to collect more
blood to meet these demands.”
Have You Visited Our
Web Site Lately?
The Blood Center continues to update and
expand OCTOBER our web site in order to make it a more
useful tool for our donors, volunteers and the
community.
Before scheduling an appointment to donate,
donors are able to review up-to-date information
on eligibility requirements; they are also able to
complete a survey after their donation, to help us
ensure that their experience was a pleasant one.
Donors can also review the listing of blood drives
for the month, to see if any bloodmobiles are
being held in their immediate area.
Those interested in volunteering with the
Blood Center can review volunteer opportunities
and job descriptions on our recently-revised
volunteer services link.
In addition, the site includes information on
job opportunities with the Blood Center, details
fundraising event and other fundraising initiatives,
and scholarship opportunities.
