Blood Center Kicks Off
2005-2006 Annual Appeal
We all have it. We all need it to live.
What is this vital element? It’s Blood.
We hope you never need it … but, if you do, Miller-Keystone Blood Center
will be there for you.
This is why it is so critical that the communities we serve have an effective and efficient
system for collecting and distributing blood to those who need it. The Blood Center is committed
to working closely with the 17 regional hospitals that we serve (see page 20). We believe
that together we are helping shape MIRACLES for the patients served by distributing more than
145,000 blood components every year!
This means that our community can count on us, your community blood center, to collect
and provide approximately 350 blood products each and every day.
Did you know?
• One out of every ten people entering a hospital needs blood;
• 60% of the US population is eligible to donate blood, however,
only 5% do so on a yearly basis;
• Many people are unable to donate blood for various medical reasons.
Have you ever thought about who will provide the blood if you ever need it? When you
consider the growth in population in our communities, the aging of the population, the increase
in surgical procedures, and the increased incidences of cancer and heart disease, you can see
why we are concerned.
These are just a few reasons why Miller-Keystone Blood Center will designate its 2005-06
Annual Appeal toward the purchase of a 2006 Blue Bird Forward Control Bloodmobile with cab
over engine design and easy maneuverability. Financial contributors, as well as blood donors,
are the backbone of this community blood program. Our goal is to raise $150,000 over the next
six-to-nine months.
Will you help give the gift of life? Because that’s exactly what your gift today will do. On
behalf of Miller-Keystone Blood Center and the patients who receive blood, as well as our blood
donors, we thank you for your consideration, and we look forward to a successful Annual Appeal.
For information concerning a donation toward the 2006 Bloodmobile, please call Linda
Merkel, Director of Development, at 610-691-5850, ext. 248, or visit the “Development
Opportunities” link at www.GIVEaPINT.org.
Miller-Keystone & Plainfield Volunteer
Fire Company Partner for
Weekly Bloodmobile Drives
Miller-Keystone Blood Center recently announced that effective November 8, 2005, weekly
bloodmobile drives that were previously held at the Slate Belt Nursing & Rehabilitation Center
(Bangor) will be held at the Plainfield Volunteer Fire Company (Wind Gap).
According to Joseph Yelo, Vice President of Administration, two factors influenced the
Blood Center’s move to a new location. “Miller-Keystone Blood Center is licensed and regulated
by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA),” explains Yelo. “During our most recent FDA
inspection, some concerns were raised by FDA officials regarding our operations at the Slate
Belt location. These concerns forced us to evaluate the viability of continuing our operations
there in the future.”
More recently, it was announced that Slate Belt Nursing & Rehabilitation Center will soon
be sold to a for-profit long-term-care provider. “As a not-for-profit organization ourselves,
Miller-Keystone feels rather strongly about maintaining ties with other not-for-profit organizations
in the region,” he notes.
Yelo confirms that MKBC recently entered into an agreement with the Plainfield Volunteer
Fire Company, 6480 Sullivan Trail, Wind Gap (at the exit of Route 33 and Route 512); this site
is located just five miles from the current Slate Belt operation. He notes that weekly blood
drives will continue in the region, explaining that “Beginning on Tuesday, November 8, blood
drives will take place at the Plainfield Volunteer Fire Company from 3:00pm to 7:30pm, every
other Tuesday, and every Thursday. Plainfield Volunteer Fire Company has gone out of their
way to welcome us into their facility, and we look forward to a long, beneficial partnership
with them.”
To schedule an appointment at the Plainfield Volunteer Fire Company location, or to learn
about volunteer opportunities in the region, call the Blood Center at 610-691-5850 or
Gallon Donor Picnic
A good time was had by all at this summer’s gallon donor
picnics, hosted in the Lehigh Valley and Berks County!
Alicia’s Story …
In 2003, Alicia Rodriguez of Bethlehem
was diagnosed with cancer. Through the
course of her treatment, she received
numerous blood and platelet transfusions.
Here, she shares her story …
In early 2003,
I was diagnosed
with acute myeloid
leukemia (AML).
This is a very aggressive
form of cancer
and it completely
took over my body
in a matter of days.
I was placed at St.
Christopher’s Children Hospital in Philadelphia
for four months straight.
During this time, I received a brutal assortment
of experimental chemotherapy, which
left my body completely drained. It soon
became necessary for me to receive blood
transfusions almost every day.
My blood counts were so low that I needed
just as many platelet transfusions as blood,
but they were harder to come by because so
few people donate [platelets] on account of
the time needed for this procedure.
It was a long uphill battle for me to overcome
this debilitating disease, but with help
from the good people who decided to take time
out of their busy lives to donate blood, I am
now a 19-year-old, healthy, full-time student.
The Blood Center wishes to acknowledge
the tremendous, ongoing support of our
local media, without which we would
not be able to continue in our efforts to
increase awareness of the need for an
active pool of blood donors. On behalf
of the staff of the Blood Center, our
area hospitals, and the patients that
ultimately benefit from these efforts,
we say “Thank you!”
Blood Center Jumps Into Fall
First 5K Run/Walk and
Community Day Held in October
At deadline, the Blood Center was finalizing plans for this year’s “Jump Into Fall” 5K Run/Walk
in the Park and Community Day Celebration, scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 9.
According to Linda Merkel, Director of Development, this fun-filled day was to take place at
the Blood Center’s headquarters in the Lehigh Valley Corporate Center, 1465 Valley Center
Parkway, Bethlehem.
“While the gift of blood is the one on which Miller-Keystone Blood Center has developed its
reputation, it is the financial support we receive that allows our facility to function optimally,”
Merkel explains, noting that each year the Center is faced with critical, ongoing needs, such as
the need to update laboratory equipment or replace blood collection and transportation vehicles.
And while this event will raise funds towards these initiatives, it also serves a greater purpose,
Merkel says.
“We hope that this day will raise awareness of the mission of Miller-Keystone Blood Center,”
she notes. “Many are unaware that every three seconds, someone needs blood, and that someone
could be a friend, a neighbor, a co-worker, or a loved one. Blood is a life-giving resource.
For those requiring blood transfusions for traumatic injuries, cancer treatments, burns, surgery
or a blood disease, the need is immediate, and there is no substitute. Our mission is to fulfill this
need to help save lives, and it is only through the assistance of our community that we can
achieve this.”
Major contributors to the Community Day event include Gold’s Gym, Harleysville National
Bank, Just Be Natural (JBN), Lehigh Fuels, Old Country Buffet and PNC Bank.
The October 9 events included:
• 5K Run/Walk through the Lehigh Valley Corporate Center. Registration begins at 8:30 am.
The Run will begin at 10:00 am, and the Walk will begin at 10:15 am. (Dogs are welcome)
All runners/walkers will receive a ribbon, and there are prizes for the runners.
• “Quacker Dash” rubber ducky race at the Valley Center Parkway pond will take place at 1:00
pm. Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place duckies, as well as the “slow poke”
(last place).
Community Day events included:
• “What's My (Blood) Type” Booth
• Kathy Pierce, Storyteller
• Spider Man
• Country-Rhythm Band
• Food, refreshments, family activities, games, educational displays and more!
“Our Community Day focuses on the remarkable journey that a unit of blood travels from the
time it is drawn from a volunteer donor until it is administered to a patient,” Merkel concludes.
“The success of that journey depends on the goodwill and ongoing support of our blood donors,
staff, volunteers, healthcare partners and financial contributors. The message we will share during
Community Day underscores our reputation as the area’s exclusive provider of blood and
transfusion service. With support and commitment, we will continue to build on that tradition,
and everyone can be involved in saving lives… one pint at a time!”
Valley Preferred
to Pump Life into
Blood Donor Program
This past summer, Valley Preferred,
an Allentown-based community partnership
of doctors and hospitals,
announced an innovative program to
help ensure adequate blood supplies
during the summer months. The program,
entitled “Get Your Blood Racing,”
was funded and organized by Valley
Preferred and enlisted the help of
Miller-Keystone Blood Center and the
Lehigh Valley Velodrome professional
bike racing facility.
A very special thank you to the Lehigh Valley
Velodrome and Valley Preferred, for their summer
partnership with Miller-Keystone Blood Center! June
24 marked the partnership of the Velodrome and
Valley Preferred to recognize and honor MKBC’s
exemplary blood donors. Pictured (left to right) are
MKBC’s Kelly Jones, blood donors Leroy Sutton,
Richard Miklas, Gary Hilbert and John Moriarity, and
Valley Preferred’s Laura Mertz. Also pictured are
Laura’s children, Kyle and Haley.
Under the unique program, Valley Preferred arranged for MKBC’s bloodmobile to appear
at five of the Velodrome’s professional bicycle racing events. Anyone registering to donate
at an event had their admission to the bike race paid for by Valley Preferred, and also
received a special custom T-shirt, as well as having their names entered into an exclusive
door prize drawing held later that evening.
“Year after year, local blood reserves have been seriously low during the warmer months
when there is more outdoor activity and a higher likelihood of accidents. It’s a health issue
that seems to be as cyclical as the changing seasons,” explained Laura Mertz, Director of
Sales and Marketing at Valley Preferred. “Our interest is community health awareness so
we’re making the effort to change this low-blood cycle with some cycles of our own.”
“It’s all about the team effort. By teaming with the Velodrome, our community blood
center and local volunteers, we’re pulling together a pro-active attempt to solve a serious
summer health concern for our community,” said Mertz.
Recognizing Someone Special
Best wishes to Blood Center volunteers George Ashman, Carl
Branson, Lorraine Corso, Joyce Cropper, Ginny Hein, Marilyn Rider,
Bill & Louise Sanderson and Neil Young who were recently recognized
by WAEB and Gebhardt Trophies for their outstanding volunteer efforts!
George is the recipient of Blood Center’s Community Leadership
Award for 2004. George has been a blood donor since the age of 21.
Now close to 80, he has also recorded more than 500 hours of service as
a blood drive coordinator and volunteer in the Palmerton region.
Carl joined the Blood Center in 1999, and has volunteered more than
500 hours as a canteen attendant at our Allentown fixed site. He says
he has found it to be a rewarding experience, and that he is always
learning something from our donors.
Since joining MKBC in 2003, Lorraine has volunteered more than
500 hours of service as a donor aide and canteen attendant. She enjoys
the interaction with the donors, particularly when they talk about
books, as Lorraine is an avid reader.
Joyce began volunteering with MKBC in 2002, and has volunteered
more than 500 hours as a donor aide on bloodmobiles and at the
Bethlehem fixed site. She is also a regular blood donor who has donated
over 71 pints of blood, She says she enjoys helping such a good cause
because she knows how important blood is for the people that need it.
Ginny has volunteered more than 500 hours of service since 2002,
serving as a canteen attendant. She joined the Blood Center when her
husband was in need of blood products. Unable to donate herself, she
wanted to help in some way. She volunteers at our Bethlehem and
Easton fixed sites, as well as occasional bloodmobiles.
Since 2002, Marilyn has volunteered more than 525 hours of service
as a canteen attendant. At that time, a family member was in need of
blood donations, and since she was not able to donate herself, she
decided that volunteering was how she could help. And recently, her
granddaughter, Amanda, has joined her in order to fulfill her community
service hours for the Bethlehem school district!
Bill and Louise have volunteered in the canteen since 2000, with
Bill volunteering more than 430 hours and Louise over 150. Louise
also worked at the Blood Center for five years in several capacities.
Both are now retired, and enjoy volunteering with numerous community
organizations.
Since 2002, Neil has volunteered more than 500 hours while holding a
full-time job and addressing family responsibilities. He works as a
canteen attendant on bloodmobiles and at our Bethlehem fixed site, and
enjoys meeting the many wonderful people who donate the gift of life.
On behalf of the residents of our local communities, who have ultimately
benefited from their dedication, the Blood Center thanks
George, Carl, Lorraine, Joyce, Ginny, Marilyn, Bill, Louise and Neil for
their volunteerism!
MKBC volunteer Edward Muschlitz recently received an Outstanding
Senior Award from the Northampton County Area on Aging Advisory
Council. These awards are presented to individuals who contribute their
time and talents for the benefits of others in our community through
outreach, personal action, inspiration, public service, sports/educational
efforts and civic humanitarian endeavors. Ed has volunteered more
than 500 hours of service to the Blood Center. He also volunteers for the
Senior Centers of Bethlehem, teaches boating classes for the US Power
Squadron at St. Stephen’s Church and both area community colleges; and
is active with Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Anna Evans was recently invited to be the guest speaker at the Cedar
Crest College Community Service Volunteer Recognition Ceremony,
where she presented an overview of her nursing career, her Air Force
career, and her volunteer career. To date, she has given more than 9,000
Council. Jenna earned her award - the highest presented to a Senior Girl
Scout – by planning two blood drives that were held at Robeson Lutheran
Church in Mohnton. Jenna also has the distinction of being the first student
volunteer at MKBC’s Reading site, and was a recipient of the 2005
HCS Blood Drive Recruitment Scholarship.
2004-2005
Report of Gifts
DEAR FRIENDS:
This past year, MKBC opened a new fixedsite
location in Hazleton, PA.
We are very pleased to report that over the
past year, many positive things have occurred
at Miller-Keystone Blood Center!
In November 2005, the Blood Center was
proud to be named as the exclusive blood
provider to the Greater Hazleton Health
Alliance. To assist us in this role, we established
a deeper presence within the community
as we opened our new Hazleton Donor A second mini-bloodmobile was purchased
Center. We also welcomed the addition of a to provide additional opportunities for
residents to donate the gift of life.
second mini-bloodmobile, to provide residents
throughout our service area with additional opportunities to donate the gift of life.
Last winter’s weather brought home the vital importance of bloodmobiles to our operations
at the Blood Center. Fortunately, we were able to transport staff and volunteers to
blood collection sites and replenish the supplies of blood at our area hospitals. We are also
fortunate to host blood drives at over 70 high schools and colleges.
Our Nat Laboratory has continued to allow the Blood Center to perform our own inhouse
testing for infectious diseases. As a result, blood products are released to hospital
and healthcare facilities much earlier to meet patient transfusion requirements. The onsite
NAT Laboratory also ensures the Blood Center’s ability to control costs. We are striving
to provide the best services to our community, blood donors, hospitals, and their patients.
It is a part of our mission that we take very seriously – many lives depend on it!
This edition of the “Community Connection” also announces the kick-off of the 2005-
2006 Annual Appeal (see page 1). It is important to remember that while the gift of blood
is the one on which we developed our reputation, it is the financial support we have
received that makes our facility continue to function optimally. In order for us to
adequately and efficiently serve our community, we rely on financial support and contributions
of tangible gifts in support of our programs and services.
We have a long rich history of working hard in our community along with many wonderful
volunteers and we will continue to position ourselves to remain strong and successful.
We also have a comprehensive website that provides a wealth of online information related
to various opportunities to get involved as a blood donor, a service volunteer or a financial
contributor through our many special events or planned giving opportunities.
We are deeply appreciative for the outstanding support of citizens, schools, volunteer
groups and our business industry. On behalf of Miller-Keystone Blood Center, we believe
in saving and enhancing lives … and with your continued support we can do it … one pint
at a time!
Sincerely,
