System reports are available that allow
cost per unit of service measurements.
It is important for the facility to develop
baseline data against which to measure
future performance and attainment
of expected results. ••
Medical System Alternatives
Point-of-use technology offers some of the more
dramatic and cost effective ways to reduce supply
costs as well as to improve the productive ability of
staff. The paradox is that the systems are inexpensive
but they're not cheap.
The systems are inexpensive in that they have one
of the shorter, measurable, hard-dollar paybacks of
any capital investment that can be made. The cost
savings aspect goes directly to the bottom line as
opposed to many capital improvements that require
years of discounted revenue improvement to return
their investment.
The systems are not cheap in that they do require a
substantially higher capital investment or lease obligation
than most materials management departments
have been considered for in the past. Depending on
the size and scope of installation, the cost can go into
6 or 7 figures.
The performance areas to measure are:
• Consumption reduction (shrinkage and waste)
• Productivity of both nursing and materials
departments through redundant and remedial
processes.
• Inventory control
• Cost accounting - Decision support, billing and
payer negotiations.
Each facility must determine which are "hard" and
"soft", and which may be significant depending on circumstances
- restricted access areas, reduction of
overtime, perpetually inventoried product which may
need wasting, bundling charges, etc.
Most of these can be measured and are objective.
Most often the "hard" improvements justify the system
and "soft" can be thought of as icing on the cake.
