With this <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, it is necessary to critically exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> phenomena<br />

discovered by Kuhn outside <strong>the</strong> framework with<strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>ally described.<br />

4. Towards an Alternative Explanation.<br />

4.1. V2 Violations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Codex Regius.<br />

While Kuhn (1933:61–62) lists <strong>the</strong> total number <strong>of</strong> V2 violations <strong>in</strong> different<br />

groups <strong>of</strong> poetry, he does not list <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>dividually for each poem.<br />

In order to get a clear picture, I have thus done my own analysis. My<br />

numbers are similar to those listed by Kuhn but tend to be slightly lower.<br />

I am not certa<strong>in</strong> about <strong>the</strong> reason for <strong>the</strong> discrepancies. Sometimes, <strong>the</strong><br />

syntactic analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poetry is not straightforward, and I may have<br />

rejected more ambiguous cases than Kuhn did. It is also possible that<br />

Kuhn simply had a keener eye for this and spotted some <strong>in</strong>stances that I<br />

missed. I read each poem carefully twice, but it is <strong>in</strong>evitable that I have<br />

made some mistakes. It may be some consolation that s<strong>in</strong>ce I list each<br />

<strong>in</strong>stance, any future analysis can build on and improve upon my work.<br />

Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poems <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fornyrislag corpus conta<strong>in</strong> formulaic<br />

repetitions <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual long l<strong>in</strong>es or half-stanzas. When estimat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

frequency <strong>of</strong> a l<strong>in</strong>guistic phenomenon <strong>in</strong> a poem, it seems methodologically<br />

preferable to exclude <strong>the</strong>se repetitions. In this, I am model<strong>in</strong>g<br />

my work after Fidjestøl’s (1999) analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> frequency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> um/<strong>of</strong><br />

expletive particle (see section 4.3). Where <strong>the</strong> text <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manuscript is<br />

ambiguous or seem<strong>in</strong>gly corrupt, I have used <strong>the</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> edition<br />

used <strong>in</strong> each case. Undertak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dependent textual criticism would have<br />

been time consum<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>the</strong> possibility <strong>of</strong> bias on my part.<br />

I have taken a fairly broad view <strong>of</strong> what constitutes fornyrislag, but<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are <strong>in</strong>evitably some borderl<strong>in</strong>e cases that require a judgment call. I<br />

have <strong>in</strong>cluded Hamismál and Hlskvia: Although those poems show<br />

an aff<strong>in</strong>ity with málaháttr <strong>the</strong>y can still be viewed as composed <strong>in</strong> a variant<br />

<strong>of</strong> fornyrislag. I have also <strong>in</strong>cluded Víkarsbálkr and Merlínússpá,<br />

despite <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong>y conta<strong>in</strong> some strophes <strong>in</strong> kviuháttr. 6 I have left<br />

out Atlamál, which is clearly <strong>in</strong> málaháttr throughout, and Hárbarsljó,<br />
