Curry Leaf Restaurant
The local cuisine in Sri Lanka is defined by its many influences. Due to its colonial
history and strategic location as a trade hub, Sri Lankan food has developed to
include a diverse mix of different palettes from both the European and Asian regions.
If you are looking to sample a complete range of Sri Lankan culinary art, then you
need to travel no further than Curry Leaf.
Suitably named due to the popular use of curry leaves in the local diet, Curry Leaf is
a buffet-only Sri Lankan restaurant at the Hilton Colombo specializing in local dishes
and seafood. The restaurant is located ideally in the gardens by the Lotus pond. It is
easy to tell that special care and attention to detail has gone into its decoration
which gives the restaurant a village-like atmosphere. From the bicycle selling
“kadala”, the huts serving hoppers and the lady baking “kokkis”, to the fishing boat
and devil mask decorations, you will find yourself easily settling down into the
serene, friendly, completely local ambience. The restaurant is open-aired (though
there is an air-conditioned area for those who want it) and we’re told a most popular
location in the hotel during rainy periods.
The food is diverse and plentiful, so much so that you will need to be careful that you
don’t stuff yourself before trying all that you want to! The buffet-style setup allows
you to walk around freely and leisurely and select between freshly made kothu rotti
and hoppers, rice, pittu and an assortment of curries. The waiters are plentiful,
attentive and friendly, taking any orders briskly without any fuss. Another plus point
is that the different chefs and cooks are out and visible to diners, and are very open
to conversations about cooking styles and recipes.
However, the highlight of the restaurant has to be the extensive fresh seafood
buffet. Featuring every kind of fish available in local waters as well as crabs, monster
prawns and cuttlefish it is truly a seafood lover’s paradise. The freshly caught
seafood is aesthetically arranged on ice, where you can pick the item of your choice,
instruct the waiting chefs on how you want it cooked, and watch it being made in
front of you. Outside of the crab and giant prawns (which are sold separately by
weight) all the other seafood items are included in the overall buffet price. Our only
warning is to make sure you leave room for dessert.
If you’re looking for a relaxing, cultured dining experience in Colombo, then Curry
Leaf is the place to go. The decorations and open location of the restaurant are a real
stand-out while the service is quick, friendly and efficient. The food is diverse, while
maintaining a high quality, and is a great place to introduce visitors to Sri Lanka to
the local cuisine. The restaurant gets full marks for ambience, atmosphere, selection
of food and value for money, all while being conveniently located in the heart of the
Colombo.
All in all, Curry Leaf at the Hilton Colombo has to be pinpointed as one of the mustvisit
restaurants in the city.
Our Curry Leaf favourites:
