Programme implementation: ‣ Most countries have programmes which include the lowering of patients’ anxiety over the circumcision & creation of a conducive environment for safe and comfortable VMMC. This is being accomplished by having helpful doctors and nurses and by making the process clear to participants. Facilities providing circumcision services conducted routine counseling services for circumcision. ‣ In most circumstances the minimum amount of time (15 - 30 minutes) is taken to perform the procedure (South African Department of Health, 2008). ‣ In terms of the methods used, most of the countries’ programmes used the more effective types of circumcision i.e. the Guided Forceps is the simplest, preferred and most effective method to use, however, if the patient was at risk for excessive bleeding than the Sleeve Resection method is being used (Plus News, 2009).
‣ The ages of the patients that were involved were mostly adults aged 18-49 years. An increased focus on neonatal and pre-pubescent VMMC may be required in addition to AVMMC. ‣ Most programmes attempted to use hygienic methods to promote safety, however, more resources may be required to ensure safer and more hygienic procedures occur. ‣ In terms of the process involved in VMMC, the MOVE (Model for Optimizing Volume & Efficiency ) Method was found to be effective and efficient and was used by most countries. –Task shifting and Task Sharing models (WHO,2010) ‣ Infrastructure and staffing affects the level of comfort felt by the patients. Most men preferred to be circumcised in a hospital setting (Kebaabetswe et al., 2003). Many countries lacked adequate infrastructure and staffing. Health facilities reported that they would be able to increase the number of VMMCs performed if they had additional resources (AVAC, 2012).
