Creative cooperation between vendors and operators<br />
is indispensible to telco industry progress. Jaime<br />
Bustillo, CTO of Vodafone Spain, discusses current<br />
industry trends and how his firm’s cooperation with<br />
<strong>Huawei</strong> is innovating the field.<br />

Innovation through cooperation<br />
Jaime Bustillo, CTO of Vodafone Spain<br />
WinWin: Vodafone and <strong>Huawei</strong> have been<br />
cooperating intensively for a long time. How do you<br />
view the progress of the cooperation so far and how is<br />
Vodafone Spain benefiting from it?<br />
Bustillo: The collaboration with <strong>Huawei</strong> started a long<br />
time ago. Vodafone Spain has the honor of hosting two<br />
Vodafone Group Joint Innovation Centers with <strong>Huawei</strong><br />
– the Mobile Innovation Center (MIC), focused on radio<br />
technologies and created in 2005; and the Application<br />
Innovation Center (AIC), which was created in 2007 and<br />
is focused on applications and software.<br />
More than 25 projects developed in the two Innovation<br />
Centers have become commercial. In the MIC, we started<br />
applying the remote radio heads and SingleRAN products<br />
that we are currently deploying for all networks, and later<br />
we improved various radio product features.<br />
We have found a very good match in <strong>Huawei</strong>. <strong>Huawei</strong><br />
is very interested in the customer and in innovation. We<br />
can work with them to innovate for our customers in a<br />
very cooperative way, and that’s what we are bringing to<br />
the customer – the best in terms of networking; we are<br />
starting to cooperate in terms of applications and we will<br />
continue cooperating in all other aspects of our activities.<br />
We need to continue working together; we need to<br />
improve the way we cooperate in innovation, and for the<br />
