Tao of Business The challenges with LTE now for us in Spain and in many countries are frequencies. All the countries are allocating frequencies in 2.6GHz band and 800MHz band. Terminals and frequencies are the two key things we need to deploy LTE. we need to continue doing exactly the same as what we are doing today – providing customers what they are requiring. With time this will change, and we will need to change our approach as well. I think the key thing is to provide Internet connection to customers so they can use and access whatever they want wherever they go. If they want to access the content they have stored in the cloud, they can. If they want to watch TV films sometimes when they are out from their home or if they travel to other countries and want to watch the sporting events in their home country/town, they can. This is going to be the key direction for the coming years. We need new tools for uploading… for content delivery to improve. But these are only going to be tools. The main challenge is to have ubiquitous Internet for everyone at every moment. WinWin: Speaking about the tools needed to help make the Internet ubiquitous, can you update us on the progress that Vodafone has made in fields like RCS or CDN? Bustillo: As I said, we are working to provide the best Internet experience to our customers and these technologies, like CDN, are for sure within our radar for future deployment. We have been a quite innovative company so far and we are going to continue being one for sure. Regarding RCS, the industry standard was announced at the last Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and I would like to mention that Vodafone Group has been very active in the development of this technology, and Spanish experts have been also especially active in its development. WinWin: What are the top challenges facing operators looking to deploy LTE commercially in the future? Bustillo: The challenges with LTE now for us in Spain and in many countries are frequencies. All the countries are allocating frequencies in the 2.6GHz and 800MHz bands. Obtaining the frequencies is the key issue for LTE now. Whereas we are obtaining the frequencies, we need to have the participation of the ecosystem as both vendors and operators are prepared to deploy LTE. Terminals and frequencies are the two key things we need to deploy LTE. WinWin: What are your expectations from <strong>Huawei</strong> in the LTE space? When do you think is the right time to deploy an LTE network? Bustillo: The expectation is flexibility. As I said before, we still don’t know exactly the moment we need to use the frequency bands and capacity. So we need the flexibility to give us response and support. Of course, we believe <strong>Huawei</strong> has the best technology that we can find in the market. We will start deploying LTE after we get the frequencies. We are starting to do trials. The evolution will depend on the market for smartphones that is going to be the drive for LTE capacity; deployment will also depend on the Spanish economic situation. But, we will certainly start at the end of 2011. WinWin: Cloud computing is a very popular topic in the industry. How would you describe the role that it could play in telecommunications? Bustillo: With regards to cloud, everyone, every company, every telecom operator and big Internet players want to play. There are many definitions of cloud. We need to address many of them. One definition of cloud is private cloud. We need to provide services. We still need to transform the back office into a cloud in a way that we can get better benefits. This impressive product takes all corporate communication services to the cloud. voicemail and application stores where you may have folders of content in the cloud. You don’t need to carry a memory stick with your content. Your content is always available. Another definition of cloud that they like to use is a cloud of everything that is not broadcasted over the Internet. That is the definition of cloud that would be more relevant to the coming years. Everything is going to be interactive. Everything is going to be in the cloud. WinWin: What is Vodafone’s plan when it comes to cloud computing, and can you describe its progress to date? Bustillo: Vodafone Spain has been a pioneer operator in developing the cloud concept. We launched “Vodafone Office” more than five years ago. This impressive product takes all corporate communication services to the cloud, reducing the customer’s infrastructure to the minimum. Now, new cloud services are arising, relating to taking other IT infrastructure to the cloud, like cloud storage; Vodafone Spain is working to develop this part of our business.
