General Business Description 2.1 Twisted and Toasted Twisted and toasted is a pretzel stand that sells soft pretzels cooked over a charcoal grill. The stand is a simple set up consisting of a sign, a small canopy, and a charcoal grill off to the side. The canopy houses a table with condiments and napkins, a chair, a cooler containing the uncooked pretzels, and sometimes beverages. This simple setup has the advantage of being inexpensive and able to fit into a car. The pretzels themselves will be made by the owner in a rented commercial kitchen. Although it would be cheaper and easier to buy frozen pretzels from Costco or a food distributor, Twisted and Toasted is focused on providing a homemade and superior product. Space will be rented at local events and festivals where the pretzels will be sold. 2.2 Ownership Twisted and Toasted pretzels will be a sole proprietorship owned by John Doe. John is a junior in high school who has always been interested in being an entrepreneur. He has been active in sports as well as other extracurricular activities throughout his high school career. A hard worker, he has maintained a good GPA and thinks often about the future. Ironically named John Doe, he really is a stand out individual. 2.3 Products and Services Twisted and Toasted Pretzels will offer three varieties of pretzel in regular, jalapeño, and parmesan cheese. The customer will get a fresh pretzel on a piece of wax paper with a napkin and an optional mustard packet. At certain events the stand will also vend sodas and waters stored in a cooler and kept on ice. The owner has also come up with an innovative recipe
“Smoked Oyster Pretzels” which will be sold at the annual oyster festival. This delicious twist on the classic pretzel has never been done before. Marketing and Sales 3.1 Market Analysis/Competition The pretzels will be sold at various festivals and special events happening in the Arcata area. For the festivals, the customer base is largely captive and food will be purchased from whichever vendors are present. Many food vendors will be serving fancier snacks and meals than what Twisted and Toasted will be able to provide, however, pretzels have the edge in being relatively cheap and satisfying. Twisted and toasted also intends to vend during the summer Picnics on the Plaza and the Concerts on the Plaza events held by Arcata Main Street. No other food vendors are particularly expected to be present at these smaller events, however, if there was the presence of another vendor it may actually be beneficial in the same way stores in a mall benefit from being around other stores. As for the psychographic make-up of the market, a large number of people attending these events are expected to be families and young adults, exactly the kind of people who would buy a soft pretzel. The population of Arcata, in general, has a high number of vegetarians and vegans as well as health conscious individuals. Pretzels then are a good food to vend because they are not fattening, and can be made locally with no animal products. 3.2 Marketing/Pricing Having a relatively healthy product with no animal products would be meaningless if potential customers didn’t know about it.
