NATURAL HERITAGE GENERAL GOAL: To Foster Community Learning and Action Objectives Action / Activity Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and Targets: KPI 1: Positive change in community awareness of natural heritage. Target 1: 40% increase in community awareness by 2015. Target 2: 150% increase in participation in the Greening Program. KPI 2: Positive change in community capacity to manage natural heritage. Target: 40% increase in community capacity to manage natural heritage by 2015. NH1 - Increase community knowledge and appreciation of natural heritage assets by: NH1.2 Developing an Interpretation Strategy for natural heritage assets on Council-managed land. Note: Actions arising from the interpretation strategy, including signage, will require additional future capital investment. NH1.2 Upgrading the Evans Street Grassland community meeting room to a natural heritage education centre and meeting space with educational and interpretive materials and displays. Promote the facility to local schools and community groups. NH1.3 Encouraging participation by Hume residents, local schools, community groups, rural landowners, CaLD communities and businesses in natural heritage activities, including: • Environmental restoration projects through the Greening Program. • Live Green Workshops • Wildlife surveying and monitoring. NH1.4 Developing a Natural Heritage Tourism Guide for the community. NH2 - Build the capacity of rural landowners, Landcare groups and Friends groups to protect and enhance natural heritage assets by: NH2.1 Developing a Conservation and Land Management Guide. NH3 - Foster community leadership in natural heritage stewardship by: NH3.1 Encouraging involvement of members of local Landcare and Friends groups and natural heritage / conservation students in the Champions Program. NH3.2 Supporting one local school per year to undertake the Biodiversity Module of the Resource Smart Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative Victoria (RSS AuSSI Vic). 4 HUME CITY COUNCIL NATURAL HERITAGE STRATEGY ACTION PLAN 2011 - 2015

LEAD: Sustainable Environment SUPPORT: Economic Development, Organisational Planning and Improvement, Marketing & Communications Jun 2013 $5,000 • Conservation and Land Management Guide developed (output). • Landowner knowledge and skills in natural heritage management improved (outcome). Sustainable Environment Dec 2012 $3,000 (grant funded) • More natural heritage leadership within the Hume community (outcome). Sustainable Environment Annually $29,725 over four years (Live Green Strategy) • Schools taking action to improve local biodiversity (outcome).
