rate for anencephalus (category 740) is<br />

shown for Monterrey, although it is based<br />

only on small numbers; this rate did not<br />

increase for fifth and later births.<br />

For El Salvador, the numbers <strong>of</strong> deaths<br />

from anenceplaIlus and other anomalies <strong>of</strong><br />

the nervous system by birth order are given<br />

in Table 109 (even though the base for rates,<br />

TAHLEX109.<br />

Seventeen <strong>of</strong> the 58 deaths were <strong>of</strong> firstborn<br />

infants and 16 others were <strong>of</strong> fifth or<br />

higher birth orders. Both El Salvador and<br />

the cause <strong>of</strong> these anomalies is not known,<br />

the data are sufficient to show that inany<br />

orders. In Monterrey, 15 <strong>of</strong> the deaths (16.5<br />

per cent) were <strong>of</strong> infants <strong>of</strong> the ninth or<br />
