308 <strong>Patterns</strong> <strong>of</strong> Mortality in Childhood<br />

sufficient number <strong>of</strong> visits should be planned<br />

to ensure that the expectant mother receives<br />

proper surveillance <strong>of</strong> her state <strong>of</strong> health<br />

and nutrition as well as education on safeguarding<br />

the health <strong>of</strong> her child after birth.<br />

Such prenatal measures will help to assure<br />

that the birth, attended by qualified personnel,<br />

will take place under conditions <strong>of</strong>fering<br />

the best possible security to both mother<br />

and infant. Follow-up services after birth,<br />

with continuing emphasis placed on prevention<br />

<strong>of</strong> infectious diseases and malnutrition,<br />

prompt treatment <strong>of</strong> illness, and attainment<br />

<strong>of</strong> a desirable reproductive pattern in the<br />

mother, should constitute the minimum services<br />

to safeguard the health <strong>of</strong> mother<br />

and child.
