Experimental investigations <strong>and</strong> monitoring<br />
A diagnostic survey was performed on the masonry<br />
structures of the Cathedral to increase the knowledge<br />
of morphology <strong>and</strong> consistency of:<br />
- the masonry of the crypt’s two main pillars<br />
- a lateral pillar: 3 horizontal core samples (Cn)<br />
- the masonry of the crypt’s underlying room: 2<br />
horizontal <strong>and</strong> 1 vertical core sample on the<br />
foundation structure (CFn)<br />
The holes, once extracted the sample, has been<br />
inspected with a video endoscope.<br />
The core samples encountered brick masonry<br />
presenting in general poor mechanical characteristics.<br />
In particular, inside the masonry of the pillars, some<br />
pieces of disarranged bricks <strong>and</strong> several cavities due<br />
to the scarce cohesion of the mortar, which has been<br />
often washed away by the water used for the<br />
perforation, were found.<br />
