Practice Interview Questions & Tips
1. Tell me about yourself?
Practice putting together a short 2 minute pitch about yourself that helps you sell yourself
to the employer. Eg. I am currently studying at ICMS, sports management, and I have 2
years’ experience in coaching soccer teams.
Talk about a few of your skills and attributes that are appropriate to your industry.
2. What motivates you in your work or study?
Think about what motivates you, not what you think they want to hear. E.g. I am highly
motivated by learning new things and gaining new skills as a result.
3. What do you think your strengths are?
Talk about your main skills relevant to the role and industry. E.g. strong organisational
skills for events or strong customer service skills for hospitality etc.
4. Why should we hire you?
Relate your answer back to the job description. E.g. I noticed that you are looking for a
strong team player who is passionate about customer service. I believe that describes me
because……………………………. (and give real examples why)
5. Tell me what you know about our company
Number one rule of interviewing, make sure you research the company thoroughly before
the interview. Company websites are full of information but a good way to gather
meaningful information is to go to the careers tab on their website and see how they
describe themselves as a company and what they say about working there. Also include a
couple of relevant facts. Eg, the company was established in 1930 and is renowned for
providing great products and great customer service. Your company values include……..
etc.
6. What are your weaknesses?
It’s ok to talk about your weaknesses at interview but try to explain them in a positive
light. E.g. I like to have all the details before taking on something new, but I am getting
better at that and learning to use my own initiative and try things without having to know
everything.
Key tips for interviews

Ensure that you know the correct address where the interview will be held and that you
know the interviewer’s name
Arrive early but not too early, eg. 5-10 minutes early is fine
When you first meet the interviewer ensure you give a firm handshake and make eye contact
Ensure you maintain eye contact throughout the interview (but don’t stare)
Check your body posture, sit upright in your chair but in a relaxed posture. Don’t cross your
arms or slouch
Try to give your answers confidently and in a positive voice. If you are nervous, acknowledge
that with the interviewer and then try to forget about your nerves. If you are really nervous,
don’t forget to breathe, shallow breathing will set up an automatic response in the body
which will result in you feeling more nervous. Remember to breathe down into your
abdomen.
Don’t smoke before interview, it can be very off-putting to the interviewer if they are a nonsmoker
Don’t take a coffee in with you to interview, it’s not a good look
Dress professionally to promote the right image
