ICMS SPORTS AMBASSADOR
Introducing Kerri Pottharst……….
Kerri Pottharst is one of Australia’s most well-known and well-loved athletes – a triple Olympian with
two Olympic medals, Kerri spent 22 years competing in a sport she loves.
She is one of Australia’s most decorated indoor and beach volleyball players and is the only Australian
woman to have competed in the prestigious A1 Italian Indoor Volleyball League.
After overcoming countless challenges and potentially devastating injuries that threatened to end her
sporting career, Kerri’s drive to succeed saw her take to the court to win Bronze at the Atlanta
Olympics. But it was her unparalleled strength, focus and determination that allowed her to transform
her Bronze into Gold on Bondi Beach at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, in an overwhelming demonstration
of the power of courage, persistence and personal belief.
Since retiring from national and international competition in 2005, Kerri now divides her time between
her three passions – her family, coaching elite-level volleyball, and inspiring people from all walks of life
to achieve excellence through her keynote presentations and motivational workshops.
Working now with a range of businesses, imparting knowledge to executives, managers and staff about
the disciplines she learned from elite sport, and how they can be applied to business..
Finding Your Passion
Kerri Pottharst, ICMS Ambassador
I was always into sport. I tried Athletics, High Jump (I’m 6’ tall) – but stopped that when I fell on my head
one day and nearly broke my neck! I tried Netball at school, but that never went anywhere. I tried
Basketball, but I didn’t like running much. I liked Tennis, but there weren’t any opportunities to go far with
that. I tried Swimming, but found it really difficult as I tended to sink too quickly. One night my older
brother asked me to fill in at a social Indoor Volleyball competition: “We need 6 players on the court when
the whistle blows. Once that happens, you can step to the side and we’ll play”. But rather than stepping to
the side, I stayed on and played. I was 15 years old and this is how my passion for Volleyball began.
Have you found your Passion yet? What do you really love doing? If you’re not sure, keep trying all sorts of
things...
Cheerleading Champion
Grace O’Malley
My journey with competitive cheerleading started
in 2008, I was 14 and originally intended to join
gymnastics but the coach looked me up and down,
told me I was too old and my body had matured
too much to start gymnastics at a competitive level.
So he sent me to the back room to try out for
cheerleading like it was some lesser sport that my
"old" body would be more suited for. I didn't have
a clue about the sport, like most Australians but it
is actually our fastest growing sport and from day
one it is the hardest sport I have ever done. You
have to tumble like a gymnast, hold girls
above your head like a weight lifter, toss girls 8
metres in the air then catch them and your
flexibility has to be at a contortionist's level… All
with a smile on your face and a bow in your hair.
Cheerleading has allowed me to compete at a
National and International level, taking me to
Hawaii in 2010 for my first taste of the American
competition. During the 2012 season I competed in
the All-Girl Senior Level 5 division, the highest in
Australia and my success at Nationals meant I
earned a bid to the World Championships held at
Disneyworld in Florida this April. There are 97
countries competing at Worlds in 2013 and I have
the privilege to represent Australia. The
preparation for Worlds involves countless hours of
training, building up strength, flexibility and
tumbling skills to an elite level to help perfect a
2min 30sec routine. There are two days of
competition and the scores from both days are
averaged to determine the winner. Regardless of
the outcome, the experience has been incredible
and it is an honour to represent my country.
Student Name: Marko Victor Bilic
Where from: Newtown, Sydney, Australia
Discipline:
Placement: Soccer coach
Marrickville Football Club
High School: Christian Brothers, Lewisham
What did you learn while on Industry Training?
I learnt how to become a successful coach,
instructor and manager using different teaching
steps and aids that helped me and the students
learn new things on the way. Also, how to teach
students that learn in different outcomes.
What surprised you the most about your
placement?
I was surprised about the energy and the focus that
students had. I thought they might find it boring
but it was the complete opposite and they asked to
learn more.
What advice would you give other student going
out on Industry Training?
1. Plan your session depending on what you
are doing.
2. Ask questions to find out more on what to
do and go get more information.
3. Have fun
If you have any queries in regards to your
industry training options, email Sharon Stone
sstone@icms.edu.au
What were the challenges that you faced?
I learned to deal with different students that learn
at different speeds and in different ways.
The sporties were able to mingle with students from different terms, chat about upcoming events and
establish some new networks- Class Reps; Rachel Shrimpton and Joel Saaghy had the opportunity to make
some announcements and give their support to the sports school- not to go without a friendly but
competitive game of futsal. With both new and older students attending it made for a great event which
would be valuable to hold in future terms also.
ICMS Sports Panel of Experts Review
By Joel Saaghy
Bachelor of Sports Management @ ICMS
What a night!
On March 6 th 2013, the students of ICMS were treated to a sports industry panel of experts. We were
invited to sit in front of the panel of guest speakers, as each panellist was introduced by our host, Grant
Mayer, General Manager of Commercial Operations at Wests Tigers and Sports Management lecturer at
ICMS.
Our panel consisted of Peter Peters, former rugby league player and media legend; Aaron Markie Digital
Lead at Vodafone Australia; Joe Marrone, Manager of Corporate Sales at Manly Sea Eagles; Gavin
Robertson, former Test Cricketer, Host on Radio 2SM Talkin’ Sport, Community Manager of GWS Giants;
Alan Webster, Manager of Event Development at ANZ Stadium; Yvette Downey, Manager of Community,
Welfare and Development for Wests Tigers; and Scott Seward, General Manager of Membership and
Consumer Business and Parramatta Eels.
Grant opened the panel with quite an interesting animated video, colourfully talking about the reality of the
sports business industry, giving a comical yet serious undertone that the sports business industry is not all
glitz and glamour, and you have to be determined to make it. The raw and open comments expressed in
the video immediately had the audience hooked.
Soon after, as each panellist was introduced, we were indulged in their individual and personal stories
about the start in the sports management industry and their roles. Collectively, they have decades of
experience in the sports industry, a wealth of knowledge they happily shared. They each exuded a great
interest and understanding of their fields, captivating the audience with their challenges and achievements.
The diversity of experience made each panellist interesting in their own way. One common item, however,
made clear was they enjoyed their roles and felt very blessed to be working in such a demanding industry.
8
Another recurring theme was their relationships, stating that the people who we are sitting next to are the
same people we will come across in the future. Grant reiterated the advice to get to know the person
sitting next to you now because we may be working together down the line and that the relationships built
early during our education strengthen our careers.
At the conclusion of the discussion, all the students were invited to meet and mingle with each other and
the sports panellists over drinks and canapés. This presented not only a great opportunity for networking
with industry experts, but with each other as well. Advice well heeded during the presentation by eager
students.
Their insights were invaluable, and the experience gratifying. I walked out of the panel at the end of the
night, like many of us would have, having enjoyed the evening of discussions and advice given by the panel,
looking forward to the opportunities and experiences ahead. I cannot wait until the next Panel of Experts.

Organised the ‘Beach to Bush Program’, which
is where surf life savers visit rural schools all
over New South Wales, educating them on
surf safety and the beach environment. I
contacted the schools and organised
time/date suitable and informed schools on
presentation. Then organised timetable with
presenters (life saver volunteers).
Helped with the entries with NSW Surf Life
contacting all surf clubs, and entering
competitors in divisions, events and age
groups.
Did you know about Scott Clinton?
I took up Taekwondo when I was seven years old. I had tried playing tennis and wanted a change. After
seeing an advertisement for taekwondo classes at a local church, my older brother thought it would be fun
for both of us to try it out. My brother and I continued training until we each finished high school and we
both took a break. At the end of last year we both took up training again and are practicing for our next
gradings.
Our coach was an inspirational man. He trained the Green Berets and the Australian Special Forces during
the Vietnamese War and has gone on to promote Taekwondo within the Asia Pacific Region.
My experiences during the period I did taekwondo varied from meeting people with different nationalities
and beliefs, to training with people who have been members of the South Korean demonstration team.
My first tournament as a Black Belt was a terrifying thing. Since there were no other Black Belts in my
weight group, I had to be teamed with a person who was older and stronger. I was soundly beaten, but was
amazed when my opponent and his coach came over and congratulated me on putting up such a good
fight. I realised then, what being a good sport was all about. My greatest achievement was winning the
South Pacific Championship for the under 13 age group.
While taekwondo can appear boring, because of the repetition involved in learning the patterns associated
with each belt, it teaches patience, commitment and concentration. It is a valuable tool for all ages and
something that can be resumed even after a period of a few years.
What is your sporting background?
My family loved watching sporting games on
T.V, this was our special bonding time. My
earliest memories of sport are of my dad
cheering on his favourite teams. The Sports I
participated in where predominantly Rugby
Union, Cricket, Swimming Athletics and
Soccer. I went to a very competitive sporting
school where most athletes would excel in
one sport, mine was rugby. In High School I
played 1 st Team XV Rugby, 2 nd Team
Swimming, 2 nd Team Athletics, 3 rd Team
Cricket and Tennis. I played under 19s 3 rd
Team Rugby for the Lions (Johannesburg
based Provincial Rugby Union team). Now I
just play social touch footy for fun.
What is your favourite sport?
Rugby Union is by far the most, but I also
enjoy cricket, swimming, athletics and soccer
too.
Who is your favourite sports person?
What made you choose Sports Management?
I grew up enjoying and participating in Sport.
Growing up in South Africa I’ve seen how
sports can help in alleviating socio-cultural
issues such as crime and racism; especially
after witnessing South Africa win the Rugby
World Cup in 1995, a moment that united a
Country that had suffered a lot of bloodshed. I
guess I chose sport because I wanted to be
involved in using it to bring about a positive
impact to the community and be a light in the
sports industry.
My favourite would be Francoise Pienaar, the
Captain of the 1995 World Champion
Springboks. He is a legend in South African
rugby and his strong character, humility and
faith encouraged me. I also like Jonah Lomu
from the 1995 rugby era. Looking at today’s
sporting heroes, I don’t really have a
favourite, but I do like Dale Steyn, Jacques
Kallis, Usain Bolt and Manny Pacquiao.
Thanks Amos
Do you manage your time
effectively?
Finding the balance between
study and work can be
challenging
Below are some tips on how to manage your time efficiently…..
By Dave Hurlow, Head Teaching and Learning Centre
Set out a routine and stick to it (as much as you can). We are all creatures of habit, even if we don’t
realize it. We do things in the same way, every day. If you are studying a course as well as working on
I.T, our advice would be to draw up a weekly timetable of everything that you do. If there are gaps of 1
or 2 hours, try and dedicate this time to studying for the course. If you have a guide of how many selfstudy
hours the course requires, this will be beneficial to your planning. If you get into the routine of
doing some study at the same time every day it quickly becomes the norm and not a chore.
Bit by bit – don’t attempt to complete an assignment in one sitting. We can’t eat a chocolate cake in
one mouthful; instead we cut it into pieces. Do this with your assignment. If you plan it well you can do
one section per night (this may mean writing 300 words or so each night until you get the majority of it
done in 5 nights or so. This will make it so much more manageable, especially if you are working full
time as well during the day
Prioritise – look at the assignment(s) – is there one element you can get done quickly. Will you do that
first or last? Some people benefit from the a,b,c method. Label your tasks for the day/week using a,b,c,
etc. – with ‘a’ being the most difficult (or the opposite if you like, it’s up to you, it’s your show!).
However you decide to work, work down the list but don’t move onto the next letter until you’ve
finished the one before. This method isn’t for everyone as some people like to juggle tasks. If you are
worried and overwhelmed by everything that you’ve got to do, the a,b,c method may work for you.
If you are working full time then I would only recommend studying 1 course at the same time, or 2
maximum. Be realistic in your workload and goals. We’d all love to have the degree, 2 masters, work full
time, go out and have fun and still sleep a few hours each night, but not all of us can realistically do this.
Many of our students work and study before they go out on I.T, so this may not be a new issue for you.
If you have typically worked whilst studying 4 courses then being out on I.T and studying 1 course
should not be an issue. It’s all about planning and setting routines, taking things bit by bit, prioritizing
and being realistic in your goals.
Kristen’s Juicy News…..
Finally, as summer draws near so too does lots of seasonal tropical fruit, giving way to endless options for
freshly squeezed juice. Nutritionist and health scientist Kristen Beck shares her top tips for choosing a juice to
boost your health.
Brain saver
Sluggish after summer celebrations and finding it tricky to get your brain ticking over? Try an orange juice,
which contains the highest amount of potassium among the five most popular Australian juices. Potassium is
an important vitamin for a strong nervous system and maintaining good brain function.
Strong bones
Grapefruit and grape juices have a high amount of calcium which is necessary for strong bones and teeth, and
plays an important role in blood clotting, muscle contraction and normal nervous system function. It’s a
perfect traditional breakfast option with your morning cereal.
Glowing skin
Too much partying in the silly season can cause breakouts and tired looking skin. Orange juice has a very high
amount of Beta-carotene, compared to other popular juices, which converts into a form of vitamin A, known
to help with healthy skin and fight infections. A summer fruit punch by the pool with plenty of rockmelon and
apricots, which are also high in vitamin A, is the perfect summer skin treat.
Immune booster
Both pineapple and orange juice are great pick-me-ups, high in folate, which is a complex vitamin also found
naturally in a lot of leafy vegetables. Folate is important for cell division and growth and has been associated
with good health and reducing certain cancers. For an immune system boost, combine a summer pineapple
juice with a fresh chicken and avocado salad. Avocado is also high in folate.
