ICMS Sports Panel of Experts Review
By Joel Saaghy
Bachelor of Sports Management @ ICMS
What a night!
On March 6 th 2013, the students of ICMS were treated to a sports industry panel of experts. We were
invited to sit in front of the panel of guest speakers, as each panellist was introduced by our host, Grant
Mayer, General Manager of Commercial Operations at Wests Tigers and Sports Management lecturer at
ICMS.
Our panel consisted of Peter Peters, former rugby league player and media legend; Aaron Markie Digital
Lead at Vodafone Australia; Joe Marrone, Manager of Corporate Sales at Manly Sea Eagles; Gavin
Robertson, former Test Cricketer, Host on Radio 2SM Talkin’ Sport, Community Manager of GWS Giants;
Alan Webster, Manager of Event Development at ANZ Stadium; Yvette Downey, Manager of Community,
Welfare and Development for Wests Tigers; and Scott Seward, General Manager of Membership and
Consumer Business and Parramatta Eels.
Grant opened the panel with quite an interesting animated video, colourfully talking about the reality of the
sports business industry, giving a comical yet serious undertone that the sports business industry is not all
glitz and glamour, and you have to be determined to make it. The raw and open comments expressed in
the video immediately had the audience hooked.
Soon after, as each panellist was introduced, we were indulged in their individual and personal stories
about the start in the sports management industry and their roles. Collectively, they have decades of
experience in the sports industry, a wealth of knowledge they happily shared. They each exuded a great
interest and understanding of their fields, captivating the audience with their challenges and achievements.
The diversity of experience made each panellist interesting in their own way. One common item, however,
made clear was they enjoyed their roles and felt very blessed to be working in such a demanding industry.
