Do you manage your time effectively? Finding the balance between study and work can be challenging Below are some tips on how to manage your time efficiently….. By Dave Hurlow, Head Teaching and Learning Centre Set out a routine and stick to it (as much as you can). We are all creatures of habit, even if we don’t realize it. We do things in the same way, every day. If you are studying a course as well as working on I.T, our advice would be to draw up a weekly timetable of everything that you do. If there are gaps of 1 or 2 hours, try and dedicate this time to studying for the course. If you have a guide of how many selfstudy hours the course requires, this will be beneficial to your planning. If you get into the routine of doing some study at the same time every day it quickly becomes the norm and not a chore. Bit by bit – don’t attempt to complete an assignment in one sitting. We can’t eat a chocolate cake in one mouthful; instead we cut it into pieces. Do this with your assignment. If you plan it well you can do one section per night (this may mean writing 300 words or so each night until you get the majority of it done in 5 nights or so. This will make it so much more manageable, especially if you are working full time as well during the day Prioritise – look at the assignment(s) – is there one element you can get done quickly. Will you do that first or last? Some people benefit from the a,b,c method. Label your tasks for the day/week using a,b,c, etc. – with ‘a’ being the most difficult (or the opposite if you like, it’s up to you, it’s your show!). However you decide to work, work down the list but don’t move onto the next letter until you’ve finished the one before. This method isn’t for everyone as some people like to juggle tasks. If you are worried and overwhelmed by everything that you’ve got to do, the a,b,c method may work for you. If you are working full time then I would only recommend studying 1 course at the same time, or 2 maximum. Be realistic in your workload and goals. We’d all love to have the degree, 2 masters, work full time, go out and have fun and still sleep a few hours each night, but not all of us can realistically do this. Many of our students work and study before they go out on I.T, so this may not be a new issue for you. If you have typically worked whilst studying 4 courses then being out on I.T and studying 1 course should not be an issue. It’s all about planning and setting routines, taking things bit by bit, prioritizing and being realistic in your goals. 16
