<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> new book listing and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> final year-to-date supplement are issued.<br />

After <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> listing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> new books has been made, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> year-to-date<br />

supplement is printed, during alternate m<strong>on</strong>ths. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> twelfth m<strong>on</strong>th,<br />

a complete revisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> catalog is prepared, instead <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a year-todate<br />

supplement. Provisi<strong>on</strong> has been made via a c<strong>on</strong>trol card, for<br />

adding older books to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> master file without selecting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

new book listing.<br />

Copies <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>on</strong>thly <strong>Library</strong> Bulletin are distributed to about<br />

500 individuals, departments, and libraries within M<strong>on</strong>santo. About<br />

seventy -five copies <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> book catalog (and supplements) are distributed<br />

to libraries, departments, laboratories, and some individuals.<br />

Those who have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> catalog keep a copy <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Library</strong> Bulletin for<br />

reference during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> alternate m<strong>on</strong>ths when no supplements are<br />

issued.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Computer System<br />

As part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> systems evaluati<strong>on</strong> study, c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> was<br />

given to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> existing punched card records into a format<br />

acceptable to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> computer system. If it had been necessary to<br />

re -punch <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> records for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 7,000 volumes already cataloged, justificati<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> change would have been more difficult. Programming<br />

for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong> turned out to be almost as difficult as writing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

operating programs.<br />

M<strong>on</strong>santo's problems resulted from devices which had been<br />

used in programming efficiently for unit record equipment, especially<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Document Writer (IBM 870 Document Writing System)<br />

. The most<br />

serious <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se was a lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> complete card c<strong>on</strong>trol in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> existing<br />

punched cards. A "1" punch in column 1 <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first card in each set<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cards and a "2" punch in column 1 <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r cards in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> set for<br />

each book had been used. This had been d<strong>on</strong>e because <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> very<br />

limited ability <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Document Writer to recognize c<strong>on</strong>trols. If <strong>on</strong>e<br />

thing was learned from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> whole project, it was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> importance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

adequate card c<strong>on</strong>trol.<br />

Ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r problem encountered was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> eliminati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> card c<strong>on</strong>trol<br />

characters which had been punched into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> original cards to<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trol printing <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Document Writer. For instance, a n<strong>on</strong>printing<br />

% symbol had been punched at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> title to cause a<br />

carriage return. These special characters were not needed in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

new system, and had to be removed. They were removed during an<br />

editing and move -up step in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong> program.<br />

Many o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r problems were solved during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong> ei<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

by programmed routines or by error messages. Where very complicated<br />

programming and/or an unreas<strong>on</strong>able amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> machine
