When ways in which to mechanize library operati<strong>on</strong>s are c<strong>on</strong>sidered,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is no doubt that it is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cataloging product which,<br />

more than any o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r operati<strong>on</strong>, holds excepti<strong>on</strong>al promise for costreducti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

This has been M<strong>on</strong>santo 's experience. Of all library<br />

operati<strong>on</strong>s, M<strong>on</strong>santo placed initial focus <strong>on</strong> cataloging, c<strong>on</strong>quered<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> problem in two phases, which led it from a semi-automatic to a<br />

fully automated product, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n set sights <strong>on</strong> fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r areas to mechanize.<br />

We all look forward to knowing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> M<strong>on</strong>santo's fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r experience<br />

<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> latter in terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cost and effectiveness <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> product.<br />

With respect to mechanizing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cataloging product, some<br />

libraries have employed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> computer to deliver catalog cards as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

product. In so doing, 30 per cent savings were achieved over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

best available manual method <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> catalog card producing (utilizing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

electr<strong>on</strong>ic typewriter) .<br />

M<strong>on</strong>santo eschewed this step, going directly from catalog card<br />

to printed page. When it did this, it achieved additi<strong>on</strong>al savings in<br />

equipment and space; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se are not identified by William A. Wilkins<strong>on</strong>.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>sidering equipment al<strong>on</strong>e, savings in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> order <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 30 to 1 are<br />

effected when <strong>on</strong>e supplants card -catalog cases by shelves even<br />

wood shelving, which is double <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cost <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> metal shelving. Savings<br />

in space are not so spectacular, being <strong>on</strong>ly in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> order <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 3 to 1.<br />

(For a fuller treatment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> such comparative costs, <strong>on</strong>e may read <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

article by Fred Heinritz,! which is a c<strong>on</strong>densati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his doctoral<br />

To summar-<br />

dissertati<strong>on</strong> submitted in 1963 to Rutgers University.)<br />

rize: respecting <strong>on</strong>ly equipment and space, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> codex catalog is<br />

immeasurably less expensive than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> card catalog.<br />

You will recall that in 1963 Wilkins<strong>on</strong> reported M<strong>on</strong>santo's<br />

comparative costs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> manually produced catalog cards versus machine<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> codex 2 catalog. It is my belief that cost c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

were again <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dominant determinant in M<strong>on</strong>santo's<br />

decisi<strong>on</strong> to c<strong>on</strong>vert its codex catalog producti<strong>on</strong> from a semiautomatic<br />

system to <strong>on</strong>e fully automated (computer based). Then<br />

late in 1963, cost estimates showed M<strong>on</strong>santo that possible savings<br />

in keypunch time, card handling, and card filing would, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first<br />

year <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> operati<strong>on</strong> al<strong>on</strong>e, more than pay <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> programming costs.<br />

While Wilkins<strong>on</strong> does not state it, my c<strong>on</strong>jecture would be that M<strong>on</strong>santo<br />

was also prompted by two o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s in deciding to<br />

effect this c<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong>, namely, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> potential spin-<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fs that were so<br />

highly desirable and attainable at no extra cost (see Wilkins<strong>on</strong>'s<br />

items D and E under "Systems Study") and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> attainable improvements<br />

in existing products see Wilkins<strong>on</strong>'s items ( A, B, and C under<br />

"Systems Study") .<br />

Cost, not c<strong>on</strong>cern for or interest in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reacti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scientist<br />

or engineer to use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> codex catalog, determined <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> instituti<strong>on</strong><br />

and refinement <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> machine methods at M<strong>on</strong>santo. It would be interesting<br />

to know how M<strong>on</strong>santo's users <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> technical informati<strong>on</strong> reacted<br />
