placed <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> left, beginning <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first line <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> each entry. This is<br />
no l<strong>on</strong>ger <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case. There are two reas<strong>on</strong>s for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> change. First, it<br />
was believed that it would be logical for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first word in each entry<br />
to be <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> filing word, and all o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r informati<strong>on</strong> would follow. 3 As you<br />
can see, this is now <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case in each part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> catalog. Sec<strong>on</strong>d,<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are two pieces <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> in each entry which toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r tell<br />
where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> book is shelved: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> call number and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> locati<strong>on</strong> (library<br />
branch) code. This informati<strong>on</strong> was separated when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> call number<br />
was at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entry, but now can be found in <strong>on</strong>e area at<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> right. M<strong>on</strong>santo finds that it is a good reminder to catalog -users<br />
that it is a uni<strong>on</strong> catalog and that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y must note both call number<br />
and locati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Several features which have been programmed to appear automatically<br />
in each entry even though <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are not punched into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
input cards are:<br />
A. Asterisks are inserted at both ends <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> each subject heading<br />
to make <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> heading stand out better <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> page.<br />
B. Joint authors are punched with two blank columns between<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> "I" card (see Fig. 3) . The program causes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
authors to appear <strong>on</strong>ce in this order and <strong>on</strong>ce in reverse<br />
order as two separate entries in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> catalog. Also, during<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> print program an ampersand is inserted between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m.<br />
C. No decimal is punched in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> classificati<strong>on</strong> number. It is<br />
inserted automatically during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> printing step.<br />

Schedule <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Operati<strong>on</strong><br />
A completely revised catalog is produced yearly. Cumulative<br />
supplements are issued every two m<strong>on</strong>ths. A subject listing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> new<br />
books is issued every m<strong>on</strong>th. During <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>on</strong>th, a card file is maintained<br />
in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> library to locate cataloged books not yet listed in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
catalog or supplements. This schedule is flexible, so that revisi<strong>on</strong>s<br />
or supplements can be made more or less <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten depending <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
need. It is felt that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present schedule is quite satisfactory.<br />
During <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>on</strong>th, as new books are cataloged, punched cards<br />
are prepared for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>on</strong>thly run. On <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> eighteenth working day <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
each m<strong>on</strong>th (generally about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> twenty -fifth day <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>on</strong>th) all<br />
additi<strong>on</strong>s, changes, and deleti<strong>on</strong>s cards are processed against <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
master and heading files .<br />
(tapes) Then all new records are selected<br />
to produce <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> listing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> new books, which is distributed widely as<br />
M<strong>on</strong>santo's m<strong>on</strong>thly <strong>Library</strong> Bulletin at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>on</strong>th. Selecti<strong>on</strong><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> records from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> master tape is c<strong>on</strong>trolled by "keys" in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
master record for each book, <strong>on</strong>e for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>on</strong>thly new book listing<br />
and <strong>on</strong>e for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> year-to-date supplement. The keys are erased after
