EMISSION MEASUREMENT
Wärtsilä offers a system for emission measurements which meets local
and international regulations such as the IMO Annex VI of Marpol 73/78
regulations for the prevention of air pollution from ships. This code demands
certified equipment, accurate calibrations, correct measurement procedures
and skilled personnel.
The measurements are carried out accordance with the technical code
for a number of different load conditions corresponding to the application
category. For correct NOx calculation the following inputs are needed:
••
Engine speed and torque
••
Fuel consumption
••
Temperatures of the ambient air, charge air and cooling water
••
Pressure and humidity of the ambient air
••
Exhaust composition with regard to NO X , O 2 , CO 2 , CO and HC.
EMISSION MONITORING
Continuous emission monitoring provides on-line data on the environmental
performance of the installation. The purpose of the monitoring can be to
comply with legislative requirements, reporting for trading purposes, as
well as process control of emission control systems such as SCR. A wide
range of monitoring systems is available on the market including systems
based on in-situ or extrative type analyzers as well as parametric emission
monitoring.
For the lifetime performance of the monitoring system it is crucial to
choose the optimal system considering a wide range of parameters. Wärtsilä
will integrate the optimal technical solution into the plant or ship system,
considering the purpose of the monitoring as well as the specific features
of the installation. Among parameters to consider are the purpose of the
monitoring, emission components to be monitored and their concentrations,
engine type, operating profile as well O&M considerations. In addition
to seamless integration of existing systems, Wärtsilä has developed
an emission monitoring module tailored for cost efficient monitoring of
emissions in multiengine installations operating on HFO.
