National School Safety Pilot Project (NSSPP)<br />
It is proposed to be launched to strengthen the earthquake<br />
preparedness of schools in high seismic risk areas in Zones IV<br />
<strong>and</strong> V. Checklists <strong>and</strong> Formats for school safety are being<br />
prepared. The Project aims at carrying out school safety<br />
awareness campaigns, undertaking safety audit of school<br />
buildings; <strong>and</strong> retrofitting of weak structures.<br />

The main activities undertaken by the<br />
NDMA for this Project pertain to<br />
developing a strategy for mapping <strong>and</strong><br />
assessing l<strong>and</strong>slides, proposing a<br />
monitoring mechanism for active<br />
l<strong>and</strong>slides, formulating parameters for<br />
assessing losses, capacity development<br />
<strong>and</strong> awareness generation.<br />
National Flood Risk <strong>Mitigation</strong> Project (NFRMP)<br />
In order to minimize the losses to life, property, agriculture <strong>and</strong> other infrastructure due to floods,<br />
the Project proposes the strengthening of flood preparedness, mitigation <strong>and</strong> management measures.<br />
1.4 ROLE OF NGOs IN PREPAREDNESS<br />
NGOs play a pertinent role in all phases of disaster management. The NDMA has brought about<br />
detailed guidelines on the role of NGOs in disaster management. There are many types of NGOs:<br />

NGOs with large field operations <strong>and</strong> substantial resource base such as Red Cross Society,<br />
CARE India, OXFAM<br />
NGOs that deal with development technology such as disaster management institutions run by<br />
non-governmental control<br />
Interest Groups such as environment groups<br />
Local occupation groups of traders, doctors, etc.<br />
Resident Welfare Associations<br />
Education <strong>and</strong> training bodies run by NGOs<br />
