Tasks to be Performed by 3- tier Panchayat Bodies are quite specific for <strong>Preparedness</strong><br />

Planning<br />

Gram Panchayats/Block Panchayat Samitis/Zilla Parishads<br />

1. Convening meetings of ward members to ensure proper information regarding the<br />

warning signals being given to the people through all types of media.<br />

Supervising preparedness of the Gram Panchayats<br />

Attending meetings of District Collector, all District Heads of different sectors <strong>and</strong><br />

departments, <strong>and</strong> the Members of the Zila Parishad for preparedness<br />

2. Updating information on civic amenities, population, government <strong>and</strong> panchayat<br />

properties<br />

<br />

<br />

Consolidating village wise information on items listed under GP<br />

Coordinating all the concerned departments, specially Roads & Buildings, Major <strong>and</strong><br />

Minor Irrigation, PDS, Communication Police, Revenue Electricity, etc., to take up<br />

necessary repair <strong>and</strong> maintenance related works for preparedness to counter disasters.<br />

3. Selection of location for shifting people/ livestock to safer places<br />

Stocktaking with respect to Primary Health Centres, preparedness of medical staff,<br />

medicines, etc.<br />

Arranging for transport to assist Gram Panchayats for evacuation<br />

Maintaining cyclone shelters/ safer buildings like schools in ready condition for temporary<br />

shelter for the people<br />

Arranging for establishing relief <strong>and</strong> rehabilitation centres <strong>and</strong> materials required thereof<br />

Providing for supply <strong>and</strong> storage of food <strong>and</strong> other items of basic necessities<br />

Organizing ‘Task Force’ at District, Block <strong>and</strong> Village levels<br />

Making special arrangements for evacuation of h<strong>and</strong>icapped, children <strong>and</strong> pregnant women.<br />

Encouraging engineering staff at the Block/M<strong>and</strong>al level to repair drainage/canal/ roads<br />

etc.<br />

4. Medical/sanitation requirements in relief camps<br />

Contacting ex-army / security forces personnel / volunteers to organize a task force to<br />

assist people in emergency<br />

Checking the inventories of items required at a short notice for rescue <strong>and</strong> relief operations<br />

during disasters<br />
