Jeffrey D. Spitler, Ph.D.,PE

Jeffrey Spitler is the C.M. Leonard Professor in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Oklahoma State
University, where he teaches and performs research in the areas of heat transfer, thermal systems, design cooling load
calculations, HVAC systems, snow melting systems and GSHP systems. He is currently directing research projects
funded by ASHRAE, the U.S. DOE, the Federal Highway Administration, and York International Corporation. He is the
president of the International Building Performance Simulation Association and is a Fellow of the American Society of
Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-conditioning Engineers. He has served on several ASHRAE technical committees–
Energy Calculations, Geothermal Energy Utilization, and Design Load Calculations and ASHRAE Research Administration
Committee. He has authored or co-authored over 70 technical papers and four books.
Louis C. Torbett, PE
Engineering PC, Inc.
Torbett is a practicing engineer, licensed in several states. He has been in private practice since 1979. His expertise
includes heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning design (HVAC), electrical power and lighting, plumbing systems and
fire protection design. Torbett is adept in systems applications and designs for central plants, medical facilities, “clean
rooms”, schools, institutions, industrial, and manufacturing facilities. He specializes in the commercial application of
geothermal heat pumps.
Torbett developed “in-house” computer applications to optimize both the production and design of HVAC., electrical,
plumbing and fire protection systems. This customization is third-party to the popular Autocad (tm) program and
has specialized geothermal equipment templates, modular well layouts, and details specific to the geothermal heat
pump industry.
Gregory S. Wells, CGD
Jackson & Sons Drilling & Pump Inc.
Greg Wells has designed and managed the installation of thousands of tons of vertical commercial geothermal heat
exchangers in a multi-state area. He is an IGSHPA accredited installer, an IGSHPA accredited trainer, an ASHRAE
associate member and an IGSHPA certified geoexchange designer. Wells has 19 years of geothermal experience as a
system designer and installer, along with past experience as a manufacturer’s representative for geothermal heating and
cooling equipment.
Shawn Yunsheng Xu
University of Missouri-Columbia
Xu, a research associate professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia, worked as an associate professor at Tsinghua
University in Beijing and received his Ph.D. in thermal engineering in 1990. He promotes GSHP though presentations,
seminars, media programs and engineering consulting in China. Xu’s research and technology promotion have been
supported by Chinese and U.S. governments. He finished a demonstration project in Beijing in 2004 with grants from
U.S. Department of Energy and Beijing Municipal Government. Xu has been appointed as a consultant to adapt renewable
energy systems in facilities for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. He is an active member of the International
Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA), and is the founder and director of the IGSHPA Chinese Chapter.
