The museum is part of Bad Sulza’s salt
processing plant and is housed in one of
the buildings formerly used by the facility
dating from 1848. The museum, which was
opened in 1954, tells the history of the
town’s saltworks, and its salt extraction
and spa industries. Highlights of the guided
tour include the “Konventsaal” conference
room (the board room of the former
directors of the plant) and a presentation
on the history of pharmacies.

August 27 2002, the eve of Johann
Wolfgang Goethe’s 251st birthday, saw
the official opening of the second Goethe
summer house just below the Toskana
thermal baths in Bad Sulza. This highprofile
duplicate of the original summer
house in Weimar’s Ilm Park was originally
erected in 1999 as part of the European City
of Culture celebrations and is well worth
a visit.
The summer house also hosts temporary
exhibitions, workshops and other events.
