The museum is part <strong>of</strong> Bad Sulza’s salt<br />

processing plant and is housed in one <strong>of</strong><br />

the buildings formerly used by the facility<br />

dating from 1848. The museum, which was<br />

opened in 1954, tells the history <strong>of</strong> the<br />

town’s saltworks, and its salt extraction<br />

and spa industries. Highlights <strong>of</strong> the guided<br />

tour include the “Konventsaal” conference<br />

room (the board room <strong>of</strong> the former<br />

directors <strong>of</strong> the plant) and a presentation<br />

on the history <strong>of</strong> pharmacies.<br />

August 27 2002, the eve <strong>of</strong> Johann<br />

Wolfgang Goethe’s 251st birthday, saw<br />

the <strong>of</strong>ficial opening <strong>of</strong> the second Goethe<br />

summer house just below the Toskana<br />

thermal baths in Bad Sulza. This highpr<strong>of</strong>ile<br />

duplicate <strong>of</strong> the original summer<br />

house in Weimar’s Ilm Park was originally<br />

erected in 1999 as part <strong>of</strong> the European City<br />

<strong>of</strong> Culture celebrations and is well worth<br />

a visit.<br />

The summer house also hosts temporary<br />

exhibitions, workshops and other events.<br />
