For a perspective other than nature and the arts, traditional festivals
offer an insight into various strands of the Weimarer Land region’s
history. Every year, thousands of visitors enjoy Weimar’s Arts Festival
and Onion Market, Apolda’s Fashion Night, the Thuringian wine festival
in Bad Sulza, and Kranichfeld’s Festival of Dance and Roses, to

The cosmopolitan town of Weimar on the
banks of the River Ilm has been both, the
focus and source of many sweeping cultural
and intellectual events over the past four
hundred years. .5 million tourists visit the
city every year and fall under its extraspecial
spell, following in the footsteps of
great luminaries, or simply enjoying the
charms of a small urban centre with a
global outlook and a warm welcome for its
visitors. The beautifully redeveloped town
centre hosts an array of heritage spots and
sites associated with Goethe, Schiller, Liszt,
Nietzsche and the protagonists of the
Bauhaus movement. And Weimar is still a
cultural force to be reckoned with today,
with its German National Theatre, annual
arts festival and select cabaret events. With
such a sophisticated range of attractions on

You can trace many different histories in the Weimarer Land region. The castles and palaces are
full of interesting facts on the Wettin dynasty, and local battles fought by Napoleon, to name
but two examples. Alternatively, journey back to medieval times on the trail of knights and

This lowland castle, covering four hectares
and previously the property of the Teutonic
Knights (until 1809), consists of a central
castle and a bailey, with a triple system of
surrounding moats and walls, some of which
are incorporated into the adjacent village. A
distinctive feature of the castle is its status as
Europe’s last surviving example of a“Durchgangsburg”(castle
traversed by a thoroughfare),
having been constructed on
Kupferstrasse (“copper road”), the old trading
route between Hamburg and Venice. Every

The striking grounds of this moated castle
are located within the Weimar-Jena-Apolda
triangle, two kilometres from the B7
highway and right in the middle of the
idyllic hamlet of Kapellendorf. The castellans
of Kirchburg built the first stone castle
in the mid-twelfth century, with the aim of
protecting the copper and wine trade route
which passed close by. Today, visitors are
greeted by the remains of the complex’s
outer defence wall and main building and,
as they enter the castle ward, the stump of
the keep. The castle, encircled by a moat
and defensive wall, was accessible from the
south side via a drawbridge and gateway.

This romantic little town with imposing
castles on both banks of the river Ilm offers
plenty to see and do. As you climb from the
centre of this doubly-fortified town up to
the fairytale Renaissance castle above, a
fabulous view of the idyllic Ilm valley opens
up before you, revealing its attractions for
walkers, cyclists and anglers. Once in the
outer grounds of the castle, why not take
an extended walk, or pay a visit to the

The twelfth-century castle core, incorporating
a main building, castle chapel and keep,
was built on a projecting spur, and in the
style favoured by the Thuringian castle lords
of the time. Today’s outer facade is heavily
characterised by the castle’s subsequent
conversion to the renaissance model. The
castle’s partially-restored west wing now
hosts a permanent exhibition on the castle’s
history. The Upper Castle is a choice venue
for numerous cultural events, including
concerts, theatrical performances, European
Heritage Open Day, and also civil weddings.

The Battle of Jena-Auerstedt in 1806 constitutes
an important moment in European
history. At Auerstedt, the main Prussian
army, commanded by Field Marshal Karl
Wilhelm Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick,
unexpectedly faced Marshal Davout’s
French forces in battle on 14th October
1806. Napoleon's troops went on to inflict a
crushing defeat upon the Prussian army.
The 1806 memorial vividly brings these
events back to life.

Ettersburg Palace, made up of the threewinged
Old Palace (1706-12), with an adjoining
church to the east and fronted to the
south by the main building (the New Palace:
built in 1722 and renovated from 1728-40),
was used as a summer residence by Duchess
Anna Amalia from 1776 to 1780. Members
of the Duchess’literary and musical set –
which included Wieland, Goethe, Herder,
Johann Karl August Musäus and the actress
Corona Schröter amongst others – would

meet up here in the summer months; and
there were even performances by Goethe’s
amateur dramatic group, the “Weimarer
Liebhabertheater”. These aesthetic practices
were resumed at the end of the 19th century

Some ten kilometres to the west of Weimar,
you will find the small Thuringian town of
Ossmannstedt. This town was the home of
writer, playwright, translator and journalist
Christoph Martin Wieland from 1797 to
180. The manor house, in which Wieland
and his large family lived, has recently
been restored, refurbished and converted,
in partnership with the Weimar Classics
Foundation and the Hamburg Foundation
for the Advancement of Science and Culture.

Bell Museum
Apolda’s Bell Museum was founded in 1952
and charts the cultural history of the town’s
legendary bells – from the beginnings to the
present day – in five sections: the history of
bells, the development of the European steeple
bell, the manufacture of bells, the journey
from the foundry to the steeple, and bell
ringing. Visitors are allowed to touch and
strike most of the bells on display, and as
they wander around the museum, they are
accompanied by an assortment of recorded
rings, chimes and clangs!
Municipal Museum
Apolda’s municipal museum has a section
entitled “The History of Apolda’s Textile Industry”
which traces the development of
the local knitting trade, which was Apolda’s
main line of business for more than 400
years. A multitude of machines, models and
pieces of clothing help to bring the story of
this industry's development to life.

The permanent exhibition entitled “Olle
DDR” has a huge assembly of thematicallyarranged
exhibits – more than 1,200, in
fact, ranging from old East German brands
of cleaning products to official documents.
This comprehensive collection is no random
mishmash however, but a portrayal of daily
life in East Germany, and as such, vividly
re-awakens long-buried memories. Time
having soothed the strongest passions, this
“blast from the past” is able to raise smiles
in its visitors, but also provides an opportunity
for reflection. This exhibition sets out to
portray the history of everyday life in East

The basket-makers’ museum in Tannroda
Castle is one of a kind. It vividly portrays the
basket-weaving tradition, which was one of
Tannroda's most significant industries until

The Coudray House in Bad Berka is used
today as a forum for a diverse range of cultural
events. The building, first built in 1825
as a spa and society house for Bad Berka’s
health visitors, now plays host to temporary
exhibitions, concerts, cabaret and

“Tonnensaal” hall. On the ground floor
there is a permanent exhibition entitled
“Das Goethebad im Grünen” (Goethe’s
Country Spa), which documents Goethe’s

The museum is part of Bad Sulza’s salt
processing plant and is housed in one of
the buildings formerly used by the facility
dating from 1848. The museum, which was
opened in 1954, tells the history of the
town’s saltworks, and its salt extraction

Wolfgang Goethe’s 251st birthday, saw
the official opening of the second Goethe
summer house just below the Toskana
thermal baths in Bad Sulza. This highprofile
duplicate of the original summer

erected in 1999 as part of the European City
of Culture celebrations and is well worth

The Thuringian Potato Dumpling Museum
is dedicated to all things related to the Thuringian
Potato Dumpling and potatoes in
general. The Dumpling Museum is an interactive
museum, ideal for children, groups,

a seminar on potato dumplings, potatobased

Seventeen historical carriages belonging
to the Foundation of Weimar Classics have
found a new home in an outbuilding of
Auerstedt Manor that has been converted
into a museum. For the grand opening,
visitors were graced by the presence of

in 1806, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna,
daughter of the Russian Tsar, and her

To the north of the village of Hohenfelden,
right on the edge of some woods, you
will find a cluster of buildings called“Am
Eichenberg”. This, the main location of the
Open-Air Museum, consists of a group of rare
historical buildings brought to Hohenfelden
from other villages in central Thuringia, as
they could not be preserved in situ. Grand
old farmhouses, tiny beehives, a brewery,
village school, workshops and barns: all in
all, more than 0 authentically-furnished
historical buildings give a fascinating insight

Kranichfeld’s Baumbach House is named
after the poet Rudolf Baumbach (1840-
1905), who was born here. A tour of the
house reveals interesting details about
its history. There is a small exhibition on
Baumbach’s life and work. He is perhaps
best remembered for his popular songs, like
„Hoch auf dem Gelben Wagen“. The small
museum also stages temporary exhibitions
alongside the permanent Rudolf Baumbach
display.
The museum café can seat 40 diners and,
as well as being an attractive destination
for groups, also doubles up as a venue for

Bad Berka is a spa and holiday resort steeped
in many layers of tradition. Johann Wolfgang
von Goethe, then living locally as a privy
councillor, was quick to spot the potential of
this small but upcoming spa in such beautiful

A salt-evaporation works is an aerated
wooden framework construction using
blackthorn twigs, which originally served
to increase the concentration of mineral
salts in a saline solution. As some salt
particles are carried away when the solution
evaporates, the air in the immediate vicinity
becomes salty, providing the ideal conditions
for therapeutic treatments.
The vapour room, which was added to the
salt-evaporation works, allows visitors to

The Middle Ilm Valley, a 150 km² conservation area, is the perfect spot to unwind. This is a
place where you can get away from the day-to-day grind, encounter rare plants, and simply
revel in nature’s tranquillity – whether that be at the Hohenfelden Reservoir campsite or on
the banks of the river Ilm. There are well-signposted and beautifully prepared cycling and
hiking trails for active holidaymakers, which stretch right across the Weimarer Land region,

Weimar, then using the Hohenfelden
reservoir as a base gives you a wide range

One of the prettiest villages along the river
Ilm is Eberstedt. There is a small but imposing
church and lay-by on the banks of the Ilm,
and a fountain bearing the weight of the
world (in the form of a framework globe).
Visitors become the pointer on a giant, walkon
sundial, using their body to cast the
shadow: a spot of teach-yourself physics with
some fun thrown in! Other points of interest
include the reconstruction of the historical oil
mill with its“Zuppinger”water wheel, mill
shop and floating wooden huts. Nature at
its best, and a sure-attraction for walkers,
cyclists, horse-riders and anyone else.

Perched on a hill in the village of
Leutenthal, there is a permanent, open-air
exhibition of miniature models of traction
engines. The traction engines and steam
tugs, steam-driven band saws and diggers
look just as if they had been standing in a
barn for 100 years gathering rust. Visitors
are able to interact with the Leonardo da
Vinci models and find out for themselves

in different directions. They can then give
full rein to their artistic talents at the
potter’s wheel or shaving horse in one of

Thuringia constituted Germany’s foremost
dye-producing area. Using naturally-grown
dyes to colour cloth and other materials is
one of Thuringia’s foremost craft traditions.
For those wishing to learn more about
naturally-grown dyes, a range of seminars,
talks and guided tours really make this
subject accessible.
Neckeroda’s garden of plants for dyeing
is a treasure trove of knowledge on the
abundance of dye plants, medicinal herbs
and “wonders by the wayside”.

This small animal park, right on the Laura
Cycle Route and halfway between Erfurt,
Weimar and Sömmerda, sets great store by
direct visitor/animal contact. Parrots,
parakeets, pheasants and apes are housed
in cages, whilst alpacas, waterfowl, poultry,
maras and kangaroos roam freely around
the park. Other attractions include an
animal petting area, barbecue, playground,
trampoline, nature trail, bowling alley and
restaurant. What’s more, visitors can book
in advance for more interactive fun: alpaca
rides, feeding time with the animals,
bowling, natural art and crafts, games and
dancing with Joey the clown (children’s
parties or open-air classroom sessions).
The park can accommodate overnight
guests in holiday apartments or tepees.

Built in honour of the first Chancellor of the
German Empire, Otto von Bismarck, the
2.75m tower was inaugurated on 25 September
1904. 9 stone steps lead to a viewing
platform. From here, visitors can enjoy a
splendid view of Apolda and the Weimarer
Land region.

from Weimar to Grosskochberg
From 1775 to 1788 the young poet often
hiked to the castle "beyond the hills" to visit
his fiancée, Charlotte von Stein. The wellsignposted
trail leads through richly-varied
scenery and charming villages. The many
places of interest along the route include
Buchfart's historical mill and unique hilltop
castle, Neckeroda (the village of dyes), Luisenturm
tower and Kochberg Castle – one of
the jewels in Thuringia's crown. Follow Goethe´s
footsteps on the 28 km long trail!

Napoleon cycle trail
and footpath
More than 200 years have now passed since
the twin battles of Jena and Auerstedt in
1806 – but the trail, peppered with numerous
memorial stones and monuments, keep
the memory alive. Display boards present a
wealth of information on the historical
events, tales and legends. Unspoilt scenery
awaits you - plus a view of the same battlefield,
which once spread itself out before Napoleon
Bonaparte or Marshal Davout.

CYCLING THROUGH THE
WEIMARER L AND REGION
Cycling is steadily gaining in popularity.
For spur-of-the-moment cyclists, bicycles
can be hired from the tourist information
offices in Bad Sulza, Bad Berka and
Kranichfeld.
Ilm Valley Cycle Route
Nature, history and culture – a veritable
feast of things to see and do: The 125 km Ilm
Valley Cycle Route follows the blue ribbon of
the river Ilm from its source in the Thuringian
Forest, through Stützerbach, right up to its
confluence with the river Saale near Kaatschen-Weichau.
The trail goes through small
villages with enchanting churches and past
manor houses, castles, museums and mills,
each crying out to be visited. Many of the
route's attractions in Weimar, home of classicism,
are listed as UNESCO world heritage
sites. Each section of the route has its own
particular charms - and even its own particular
climate. Cyclists should be sure of planning
enough breaks not only for rest but for
interesting discoveries!

Laura Cycle Trail
The 46 km Laura Cycle Trail completes the
link between the Ilm Valley Cycle Route
near Weimar and the Unstrut Cycle Route
near Sömmerda. Tracing the route of Laura,
the former narrow-gauge railway, this is a
mellow and welcoming swathe of countryside.
Far from mass tourism, all the gems
survive, tucked away in this idyllic region:
the rural customs, age-old village churches,
half-timbered farmsteads, windmills on the
edge of town, ancient linden trees, and
woad stones. Other must-sees include the
Thuringian Dumpling Museum in Heichelheim,
Ordensburg Castle in Liebstedt, the
"Tirica" theme park, and Leutenthal's
"Mechanika da Vinci" exhibition.

Feininger Cycle Trail
This 0 km cycle trail gives you the chance to
retrace Lyonel Feininger's progress around
the Weimarer Land region, whilst getting to
know some of his favourite motifs and admiring
a host of unmissable cultural landmarks.
Feininger himself was a keen cyclist
and always took his pencil and sketchpad
whenever he ventured out. Explore at your
leisure the charming villages to the south of
Weimar within the Middle Ilm Valley conservation
area – a favourite haunt of Feininger´s
between 1906 and 197. Attractive
glass display panels at each stopping point
show a Feininger painting of a particular
church, with a grandstand view of the radiant
original. You are, after all, in Feininger
country!

Towns of Thuringia Cycle Route
The cycle route extends right across the
"Free State of Thuringia", linking seven of
the region's prettiest towns between Eisenach
and Altenburg. Along the way, you
can explore the delightful nature of this
densely-forested region. Staging posts
along the 225 km route include the towns
of Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar, Jena and Gera,
where cyclists with an interest in the arts,
culture and technology will find there is a
wealth of things to do and see. Historical
ancient town centres, parks and gardens,
museums and much, much more: you are
sure to have a varied set of experiences as
you retrace the paths of German Leviathans
of the arts.

Bad Berka’s charming location and surroundings
play a big part in the spa resort’s
appeal to visitors, who enjoy exploring the
area at their leisure, either on foot or by
bike. This idyllic little town is surrounded
by a network of more than 200 kilometres
of signposted footpaths as well as several
designated nordic walking trails for active
walkers. The Paulinenturm (Pauline Tower)
at the top of Adelsberg hill is one of the
nicest places to visit. From here visitors are
treated to a magnificent panorama, and
can look out over towns, villages, dense
woodland and broad valleys, as far as the
peaks of the Thuringian forest.
