To the north of the village of Hohenfelden,
right on the edge of some woods, you
will find a cluster of buildings called“Am
Eichenberg”. This, the main location of the
Open-Air Museum, consists of a group of rare
historical buildings brought to Hohenfelden
from other villages in central Thuringia, as
they could not be preserved in situ. Grand
old farmhouses, tiny beehives, a brewery,
village school, workshops and barns: all in
all, more than 0 authentically-furnished
historical buildings give a fascinating insight
into the day-to-day domesticity and working
life in the rural Thuringia of yesteryear.

Kranichfeld’s Baumbach House is named
after the poet Rudolf Baumbach (1840-
1905), who was born here. A tour of the
house reveals interesting details about
its history. There is a small exhibition on
Baumbach’s life and work. He is perhaps
best remembered for his popular songs, like
„Hoch auf dem Gelben Wagen“. The small
museum also stages temporary exhibitions
alongside the permanent Rudolf Baumbach
display.
The museum café can seat 40 diners and,
as well as being an attractive destination
for groups, also doubles up as a venue for
a varied programme of cultural events.
