Bell Museum
Apolda’s Bell Museum was founded in 1952
and charts the cultural history of the town’s
legendary bells – from the beginnings to the
present day – in five sections: the history of
bells, the development of the European steeple
bell, the manufacture of bells, the journey
from the foundry to the steeple, and bell
ringing. Visitors are allowed to touch and
strike most of the bells on display, and as
they wander around the museum, they are
accompanied by an assortment of recorded
rings, chimes and clangs!
Municipal Museum
Apolda’s municipal museum has a section
entitled “The History of Apolda’s Textile Industry”
which traces the development of
the local knitting trade, which was Apolda’s
main line of business for more than 400
years. A multitude of machines, models and
pieces of clothing help to bring the story of
this industry's development to life.

The permanent exhibition entitled “Olle
DDR” has a huge assembly of thematicallyarranged
exhibits – more than 1,200, in
fact, ranging from old East German brands
of cleaning products to official documents.
This comprehensive collection is no random
mishmash however, but a portrayal of daily
life in East Germany, and as such, vividly
re-awakens long-buried memories. Time
having soothed the strongest passions, this
“blast from the past” is able to raise smiles
in its visitors, but also provides an opportunity
for reflection. This exhibition sets out to
portray the history of everyday life in East
Germany – nothing more, nothing less.
