APM Research Committee Proposal for Joint Plenary
Session for Academic Internal Medicine Week 2009

On behalf of the Association of Professors of Medicine (APM) Research
Committee, thank you for the opportunity to propose a plenary session on
mentoring for Academic Internal Medicine Week 2009 in Philadelphia,
PA.
The APM Research Committee is interested in developing a series of
plenary sessions focused on mentoring issues that could be presented
during successive membership meetings. The series will begin during the
2009 Winter Meeting in San Francisco, CA, with a plenary session on
problems of and effective approaches to mentoring physician-scientists.
For Academic Internal Medicine Week 2009, the committee proposes a
joint plenary session on mentoring physician-scientists throughout key
career transition points of interest to APM, the Association of Program
Directors in Internal Medicine, Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine,
Association of Specialty Professors, and Administrators of Internal
Medicine members:
Medical school to residency.
Residency to fellowship.
Fellowship to junior faculty.
Junior faculty to senior faculty.
Topics session speakers could focus on include:
Data on career choices and the drop off rates.
Financial considerations.
Mentorship opportunities.
Institutional resources.
Programs at specific schools that have been successful.
It is the committee’s intention is to produce an APM publication at the
conclusion of these sessions that focuses on mentoring best practices.
