3.2.2 Ethyl lauroyl arginate<br />
The Committee was requested to review the test method for L-arginine·HCl<br />
and ethyl arginate·2HCl in the specifications for ethyl lauroyl arginate. The<br />
existing specifications were revised at the current meeting.<br />
3.2.3 Glycerol ester <strong>of</strong> wood rosin<br />
At the present meeting, the Committee decided that the specifications for<br />
GEWR developed at its forty-sixth meeting (Annex 1, reference 122) should<br />
be reconsidered in connection with the <strong>evaluation</strong> <strong>of</strong> the two new rosin esters,<br />
GEGR and GETOR.<br />
The Committee noted that the existing specifications for GEWR contain a<br />
chromatographic method <strong>int</strong>ended to distinguish among the rosin esters based<br />
on the identification <strong>of</strong> their resin alcohols, but recognized that both the chromatographic<br />
method and the sample chromatograms <strong>of</strong> the alcohols are quite<br />
old (mid-1980s). The Committee considered that it is likely that the method<br />
is outdated and that the chromatograms no longer represent products currently<br />
in commerce. The Committee received information that the original method<br />
has been updated since the specifications for GEWR were published, but did<br />
not receive the updated method. Data submitted on the resin acid composition<br />
<strong>of</strong> different batches <strong>of</strong> glycerol esters <strong>of</strong> rosins in commerce do not generally<br />
support the relative proportions <strong>of</strong> resin alcohols considered to be characteristic<br />
<strong>of</strong> the different rosin esters, as given in the gas chromatographic<br />
procedure in the monograph for GEWR.<br />
The existing specifications for GEWR were revised to include a lower limit<br />
for lead and the sulfur test as an identity criterion to differentiate between<br />
GEWR and GETOR and to remove the purity test for hydroxyl number and<br />
the identification test “Gas chromatography <strong>of</strong> resin alcohols and glycerol”.<br />
The specifications were made tentative pending the submission <strong>of</strong> infrared<br />
spectra that correspond to the commercially available products, data on the<br />
resin acid composition obtained with updated chromatographic techniques,<br />
and additional information on methods that enable the identification <strong>of</strong> the<br />
individual rosin esters and their differentiation. This information should be<br />
submitted by the end <strong>of</strong> 2010.<br />
3.2.4 Nisin preparation<br />
Nisin preparation was on the agenda at the request <strong>of</strong> the fortieth session <strong>of</strong><br />
CCFA (7) to clarify the existing specifications prepared by the Committee at<br />
its sixty-eighth meeting (Annex 1, reference 187).<br />
The Committee discussed the title <strong>of</strong> this monograph, because it is inconsistent<br />
with that used in the INS list, where it is given simply as “nisin”. This is<br />
