Explosive Detection K-9 Unit
• In 2009, the APD K-9 Unit, consisting of
three handler teams, successfully
completed their annual recertification
process.
• K-9 teams continued to focus on
becoming familiar with the new terminal
environment.
• Recurrent training continues to keep
the teams proficient.
• K-9 teams responded to a total of 883
runs.

• Numerous hours were spent on cargo
searches per TSA regulation.
• One K9 officer, Garry Purcell, resigned
from the unit due to personal reasons.
• The unit suffered a tragic loss when
Officer Williams partner, Jarko, died.
• Officer Williams was paired with a new
partner, Nitro and both have been quite
successful.
