LODGE MEETINGS
May 8, 2012
May 22, 2012
8:00 PM
ALL MEMBERS INVITED
My fellow members,
The new Elk Year is off to a fast
start. The installation of your officers
on March 31 st was an unparalleled
success. At the installation, PER
Gregg Olivera announced several
important awards. He named Carol
Butti as the new Elk of the Year recognizing
her tireless efforts in support
of Special Children. Carol is an inspired Elk
with a deep passion for helping those less fortunate.
Her positive impact on many Lodge activities
has been significant over many years. Jim
Caruso was named as the Officer of the Year.
Jim has been a major force in driving our Special
Children’s Committee over more than 15
years. In addition, Jim was recognized for his
many years of service as an officer of our Lodge.
Jim is now our newest trustee and we look forward
to his guidance and experience as we manage
the affairs of the Lodge. Lastly, Patricia
Hoey was recognized as the Citizen of the Year
for her constant devotion and amazing work in
managing the annual Turkey Trot fund raiser
in Manasquan. This event generates significant
funding which supports town projects and is
eagerly anticipated by the runners every year.
It is a huge undertaking which Pat manages
without complaint or recompense. Tom Pellegrino
and Shirley Smith were also recognized
for their work on Americanism but particularly
for the Essay Contest in which our Lodge submitted
over 600 essays versus 40 last year!
Great job Shirley and Tom.
Some new Committee chairs have been named.
Bill Freund has been named to lead the House
Committee and his team is already engaged to
help improve Lodge operations. Gregg Olivera is
now the leader of the Fraternal Committee and
Gene Heisler leads the Activities Committee.
Donna Bossone has stepped up as Lodge Activities
Chair and Karen Jansen will be our photographer.
Andy Mazur will lead the Vets Committee
and Carol Butti will lead Special Children.
Gregg Olivera has also been named SED Hoop
Shoot Chairman. Congratulations to all and
thank you for your contributions to the Lodge
and Elkdom.
Spring is finally here and the weather is warming
up which signals the return of many members
from warmer climes. We look forward to
renewing our fraternal bonds with them. The
pace of Lodge Activities is also picking up. On
Sunday, May 6 th many of the officers will be
Mike Sinneck
participating in the annual Walkout on
Drugs. We’ll march on the Seaside
Heights boardwalk at noon to raise
funds and build awareness regarding
drug abuse. Please sponsor an officer to
march for you. Any contribution is welcome.
May 13 th , which is Mother’s Day we’ll
hold our usual monthly breakfast and
follow it at 12:30PM with the Mother’s
Day service. This simple but poignant ceremony
pays tribute to our mothers whether living or
dead. We encourage all members to bring their
moms to the ceremony or to join with us in remembering
their moms.
On May 28 th at 10:30 AM, we’ll join the VFW
Memorial Day Service by marching in the Memorial
Day Parade and participating in the
ceremony to remember those who gave their all
so we can be free. We’ll assemble at the Manasquan
Board of Education building at 9:30 AM.
The parade steps off at 10:00 and the wreath
laying ceremony will start at 11:00 AM. I expect
a great Lodge turnout. Please come out and
march with the members and Antlers. Don’t
just watch from the sidelines. Lastly we’ll be off
to Wildwood from May 31 to June 3 for the Annual
NJSEA Convention. Noel Benkoil and the
Convention Committee are doing a terrific job
getting everything ready. We’ll need some help
to load/unload on both ends of the trip so please
volunteer some time to help the Convention
Committee. On June 14 th we’ll hold the annual
Flag Day Ceremony. We’re looking for a great
turn out as we remember and celebrate our
Flag how it has evolved over the years.
Mark your calendars to participate in these and
all Lodge activities. Don’t forget Sid’s café and
our daily lunches, raw bar and Sunday Happy
Hours. Join your brothers and sisters for
friendly conversation, great food, camaraderie
and libations. I look forward to seeing you at
the Lodge. Please also remember to bring any
ideas for improvement or concerns to my attention.
I promise to listen carefully and take appropriate
action when required.
God bless you, God bless our troops and God
bless America.
Fraternally,
Mike Sinneck, ER

ABOUT THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS...
Manasquan Lodge #2534 is an incorporated Lodge and as
such we are required by law and Grand Lodge Statute to
have a Board of Directors. The Board is compromised of
the four chair Officers of the Lodge and the Trustees of the
Lodge.
All of the duties and authority conferred on the Board of
Trustees under Section 12.070 of the GL Statutes are now
vested in the Board of Directors. Colleen Smith was
elected Chairman of the Board and Jim Caruso was
named Secretary.
The responsibilities of the Board include: establishing the
budgets for the club and the lodge, controlling the funds
and investments of the Lodge subject to approval by the
members, controlling the assets of the Lodge, and conducting
annual inventories. In other words the Board has a
primary responsibility to ensure the financial health and
well-being of the Lodge.
The significant change in approach is that the chair officers
are now members of the Board. This should improve
and expedite communications across a wide range of potential
challenges.
The Board of Directors are agents of the Lodge and cannot
act independently to spend or encumber funds without
first getting expenditures approved on the floor. In other
words the Board is not an independent operating entity.
They are subject to the same controls and disciplines
which governed the Trustees in the past. Overall this is a
good change for our Lodge and one we should support
and embrace.
Fraternally,
NATIONAL SERVICE VETERANS COMMITEE
Dues Notices are coming out mid-Feb – be on the look out!!!
Greetings to All from your Veterans Committee!
Fantastic things are in the works ranging from Dinners
and Dances to Baseball Day trips to Golf Outings,
all fueled by the great camaraderie and enthusiasm
of the participating committee members.
Wow! What a great team to work with and be part
of!
In jumping in as Chairman I had to ask and re-ask
myself why are we Elks soooooo enthusiastic in
helping Veterans? The answer is obvious: to honor
our nations Warriors who defend our freedom to
live well. In that spirit, I urge every Elk to be an
example to our community and Live Well. Use all
your talents and gifts God has given you, be it leadership
skills, cooking, networking, money, spreading
love and joy, whatever they may be. The best
honor we can give our nations military personnel,
and to each other, is for each of us to live as best
we can toward our potential. They fought to give us
this freedom. Lets use it! And one way to live well
is to join the Veterans Committee. Meetings are
the 3 rd Thurs of each month at 6:30. We need help
in public relations, event coordination, and meeting
with other committees and groups. Bring a smile
and enthusiasm. Party Poopers will be asked to
leave.
And the first thing to smile about is to sign up for
the Goddard Golf outing to he held May 14 th . The
price is right, the place is right, the people are
right. Sign up board in the lobby. And don’t forget,
the top prize this year is for the Best Dressed Foursome.
(If we can’t golf we might as well look good
while we try!)
We also have 50 (down to 48) Blue Claws tickets
available. Game will be July 1 st at 1:00. So plan to
have a nice day at the ballpark with some Veterans,
family, and friends. Contact me, Andy Mazur, for
tickets.
Care of Your Flag
The life of your Flag depends on your care. Dirt can
cut fabrics, dull colors and cause wear. Most outdoor
Flags can be washed in mild detergent and
thoroughly rinsed. Indoor and parade Flags should
be dry cleaned. Damaged Flags can be repaired and
utilized as long as the overall dimensions are not
noticeably altered. Our Lodge, American Legion
posts and local governments often have facilities to
dispose of unserviceable Flags. Store your Flags in
a well-ventilated area away from harsh chemicals
or cleaning compounds.
If your Flag gets wet, never store it until
completely dry. Wet folds cause permanent
creases. Dampness ruins fabric
and causes mildew. Pole care is also related
to Flag care. Rust and scale cause
permanent stains and some metallic oxides
eat holes in fabric.

The newest program in Elkdom is an old one! Yes, it is the Junior Elks Program called "the Antlers." It is a chance for young people
in our communities to get involved with the Elks in the many service-related projects our Lodges sponsor.
The program was initially organized in the late 1930's and went well for several years as an active arm of the Elks. However, by
the 1960's interest in the program had waned and was ended. Recently, a few Lodges including Manasquan #2534 have restarted
the program with great success.
The Antlers of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America has as its major objective the following:
• To quicken the spirit of American Patriotism
• To teach respect for parents and love of home
• To inculcate the fundamentals of good citizenship
• To aid in a worthy cause
• To establish foundation of character
• To promote the welfare and enhance the happiness of its Members
• And to respect the conviction of others in the matters of worship and religion is true Americanism
Membership in the organization is open to any individual who has passed their twelfth and not yet reached their twenty-first birthday,
who is a citizen of the United States of America, of good character and who believes in the existence of God.

Mountains, Elks Camp Moore offers a fun filled vacation away from home for children
with special needs. A week at Elks Camp Moore is a remarkable experience not
soon to be forgotten. The primary goal of the camp is to further develop the recreational
camper experiences new adventures, lasting friendships, and opportunities that
promote independence and greater self-confidence.
Together we will enjoy a day of sun, sand, surf and a barbeque lunch. The children will arrive at
