. ear Sir
c ould you please tell me if you have ever ~eefore?
The main r eason wh y I think that you might haJe heard of me is
because I am the author of a paper which is entitled
"Rad ios pectroscopic Study of Astrophysical Photon Source Flares and
t h e SETI", which was published in the March 1982 issue o f the Journal
of the British Interplanetary Society, in the UK. As you probably·
a l ready know, SETI is an acronym for Search for Extr a ~T erzestrial
Intelligence. In my paper I proposed-and analyzed the-ide a of making a
t r ans mitter beam axis alignment into the sky directions opposite from,
or 180 degrees away from, the measured sky positions of transient
as t rophysical photon source flare events such as supernovas , novas,
X-Ray and Gamma-Ray bursts, and , most e$pecia11y, powerful transient
radio sources, with a transmitter activat~o n on or about the time of
event observation , so as to cause the broadcast signal to be
inte r c epted during t he course of the radio astronomical study of the
eve nt, or events, assuming appropriate signal processing, at all
p o s sibl e f u t ure reception poi n ts within the transmitter beamcone -
hence t he title o f the paper. And I also did propose the idea of
mi n i miz i ng the travel distance of the initial contact message signal ,
usi ng t he pa rent stars as a best - avai l able approximation of the
s pac e - t ime position s of the transrnitter and the receiver, with a
c on sequen tly minimi zed signal a ttenuation due to signal travel path
length . I will elaborate on this idea upon request. What i s your
perception of the status of expert op~nion concerning my 1982 SETI
paper, and my two proposed radio S E~I strategies? I could send you
a copy of my paper if you would like , but I invite you to analyze my
two ideas for yourself~ perhaps together with your associates and
::: c llc .:lgue s, using your own scientific a nd mathematical acurnen .
Pleas e do let me know what your conclusions are. There is certainly no
ques t ion about the inherent scientific value of r adio astronomical
s t udy of al l types o f astrophysical photon source flares. The re i s
also no que stion that racl.io astronomers should be of course a.lert to
the pos s i bili ty of alien artificial rad~o signal detection during the
course of a l l types of radio astronomical operations, ~ n any directi on,
a nd at a ny time . There is a lot of evidence of the occurrence of
massive , col ossal , explosions, f a r vaster than supernovas, i n the
c e nters of some galaxies , suc h as M'82 , NGC 1275 (Pers·eus A), and in
the c enter o f our own · galaxy, a s well . And I am sure that you have
hea rd a bout the mysterious brightening of Eta Carina £rom 183 7 to 1845,
duri ng wh i ch Eta Carina became near ly a s bright a~ Sirius, and then
f a ded . The origins and causes of t hese mysterious photon source flare
events i s one of the most outstanding unsolved mysteries o f modern
as t r onomy . And finally, are you at all concerned about the clear
possibility of some other nation acquiring very large amounts of
data a nd i nformation from advanced aliens v ia radio waves·? I believe
t ha t it is···possibTe , · aTfh.ou:gn···n.a·t cerfairi ; that s uch infcii:ma tion coul d
quite possibly give its recepients an insuperable milit ary advantage
over o t he r na tions. Have you ever t hought very much abou t t his
p ossibility? I have, and it worries mf a great deal. .fl~t_b'?~_9 ()..JS:ll.l_
f eel ? Please do l et me know. I will look forward t o hearing from you,
"and perlia p"s"-'fr o m' your"asso c i ates, sometime soon.
