Cat ® strengthens mid-range planing hull propulsion line
with new C15 engine with ACERT Technology
Lighter successor to 3406E delivers 7% more power
News
Caterpillar has launched another new marine propulsion engine featuring its
revolutionary new ACERT ® Technology as the earthmoving, materials handling and
power systems giant continues to establish new standards of power density in the planing
hull pleasure craft sector.
The new C15 engine with ACERT Technology replaces the highly successful 811 mhp
(597 bkW) 3406E electronic marine propulsion engine. With very similar dimensions and
footprint but almost 50 kg lighter, the C15 ACERT engine is rated at 865 mhp (634 bkW)
at 2300 rpm and because of its ACERT Technology building blocks, is also likely to
deliver better fuel economy, lower maintenance costs and longer engine life, even
compared to the Cat ® 3406E which achieved an outstanding reputation for economy,
robust reliability and longevity.
A 14.6 liter in-line 6 cylinder electronically controlled, turbocharged and aftercooled
marine propulsion engine, the C15 engine with ACERT Technology is positioned, in the
C family range, between the 715 mhp (526 bkW) C12 and the 1015 mhp (746 bkW) C18
marine propulsion engines – a line up which now offers class-leading levels of power
density (low weight, small footprint, high power) as well as Caterpillar’s proven
reliability, fuel economy, minimal exhaust emissions and unrivalled global support, to
owners and builders of yachts between 50’ and 70’ in length.
In the C15 ACERT engine, a combination of combustion technologies including more
advanced control of fuel delivery and air management, together with new combustion
chamber design, leads to the more complete combustion of fuel and, as a consequence,
the development of higher power density, better fuel economy and lower emissions –
properties which are among the most critical to purchasing decisions in this highly
competitive part of the marine propulsion marketplace.
“The C15 engine with ACERT Technology is a very exciting new engine for Caterpillar,”
says Jeff Greener, Caterpillar’s Global Pleasure Craft Manager. “The 3406E, one of the
cleanest and most advanced engines in its class since its introduction in 1996 has been an
extremely successful engine in the marine marketplace and the new C15 has a great deal
to live up to. Having said that, with its greater power density, lighter weight and ACERT
Technology, we are very confident that Caterpillar will be first choice for owners and
builders who are looking for the ultimate in performance in the 865 mhp (634 bkW)
power range.
“Our customer-focused approach to marine engine development is paying off and we will
continue to listen to the needs of the marketplace as we develop new solutions, new
ratings and new engines in the future.”
