4 “Modern”enumerations<br />
Thecl<strong>as</strong>sicalmethodsoftypesettingenumerations<br />
workwellforpaperpublications.Theyarecompletelyunsuitableformultimediapresentations,flyersortechnicaldocumentation.Suchcreationsare<br />
typesetso<strong>as</strong>tofacilitatequickaccesstovariousportionsoftextwhich,similartodictionaryentries,are<br />
self-containedentities.<br />
Accordingly,thenatureofenumerationsisdifferent.Spacingismoreimportantandthesameis<br />
trueoftheshapeandposition(withrespecttothe<br />
contentsoftheenumeration)ofthesymbolsused<br />
tolabeltheconsecutiveitems—theseareusually<br />
justentries.Thenatureofthesymbolsh<strong>as</strong>also<br />
changed—theyplayadifferentrolethaninthecl<strong>as</strong>sicalenumerations.Theyarenowrather“roadsigns”<br />
saying:“hereisthebeginningoftheinformation<br />
whichmightbeimportantforyou.”Thereforethey<br />
shouldbereadable,ofapropersizeand,ifpossible,<br />
