HIGHWAYS AND ENGINEERING - Barnsley Council Online

Engineering Services are the council’s inhouse
highways service delivery unit.
Functions include:
• Highway maintenance – operational
delivery of all works to roads, footways,
bridges, street lighting, etc
• Inspection of roads and footways
• Programme management
• Engagement and management of
specialist contractors, subcontractors,
material, plant materials and equipment
suppliers
• Adverse weather response, eg ice, snow,
frost and flood
• Fleet provision, maintenance and control
• Purchase, storage and management of
stores and supplies
• We aim to minimise disruption to road
users and to improve road safety
through control and enforcement
• We aim to repair faulty street lights
within 5 working days; to make safe
vandal damage within 1 hour; and to
replace knocked down illuminated
bollards within 2 working days.
• We will ensure that abnormal loads use
suitable routes within the borough
• We will ensure that new streets are
constructed to a suitable standard for
adoption by the council
• We aim to ensure that rights of way are
always open for public use
Our aims
• We inspect activities taking place
within the highway to ensure that the
work is carried out to national standards
for safety and quality
• We inspect roads and footways to
national standards to ensure they are in
a safe condition. Any serious hazards
identified will be repaired within 24
hours
• We aim to prevent frost and ice forming
on our main roads. In the event of
heavy snowfall we will make every effort
to keep our highway network clear.
