‘Tis the season to be blue?

Ahh yes, the holidays are
upon us once again. Everywhere
you look, decorations
adorn store fronts and everyone
is talking about giving thanks
and counting blessings. It’s a
time full of hugs, kisses, laughter
and joy. Yet you feel sad,
depressed and anxious. You
cry for no reason and wonder
why you’re being so negative
on such a joyous time of year.
You’re not alone –it is not the
most wonderful time of the year
for everyone.
These feelings can originate
from a variety of sources –unrealistic
expectations about
the holidays, increased social
demands, financial hardship, a
recent loss of someone important
to you, stress or fatigue.
You see, this is a particularly
vulnerable time of year.
The media, society and those
around you tell you to be happy.
Instead, you may be missing
your family or your current
situation is different from what
you hoped it would be. Perhaps
you have wonderful or dreadful
childhood memories of this
season that have resurfaced, or
your expectations are unrealistic
and you don’t understand
why.
We might notice that the holidays
can bring up painful and
unpleasant feelings. Past holidays
may have been difficult, or
our lives may not be as fulfilled
as we would wish. There may
be loneliness, sadness or anger.
Here are a few ways to recognize
a bad case of holiday blues:

1. Depressed mood most
of the day almost every day.
2. Feeling restless, anxious,
agitated, and unable to sit still.
3. Feelings of worthlessness
and low self-esteem.
4. Fatigue and low energy,
unable to get out of bed.
5. Recurring thoughts of
death or suicide.
6. Difficulty concentrating.
7. Insomnia
8. Loss of interest in your
usual daily activities
If your holiday blues are
stemming from past losses, take
advantage of the holidays to
help you complete your mourning
and finish your grieving
over the loss. Make realistic
expectations for the holiday
season, and set realistic goals
for yourself. Do not pull all
your energy into just one day –
the holiday cheer can be spread
from one holiday event to the
next. Also, you don’t have to
attend EVERY holiday party
–it’s OK to pass on a few, or
else you’ll feel overwhelmed
and stressed.
If you’re lonely, try volunteering
some of your time
to help others. Find holiday
activities that are free, such as
looking holiday decorations,
watching movies, or the winter
weather, whether it’s a snowflake
or a raindrop.
Keep track of your holiday
spending. Overspending can
lead to depression when the
bills arrive after the holidays
are over. Extra bills with little
money to pay them can lead to
further stress and depression.
So get help, give help, and
don’t stay alone. Honor your
own feelings. While nobody
wants to feel depressed, recognizing
your sadness can mean
that something isn’t working
in your life.
If it’s something you want to
change, hey, it’s almost time for
those New Year’s resolutions,
right? Pay attention to what
your body is telling you and remember,
“being happy doesn’t
mean that everything is perfect,
it means that you’ve decided to
look beyond the imperfections.”
“Texting, friend or foe?”

Text messaging has done two
things for men when it comes to dating
or men attempting to score a date.
It’s either helped us show off our
wittiness via text, or has made us
out to be the lame not-so-interesting
borderline creepy guy.
Text messaging has added a new
dimension to the dating game. If
used correctly, we can show women
a whole new side of us through the
power of text. It’s our chance to be
funny and charming with only 140
characters (because no one likes a
multi-page text.)
Be wise with your text and always
read them before you send them.
Even with the simplest of text, make
sure it makes sense. You never want

For years, Dinosaur George has
traveled the country as a public
speaker, writer and television personality.
He’s spoken to over one million
people and has lectured at over 2500
museums, schools, and public events.
On Saturday December, 4 from 9
a.m. to 11 a.m. at Hardberger Park
on Blanco Road, George Blasing
better known as “Dinosaur George,”
debuted artifacts not yet seen at any
of his other presentations.
“I often wonder if I’m going to
wake up and find out it’s a dream. I
get to entertain kids, educate them,”
said Dinosaur George.
The event at Hardberger Park is
unique to most of Dinosaur George’s
previous events because it’s outdoors

one misspelled word to throw off the

can’t get it back.
Countless times I’ve wished I
could either have that message I
just sent back, or wish I would have
ended one text sooner.
Also, never be the back-to-back
machine gun texter. There is nothing
worse than sending five random
thoughts that could have been
summed up in one clever text. Nothing
says desperate and annoying
more than someone who texts like
an AK-47.
Before, we could only make fools
of ourselves in person or over the
phone. Today, the new outlets of
communication have made some of
us think we are the next Shakespeare
when it comes to texting.
Just because these new lines of
communication are open, doesn’t
necessarily mean it’s okay to text as
you please. I’m still a firm believer in
face to face interaction, but a simple
text can be an incredible tool when
pursuing that special someone. Never
text anything you wouldn’t say in
person.
If you plan on texting a girl something
amusing and sharp, give it some
thought, but don’t try too hard. Your
best stuff will come when you are

As Dinosaur George explained, it
was nice to speak outdoors because it
gives the younger kids a better understanding
of the size of the animals that

and text. When you’re drunk, your
spelling goes out the window and it
looks like your five-year-old brother
sent the text. Besides, while drunk,
you might text something you’d
never think of while sober. It’s best
not to take the chance
If you are one of the few texters
gifted with the ability to actually
send amusing texts, don’t get full of
yourself. My only advice is, if she
texts you and you read it, then wait
30 minutes to text back because you
want to be cool—don’t. Females
know we have our phone with us
24/7 these days, they are on to the
cool-guy trick and will quit texting
once you do it.

After a disappointing third film,
this fourth and final installment of
the “Shrek” series is as refreshing
and funny as the first two movies.
After growing tired of the
domestic routine, Shrek makes a
deal with Rumpelstiltskin to get
his roar back. And in a turn taken
from “It’s a Wonderful Life,”
Shrek discovers that maybe his
world would be a better place if
he put things back to the way they
were — and he has only 24 hours
to reverse the contract.

Grab The Popcorn!

Hang on tight, “Unstoppable”
will take you on a thrilling ride.
I’d heard a lot of hype surrounding
Denzel’s new action
movie in the last few weeks. If
you know me, then you know
I usually skip movies that get
hyped prior to their opening.
In fact, I never saw “Avatar,”
“Napoleon Dynamite,” or the
first “Twilight” movie until they
hit DVD. My fear is that these
movies have such huge budgets
that, ultimately, they try too
hard and leave us disappointed.
Well, I’m very happy to say
that this was not the case with
“Unstoppable.”
Simply put, the film was inspired
in part by the true story
of a runaway train. The unbelievable
incident happened back
in 2001, when a train in Ohio
managed to leave the railroad
yard hauling 40 cars without a
conductor at its controls.
The movie stars Hollywood
legend Denzel Washington (You
should know which movies he
was been in!) as Frank Barnes,
a 28-year railroad veteran who
has been teamed up with a first
day rookie.
The rookie, in this case, happens
to be conductor Will Colson,
played by rising star, Chris
Pine (“Star Trek,” “Smokin’
Aces”). Of course, we all know
what happens when you place a
rookie and a veteran together…
friction. The bickering and personal
differences suddenly stop
when both men find out there’s
an out of control train headed
towards a small town. It’s only
then that they realize they might
be only hope at stopping this
pending disaster.
“Unstoppable” has everything
I look for in a movie and, more
importantly, is well worth your
time and money. It definitely
makes my Top 10 list for the
year and gives me hope that
great movies can still come out
of Hollywood from time to time.
What you need to know, is
that, while it’s not 100% based
on the true story, it is, without
a doubt, another great Denzel
Washington flick that will leave
you completely satisfied.
So, is it good? Watch it and
you decide!

He may not be Carlos Santana,
but Roberto Valderrama rivals his
idol when his fingers fly over his
guitar strings.
“As a small child, my brother,
Luis Carlos, stood guard at the
door when I first snuck into my
father’s room to tinker with his
guitar,” Valderrama said during
an interview at the Hispanic Entertainment
Archives.
“I was five when my mom
caught me and I thought I was
really going to get it. Instead
she said, ‘Do you really want
to learn?’ Then she made dad’s
guitar accessible when my father,
Antonio, who worked on a ranch,
was gone from Monday to Friday.
On weekends, I would see and
hear him and my Uncles play.
That’s how I learned.”
“My parents knew I loved that
guitar and when I misbehaved at
school, they would punish me by
taking the guitar away.”
As soon as he was tall enough,
his father took him to a compadre
who handmade the string instruments
and had Valderrama pick
out his own guitar.
“My mother then forced my
brother and me to sing and learn
lyrics to songs my dad performed
at fiestas and wound up joining
him on those gigs around Juarez,
Chihuahua, Mexico.”

Roberto Valderrama pays it forward by giving

Arts Center presents “Cine En
El Barrio,” a monthly film series
showcasing classic and contemporary
work by Latino filmmakers
from across the globe will
kick off.
The event will feature “Where
God Left His Shoes” and “On
the Horizon: Stop Motion Animation.”
The films will be
shown at the Guadalupe Theater
Next, Valderrama found out he
had the innate gift of being able
to duplicate any guitar sounds
on his maternal grandmother’s
on 1301 Guadalupe Street.
“Where God Left His Shoes,”
was directed by Salvatore Stabile
and released in 2007. The
hour and half film stars John
Leguizamo, who plays a father
(Frank) of two. When he along
with his wife and kids are evicted
from their New York City
apartment the family is forced
to move into a homeless shelter.
An opportunity arises for
the family to move into an
apartment in a nearby housing
project, but Frank needs a job
by the end of the day to become
piano. Angela Terrazas, was so
impressed, she sent him to the
music conservatory in Mexico,
D.F. to study for four years.
The Guadalupe Cultural Arts

Valderrama’s turning point
came when he got hooked on rock
n’ roll. However, he was unable
to play it because he had been
brought up on Mexican music.
While in the conservatory and
studying classical music, his heart
still belonged to rock music. So
he spent most of the allowance
money his grandmother sent him
on concerts.
“In 1972, a few classmates
and I went to see Santana when
did three concerts in Puebla.
However, on the third night, we
hung around outside with about
100 other people from the conservatory
because we didn’t have
the money for admission,” the
59-year-old guitarist said.
As luck would have it, movie
soundtrack composer Sergio
Gutiérrez plus actors Héctor
Lechuga and Xavier López Rodríguez
a.k.a. Chabelo saw the
group of diehard dedicated fans
and paid for all of them to go in.
At one point in the show, Santana
asked the audience if anyone
wanted to come up on stage and
play with him and all of Valderrama’s
friends pointed to him,
then they and his friend, Javier
Batiz, dragged him all the way to
the stage, but Valderrama refused
to go up. However, he did stay
there to watch his idol in action.
After the show ended, Valderrama
and a couple of his friends
went between a bodyguard’s legs
and ran to Santana, who bowed
and hugged them. Before they
were pulled away by security,
they got an invite to join Santana
at a private VIP party at the home
of Manuel “El Loco” Valdés
Castillo.
“That party was the max for
me,” Valderrama said with a joyful
face.
After hearing Valderrama play,
Santana pulled him aside and said,

Julián Elías Gil Beltrán es el nombre
real de este idolatrado argentino
que nació el 13 de junio de 1970, y

Yo era la persona que más ganaba
dinero en mi casa en ese tiempo”,
dijo en entrevista cuando estuvo
promocionando los “Aguacates de
México”.
Consejos a los jóvenes
A pesar de tener un lugar privilegiado
frente a las cámaras y exponer
sus recetas culinarias, Chef
Pepín, trata de ayudar a los demás.
Una forma de hacerlo es hablar
sobre la nutrición, y balanceo de
comidas, especialmente entre los
niños y jóvenes.
“Tenemos que comer, pero hay
que ser cuidadosos con lo que
comemos. Yo veo que hay muchos
niños que tienen demasiado complejo
con la comida. Hay que comer
balanceado y comida sana, dicen
que no hay comida mexicana sana,
pero si de verdad nos ponemos a
ver, esa comida ha sido la primera
comida orgánica que existía. Fíjate
lo que se come en México: el maíz,
el aguacate, el arroz, y las verduras.
Más sano que eso no hay, la manteca
no venía con los aztecas, esa
se la pusimos nosotros. Esa comida
básica la podemos utilizar para
alimentarnos”, compartió.
Chef Pepín compartió algunas
ideas que tiene para que todo esto
mejore y tengamos una juventud
más sana. Uno de sus planes es
enseñar a los niños pequeños
a comer ensaladas. “A mí me
gusta hablar mucho con los niños,
a donde me llaman voy a hablar
con los niños. Fui a un colegio de
niños hispanos todos, entonces me
dijeron que me quedara la hora del
almuerzo. Había como tres tipos
de ensalada, de cómo quinientos
muchachos, solo dos estaban comiendo
ensalada. El corazón se
me puso triste. Una de las cosas que
la decisión de desnudarme, no solo
para la mujer que padece cáncer de
mama, sino también para mis fans
sin importar sexo”.
Por otro lado, Gil fue el ganador
del Premio People en Español 2010,
en la categoría Novelas: Revelación
del Año, por su participación en
Sortilegio. Esta premiación es muy
importante, ya que la selección es
realizada a través de los lectores que
votan en la página de cada actor, lo
cual hizo que Gil tomara este lugar.
Gil, aparte de participar en telenovelas,
ha formado parte del teatro y
de la pantalla grande. Algunas de las
obras de teatro en las que ha participado
son, “Descarados”, “El crimen
del Padre Amaro”, “Sexo, pudor y
lágrimas”, “Salvemos la Selva”, “En
pelotas” y “La princesa en el lago de
los cisnes”. Dentro de sus películas se
encuentran “La caja de problemas”,

Hecho a Mano: una exposición de artesanías para todos los gustos

El pasado viernes 3 de diciembre
comenzó el vigésimo cuarto
evento Hecho a Mano, el cual
permanecerá abierto al público
hasta el domingo. Hecho a
Mano es una plataforma en la
cual participan diversos artesanos,
quienes ofrecen una
gran variedad de artículos a la
venta hechos a mano, los cuales
satisfacen diferentes gustos y
precios, con el objetivo de darle
opciones al público para realizar
sus compras navideñas.
La recepción de apertura del
evento se llevó a cabo en la
galería del Centro Cultural de
Arte Guadalupe, en donde se
ofreció una “fiesta” al público.
El requisito para asistir al primer
día del evento fue pagar una
cuota de 10 dólares, aportación
permitió disfrutar de bebidas,
aperitivos, música de DJ, así
como la oportunidad de hacer las
primeras compras de artesanías
en Hecho a Mano.
“En este evento participan
55 artistas y vendedores, que
son principalmente de los alrededores
de San Antonio, al

le tenia a una persona puesta y le
decía 'A este gordo no me lo dejes
pasar por la cocina porque se lo
come todo'. Es un niño grande, es
una gran persona y tiene una linda
familia”.
Los consejos de Chef Pepín,
siempre van a favor de la salud y bienestar
de las familias latinas. Solo
hay que escuchar sus expresiones
cuando habla de su gente para saber
que en él tenemos un aliado.
Estamos pasando tiempos
difíciles, falta de trabajo, hay
depresión, entonces viene la comedera
y a engordar. Comer es lo
único que nos da gratificación inmediata,
comprar una televisión o
un refrigerador ese no es inmediato.
Comiendo tenemos la gratificación
inmediata si estamos deprimidos.
Ahí es cuando tenemos que
decir que no a la comida hay que
correr,hacer ejercicio, pegarle a
algo para sacar la frustración y salir
de la cocina”.
Pepín cuenta que en sus viajes ha
encontrado latinos por todas partes
del mundo y a todos quiere llevar
su mensaje de positivismo y salud.
Algo que al parecer es muy difícil
pero para Chef Pepín no todo es
imposible.
“Los hispanos estamos regados
igual que algunos artesanos
mexicanos y de Nuevo México”,
dijo Chris Davila, quien es
coordinadora de la exhibición
en el Centro Cultural de Arte
Guadalupe.
Hecho a Mano estará abierto
al público hoy hasta las 6 p.m.
y tiene un costo al público de 2
dólares por persona, o bien dos
latas de comida, mismas que
posteriormente serán donadas al
San Antonio Food Bank.
Este evento tiene una gran
variedad de precios, cuenta con
artículos desde 99 centavos
hasta de más de mil dólares.

Estados Unidos. “Nos tienen miedo

El piloto mexicano Jorge
Mendoza, competirá en la serie
Nascar de Texas, la cual arrancará
en febrero del 2011 en
Kyle, cerca de Austin.
Actualmente Mendoza se
encuentra en preparación para
su regreso a las carreras. Dicho
regreso a la actividad automovilística
es un gran compromiso
para el piloto, pues dice sentirse
muy renovado y con muchos
proyectos.
“Siempre he tratado de estar
involucrado en diferentes actividades,
pues soy una persona
muy inquieta”, dijo Mendoza.
“Para mí el estar en San Antonio
me hace muy feliz porque aquí
tuve las mejores experiencias de
mi vida y sé que vienen nuevas y
mejores para este 2011”.
El piloto asegura haber sido
muy miedoso e inseguro desde
pequeño, y el haberse venido a
estudiar su carrera profesional
a San Antonio lo hizo independizarse
en muchos sentidos,
comenzando por la gran dedicación
y desempeño que puso
en las artes marciales y en otras
actividades extracurriculares.
“Tengo muchas experiencias
buenas y malas en mi vida, sin
embargo todas me han dejado
algo bueno, pues me dan ese

The parade, now in its second
year, consists of thirteen members
who each decorated a kettle
with a Christmas theme. To
attract votes, participants- who
consisted of local celebritiesdecorated
a Salvation Army red
kettle and promote it online.

Mendoza indica que para
llegar a tener lo que uno quiere
en la vida, se necesita mucha
motivación, y viéndolo desde
un punto de vista integral, es
importante que los jóvenes sepan
que su mente debe recibir
temas de apoyo como el civismo
y la salud.

organizaciones que estén a cargo

“Never stop playing.”
“That was the inspiration to
continue in my studies, excel
and become the guitarist I always
dreamt of becoming. In 1973, I
recorded with Sangre Chicana
and after I finished my studies
in 1975, I went to El Paso and
formed Talisman, a rock’n’roll
band.
“I left Mexico because I loved
rock n’ roll and I was dedicated
to this music,” he explained of
his move.
Although he was a tremendous
singer, with the exception of some
harmonies, Valderrama had never
sung in English, but he could
imitate. In spite of having performed
with the greatest Mexican
musicians, he decided to come to
a complete halt and he entered
the regular workforce laboring
at various jobs in Florida, North
Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.
After a 20 year hiatus, the
extraordinary guitarist moved
to Austin, got a job in structural
metal and started practicing again.
Today, Valderrama is paying
it forward by making musical
dreams come true.
“I love to teach because I love
music so much, but I not only
teach, I also give them the instrument,”
he stated.
Asked how he was able to afford
this generous act of kindness,
he revealed his secret, “We get a
lot of damaged returns at the store
I work at.
“Those we are unable to resell
and we have to throw them away.
So I take them out of bins, trash
cans, then I fix them and give
them away; and sometimes it’s
as simple as tightening a screw.”
“If I could buy them I would.
Unfortunately I can’t afford to
buy to give. I also have a lot of
free time, so I love to teach at the
flea market without compensation
because I’m there all day long.”
“I do so because no one wanted
to teach me when I was a child.
However, if the students don’t
study, they cannot continue.”
“He’s all heart,” student Tibisay
Wong said. “Music is therapy
and giving a child the gift of music
is great therapy.”
Christie Wagoner, another
student added, “He does a lot of
worthwhile things, but he does not
want attention.”
“Music is so big and I reach
such a high level of spiritually
that it is selfish not to share it,”
the guitar Santa Claus said of his
good deeds.
As for himself, Valderrama
greatest personal satisfaction is
playing his guitar at different
open mikes in Austin and San
Antonio.
“Sometimes bands offer me
money to, but I don’t pursue
money by playing. I don’t live
to be on stage and have hundreds
of people cheering,” he said. “I
just want to play and achieve a
certain level.”
In closing Wong said, “His
style is like Santana, yet his music
is different and he makes his
guitar sing.”

mucha más experiencia que tú. Para tus papás tu siempre serás su niña, y es
difícil como padre darse cuenta que los hijos crecen. Tal vez ellos esperaban
que te enamoraras de alguien de tu edad. Dales tiempo para que vean que la
relación con tu novio es formal, si tu novio realmente te quiere será paciente y
sabrá ganarse la confianza de tus padres. Mucha suerte y que Dios te bendiga.
Cuando vemos una pareja en la que el hombre es mayor, y la mujer bastante
jovencita, seguramente los que están a su alrededor, se preguntan cuál es el
interés del uno por el otro.
Lo que estamos acostumbrados a ver en una relación amorosa, es que el hombre
es mayor en edad que la mujer, pero obviamente, siempre hay excepciones.
Los psicólogos explican que cuando el hombre acepta y busca como pareja a una
mujer mayor demuestra inconscientemente la necesidad de protección materna,
y cuando la mujer permite una relación con un hombre menor posiblemente
refleja cierta inseguridad, temor de permanecer soltera y tendencia al dominio.
Algunos puntos a tener en cuenta en una relación de pareja. Se pueden compartir
gustos, objetivos e ilusiones, a pesar de las diferencias de edades. En toda
relación de a dos (sin importar la edad) es necesario hacer concesiones, y queda
en cada miembro de la pareja saber que límites pondrá y que aceptará para hacer
feliz a la otra persona. La madurez no está dada por el número de años que
hayamos vivido, sino por cómo utilizamos la experiencia acumulada en estos
años. Hoy en día, incluso la posibilidad de que las mujeres sean madres a una
edad más avanzada permite opciones que hace años parecían casi imposibles.
Las posibilidades de éxito de toda pareja se basan en el amor, el respeto, la
afinidad, los proyectos compartidos, y no en lo que un simple documento de
identidad puede indicar en: “fecha de nacimiento”. Siempre y cuando exista
amor entre dos personas, la edad no tiene porque ser un obstáculo entre ellas.
Se dice que el amor siempre sobrepasa cualquier obstáculo, pero siempre hay
que tener en cuenta que por más amor que exista hay que analizar las cosas
cautelosamente antes de dar un gran paso, y más cuando este podría marcar la

I admit, when my editor sent me
out to cover this assignment, I read
the address 2432 South Presa with
Krazy Vatos Emporium circled
in red—I immediately thought I
should have brought a pocket knife,
borrowed my girlfriends mace—or
something.
I also found it unusual that the
word ‘emporium’ was used in the
same sentence as crazy (with a k),
and vatos. Yet, I had no choice but
to set out (unarmed) to the Southside
of downtown.
It was late, dark out and my unfamiliarity
with the area had me
concerned. The directions I Googled
took me through the heart of downtown
San Antonio, and when I made
my turn onto S. Presa all I saw was
darkness ahead.
While cruising down S. Presa, I
notice a couple of interesting places
like Taco Haven, an Asian-inspired
shop called Bubblehead, and the first
triple-railroad crossing, which I never
knew existed but nonetheless unique.
Although I had my directions
printed out, I still managed to pass
K is for Krazy, on the Southside
the place twice and get lost. After my
third u-turn, I finally caught a glimpse
of the Krazy Vatos Emporium dimly,
moon-lit sign. I parked on the side
street and walked to the corner of
Berkshire and S. Presa.
As I made my way toward the
entrance, I see a life-size blue M&M
and was greeted by “What’s up
brother” from a raspy voice in the
shadows. I thought to myself, greeter
or friendly bum? Either way he posed
no threat, and I was prepared use my
yellow belt karate skills.
Finally, I made my entrance and
immediately felt I’d stepped into a
Mecca of all things Chicano.
The counter was filled with coin
purses, pillows and bags in the shape
of pan dulce, art from various local
artists and anything from shoes to
belts.
The back wall was constructed
of antique doors and stained glass
covered with photos of owners Jesse
Borrego and Danny De La Paz with
fans and friends. Along the other
walls was art representing the Chicano
culture, silk screen shirts (with
a Chicano twist like their Darth Vader
shirt that says “Soy tu padre mijo”)
and hoodies.
After taking it all in, I notice a man

behind the counter decked out in Chicano
attire straight from the movies
with full sleeves of tattoos. At first I
thought he was robbing the place, but
turns out it was owner Danny De La
Paz, star of “American Me.”
De La Paz, a recent Los Angeles
transplant and native San Antionian,
Jesse Borrego are owners of the
Krazy Vatos Emporium located at
2432 S. Presa.
Borrego and De La Paz want to
give local Chicano artists another
platform to have their work seen by
a larger audience. Both men have
a passion for the arts and Chicano
culture recognize the need for an
outlet to expose the rich Mexican-

Casa Navarro celebró la tercera
Tamalada anual, el pasado miércoles,
en las instalaciones del sitio
histórico estatal. La recepción fue
disfrutada por más cien miembros
de la comunidad. La comida
que ofrecieron los anfitriones fue
donada por Mi Tierra y Chaparral,
restaurantes de la localidad.
La tamalada se realizó para
celebrar a José Antonio Navarro,
quien jugó un papel muy importante
dentro de la comunidad tejana,
a principios del siglo XIX. Navarro
fue un ganadero y comerciante, y
gran defensor de los derechos de
American culture.
“There is so much creativity in this
town,” said De La Paz. “San Antonio
is like a big creative pimple that’s
going to pop.”
“It’s unbelievable the talent that
walks in these doors and shows me
their work,” he added.
Not only serving as a platform
for local artists work, Krazy Vatos
Emporium often hosts intimate book
releases, film showings and musical
acts.
The emporium is venue to local
and prominent writer, Gregg Barrios
who held the launch for his new
book “La Causa” earlier this month.
Jesus Trevino, director of the movie
“Seguin,” had a special screening in
the Krazy Vatos Emporium backyard
and most recently a performance
by harpist and one of the original
founding members of Los Lobos,
Francisco González.
Not located in the most cultural
relevant part of town the Krazy
Vatos Emporium is laying a solid
framework for an area ready to burst.
It provides San Antonio with yet
another unique shop that adds to the
rich and diverse culture offered in the
Alamo City.
Store hours are Monday through
Friday 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Saturdays 12
p.m. to 6 p.m. and closed on Sundays.

Los asistentes al evento pudieron
disfrutar de tamales y comida típica
mexicana. También tuvieron la
oportunidad de participar en la rifa
del libro “José Antonio Navarro:
In Search of America Dream in
Nineteenth-Century Texas”, el
cual estuvo autografiando su autor,
David McDonald.
José Antonio Navarro destaca
por haber sido el único tejano que
firmó la declaración de la independencia
en Texas en 1836. Navarro,
al igual que su tío, Francisco Ruiz,
fueron líderes en dicho acontecimiento.

Holiday lighting event
brings joy to residents

The Avenida Guadalupe Association
celebrated its 2nd Annual
Neighborhood Holiday Lighting
event Friday night.
The event was coordinated with
the intent to bring neighbors and
families together to jump start the
holiday season.
Families had the opportunity
to photograph with Santa, free of
charge. In addition, further entertainment
was provided via games,
crafts and live music.
Creative activities that encouraged
participation were available
to children including the creation
of Christmas tree ornaments and
the writing of letter to Santa and
the troops.
Children also benefited from a
live artist who painted a Christmas
scene as they enjoyed traditional
buñuelos and hot chocolate.

repartieron”, dijo Sarah Salinas,
descendiente de Navarro.
El edificio de Casa Navarro
fue la residencia de José Antonio
Navarro (1795-1871). Hoy en día,
los visitantes pueden recorrer el
inmueble, el cual está decorado
con artículos de la época, así como
también cuenta con copias de escritos
antiguos. Casa Navarro cuenta
con un programa de becas que
apoya la educación de estudiantes
de preparatoria.
