REACTIVATING A
MISSIONARY NATION
Gideon's army were crazy. 300 against the Midianite hordes - utterly bonkers.
Stand on the top of a hill with a torch, clay jar and a trumpet - obviously deranged.
How can the Lord be reactivating a missionary nation when the odds are so clearly
stacked against us. When the church is in such massive decline? When the society
is rapidly abandoning our Christian heritage? When all the indications are that the
church in Scotland is to shut up shop and give up? The answer is that in this time
the Lord God Almighty is raising up a new Gideon's army. Those who have the
eyes of faith; those who have courage and passion for the Lord; those who are
willing to launch out into impossible ventures because our God is a God who
does impossible things.
It is time for a new army like Gideon's to arise again in Scotland. Our hope and
prayer is that this conference will become a rallying point for such a group. We
pray that this time together will be catalytic for you as you imagine a future
transformed by our amazing God!
Programme
Information
As well as our main sessions and seminars we have several opportunities in our
programme for you:
• Consultations are aimed at both people who have ideas, but have not started yet, and
also for people who are already leading church plants or missional projects. So if you
have questions that you would like to run past someone, make an appointment at the
Forge Table. The consultation team comprises of the Forge Scotland team and a pool
of experienced missional pioneers and church planters.
• Table Conversations are a chance to tease out the "Who, what, how, why and when?"
with the team, the speakers and other delegates – we're all in this together. Using the
questions sent in, as well as new questions, this has the potential to be a hugely
dynamic and fruitful time.
• Forge Taster Event is for those of you asking "what next"? Would you like to keep
connected and learning alongside other missional pioneers? Are you interested in
getting a fuller picture of what Forge Scotland is about? Come and hang out with the
team over dinner, hear stories, make connections and find out more about Forge and
all it does. There are 25 places available - sign up for at the Forge table at the
conference.
Jesus Loves Everyone - Gay or
Straight
(Friday | 11.30 | Church)
Debra is a speaker, church leader, and author (with Alan Hirsch) of Untamed: Reactivating a Missional
Form of Discipleship. She is publishing a new book on sexuality this year. She currently serves as a
minister of ‘Tribe of LA’, a community made up primarily of struggling artists and vagabonds. She was
also a leader of Christian Associates (a church planting movement). Debra has a heart for those on the
margins of the church and broader society.
Over the last few years Debra has spent a lot of time amongst the LGBT community of Los Angeles,
leading the LA Tribe (A church within the LGBT / Arts community). During this time she has taken time to
reflect on a theology and practice of engagement with this community. In this session Debra will share
her thoughts on these issues, providing an overview.
Winsome Jesus - Evangelism in
Marginalised Cultures
(Saturday | 2pm | Garnethill)
Debra will lead a session for mission practitioners following on from Friday's seminar on this issue of
reaching people in the LGBT community. This will be more focused on "how to" rather than the
underpinning rationale.
APEST Leadership
(Saturday | 9.30 | Church)
The Shaping of Things to come
(Seminar with Norman Graham |
Saturday | 2pm | Church)
Alan is the founding director of Forge Mission Training Network. Currently he co-leads Future Travelers, a
program helping megachurches become missional movements. The author of several books, Alan
lectures internationally and is an adjunct professor at several seminaries in the US. His experience
includes leading a local church movement among the marginalized, developing training systems for
missional leadership.
Paul wrote about the need for apostolic, prophetic, evangelistic, shepherd(pastoral) and teaching
leaders within the church. Teaching some of his most significant material Alan explains why we need
once more to discover the five fold nature of leadership once again and how it is particularly essential in
the context we find ourselves in today.
In 2003, Alan wrote a book along with his co-conspirator Michael Frost (you may have heard of it). He will
outline the main ideas in this seminar, and Norman Graham, Minister of Denny Baptist Church, will share
how he has sought to implement these ideas within his church and what difference it has made.

Norman is married and has three adult children. He worked in Scripture Union’s Bookshop ministry for
17 years, leaving to study at ICC and has been the pastor of Denny Baptist since 2005. Norman will be
leading The Shaping of Things to come seminar with Alan Hirsch | Saturday | 2pm | Church (see previous
page)
Scott is the team leader of Lighthouse Church, with connections in Edinburgh and East Lothian, Bavaria
and rural Ghana. Scott is passionate about the gospel being communicated in a culturally relevant way.
He has a vision to see the Church in Scotland work strategically and collaboratively.
Lessons learned along the way is a session based on "how to navigate the stills and storms of the
missional journey." We will look at Sticking with God's vision for mission despite limited knowledge and
having not been there before, developing a spiritual anchor to ride out the storms, growing a robust
team to go with you, what to do when it's looks like the wind has stilled and enjoying the thrill of the
waves
Much has been written recently about reaching millennials. What does church for this generation look
like and how does it relate to the all age church? Ken Wilson and Scott Brennan share the highs, lows,
opportunities, challenges and privileges of engaging with young people.
Ken has youth work experience working in urban, rural and suburban settings. He is passionate about
advancing Christian Youth Work and is known for his pioneering of Relational Youth Work and for cofounding
of Britain’s first professional youth ministry training course : Oxford Youth Works. Ken also helps
to organise national events such as Deep Impact, the National Christian Youthwork Conference.
Barbara directs Light & Life (an evangelistic organisation), and is currently involved in planting a new
church (River Fellowship) in Troon, along with her husband, Colin. A passionate evangelist, prophet and
worship leader, Barbara has a strong teaching anointing which she combines with her ‘off the wall’ sense
of humour.
Ken will be leading the Youth Focus seminar with Scott Brennan | Saturday | 2pm | Chapel
Often the opportunities today for people to connect with Jesus come from their openness to spiritual
experience. Barbara Jenkinson brings a wealth of expertise in engaging with spiritual seekers from her
work developing Light and Life and shares stories and lessons from church planting form that place.

Helen Brough
Seminar speaker
Mark Stirling
Seminar speaker
When we are aware of the missional opportunities and challenge before us but also of many church
communities struggling to engage effectively, we are faced with questions of how to see change and
transition. Come hear a story of how a traditional church was enabled to transition to one which is fully
engaged in its community.
Helen is on the Forge Scotland leadership team and is based in Dundee where she is developing Lattice
– a missional networked community reaching women on the margins. Helen has also been facilitating a
network of missional pioneers and church planters from those who've completed the Invest Course.
Mark Stirling leads Cornerstone St Andrews, a new church committed to equipping God's people to live
and speak the Good News in every sphere of life. Mark also works with the Navigators and leads the
European Leadership Forum Disciple-making Leaders Network.
Discipleship
(Helen Brough & Mark Stirling|
Saturday | 9.30am | Kirk Lounge)
"Go and make disciples" is a verse we are familiar with, but we as the church struggle to do effectively.
Mark Stirling and Helen Brough help us to reflect on the theology and practice of making disciples in the
21st century.
Shona Stirling
Seminar speaker
Shona works at Whiteinch Church. Before Shona worked for 3 years in Newmains developing a fresh
(Helen Brough & Shona Stirling|
Friday | 2pm | Blythswood)
What does discipleship look like with those on the margins of society, whose lives are so full of potential
but as yet blighted by circumstance, illness and wounds from the past? Helen Brough and Shona Stirling
share principles and practice from living alongside, working with and learning from those on the
margins.

Seminar speaker
Living missionally isn't just about church planting. We are called to be salt and light in every area of
society bring the seasoning of heaven and the light of Christ wherever we are. How can we see more
and more people released into doing this as local churches? From the world of politics and local
government John & Shaw bring a wealth of experience, wisdom and encouragement.
Following ten years in Japan, David now lectures in Mission at ICC, preparing people for overseas
mission and seeking to equip British Christians for the cross-cultural challenges of reaching a post-
Christian society. He is also lay pastor at Millerston United Free Church.
Having studied Theology at ICC and Glasgow University between 1992-1997 Jacky went on to work for
Ruchill Church Youth and Family Outreach Project , initially as their Youth & Family Worker and then as
Adult Outreach Worker, focussing on contextualising the gospel in the urban context.
Many of the models we have for discipleship assume a level of literacy and style of learning that
excludes many within our communities. Gleaning from other oral cultures and from lessons learned from
years of practice, David Miller and Jacky Close will share both theory and stories to encourage and
inspire.
Alan is on the Forge Scotland team and is also the primary leader within the leadership of Whiteinch
Church of Scotland with overall responsibility for vision, strategy and teaching. He is also involved in
Clan Gathering, the Light Project and the Presbytery of Glasgow!

churches in Belfast. Church planting: South of Spain and the East End of Greenock, with nondenominational
organisations: UCCF and Evangelical Alliance. Part-time teaching in Belfast Bible
College. Just started as Fresh Expressions Development Worker with the Church of Scotland.
The greatest key to growth under the Holy Spirit is leadership training. Only when we see people
equipped, enabled and released to lead effectively in mission will we see the explosive multiplication of
new patterns of outreach. Alan, David and Richard have been involved in training missionary leaders for
hundreds of years. Come along and find out what is currently available in this area.
After ten years leading the development of Hot Chocolate Trust, and a brief sojourn as a senior manager
in a large third sector organisation, Alison Urie recently set up Vox Liminis; the latest installment of a
career predicated on a commitment to using creativity for justice.
McWilliam share stories from tough places and surprising opportunity.
