6 June 2010 Meeting Report SME Annual Meeting Draws Nearly 5,000 Several Thousand Professionals Listen to Opening Session Bruce Watzman, Jeff Kohler, Steve Leer, Gary Goldberg, Michael Hood, Raja V. Ramani Jergen Brune John Murphy David Kanagy Nikhil Trivedi The 2010 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit, held in Phoenix, Arizona, and Celebrating 100 Years of Mining Research drew an attendance of 4,937. The meeting began with the SME Keynote Session titled Extracting the Science: A Century of Mining Research presenting leaders in all areas that contribute to the scientific body of knowledge in mining: industry, academia, and government. The speakers offered a historical perspective with an eye toward a future that is both safer and healthier, while also productive and sustainable. The session was moderated by Bruce Watzman, Senior VP for Regulatory Affairs, National Mining Association. Speakers were: Jeffery Kohler, Associate Director of Mining, NIOSH; Steven F. Leer, Chairman and CEO, Arch Coal Inc.; Gary Goldberg, President and CEO, Rio Tinto Minerals; Michael Hood, CEO, CRC Mining; and Raja V. Ramani, Emeritus Professor of Mining and GeoEnv Enginering, Penn State University. At the meeting, there were 102 sessions comprising 436 presentations. There were four short courses and three field trips. There were fifteen alumni and special functions. The Coal and Energy Division had fifteen technical sessions, plus the Coal and Energy Division Luncheon comprising Silent Auction, and Business Meeting. The Coal and Energy Division Chair was Jurgen Brune and Division Program Chair was Joseph Zelanko, Rosebud Mining Co. The Exhibit Hall at the Phoenix Convention Center North opened with the Opening Reception on the Sunday evening and was open two full days on the Monday and Tuesday, as well as Wednesday morning. Sponsored by SME, there was a Recruitment Pavilion offering mining companies an opportunity to interview and recruit grad students, as well as exhibit their products and services. There was also an International Pavilion showcasing exhibitors from around the world. SME and the SME Foundation had a special booth to assist in the always popular SME Cyber Café, offering free internet access. There was a total number of 630 Booths. At the AIME/SME Dinner, 2010 SME President William H. Wilkinson handed over to the new President Nikhil C. Trivedi. The President-Elect is John N. June 2010 7 Drager SCBA Mining Escape System K Armstrong, Sales Manager Mining – Canada, U.S., and Mexico, Draeger Safety Inc., gave a presentation to the SME Annual Meeting entitled Drager SCBA Mining Escape System. Drager has a rich history in mining. The SCBA Mine Egress System was first used in mining in the late 1960’s and 1970’s by mine rescue underground cage tenders and underground hoistmen called the stand and fill/wear and fill. With NIOSH approval in the late 80’s of the Airoquip Quick Connect stand fill/wear, fill was taken out of service. In the mid-90’s, underground mine rescue teams and companies switched to the Quick Fill for cage tender and hoistmen. In the late 90’s, mines purchased the Quick Fill system to do post-blast examination by ventilation teams. The MINER Act 2006 requires expansion of mine emergency plan increasing requirements for SCSRs in the USA coal market. Draeger Australia in the late 1990’s worked on the design of the Mine Emergency Escape system for coal mines in Australia. The application was for escape and underground firefighting teams. The SCBA has a number of features. No changeout is required during escape and the units can be refilled quickly and safely. It is a positive pressure unit with low breathing resistance. Verbal communication is the key. There is a pressure gauge for displaying remaining air and the units are maintainable rather than disposable. A comparison of the SCBA vs. the SCSR follows. The SCSR is NIOSHapproved with escape from IDLH atmosphere only. The SCBA is NIOSHapproved for both escape and entry into IDLH atmosphere. It is NIOSHtested at 40 LPM for 60-minute duration. The SCSR has difficulty in exchanging to a new unit. The SCBA units are not exchanged during egress. The units are recharged while still worn by the user. When training is completed, clean the unit and refill the cylinders. With the SCSR goggles, vision is restricted. With the SCBA, full-face piece allows for wider range of vision. With the SCSR, the nose clip is uncomfortable to wear and may not provide effective seal. With the SCBA, a full-face piece provides seal around the entire face and allows for a more comfortable fit (see Figure 1). With the SCSR, talking is virtually impossible, and with the SCBA, verbal communication is clear. SCSR units require pre-start system to initiate O2 flow. The SCBA has first breath activation. With the SCSR there is no indication of oxygen consumed. With the SCBA there is a pressure gauge for displaying the remaining air. The SCSR is chest-mounted with possible restriction of movement. With the SCBA, both hands are free and weight is evenly distributed. With the SCSR during escape, the temperature of inhaled air can become hot and uncomfortable. With the SCBA, the air is cooled when expanding from compression and this expansion cools the SCBA and the air to the user. The SCSR has high breathing resistance, while the SCBA is a positive pressure system with a lung demand activation. The SCSR has a service life plan of ten years and the SCBA has a cylinder with a fifteenyear life with hydrotesting every five years. The units are maintainable rather than disposable. The SCBA Mine Escape System has refill stations with forty refills or twenty refills. The refills are based on refilling 60-minute cylinder from 0 psi to 4,500 psi. The SCBA caches are 20 SCBA or 12 SCBA (see Figures 2 and 3). The 20 SCBA cache has two drawers of 8 SCBAs and one wall of 4 SCBAs. The 12 SCBA cache has two drawers of 6 SCBAs. The unit can be transported by forklift or scoop and lifted or pulled into place. There are no electric components and there is a simple threestep SCBA refill procedure. The 40 refill station contains 8,144 cubic feet breathing air with refill connections for ten persons. The 20 refill station contains 4,072 cubic feet of breathing air with refill connections for five persons. The 20 refill station has 27 cylinders from 0-4,500 psi and 30 cylinders from 2,200-4,500 psi. The 40 refill station has 54 cylinders from 0-4,500 psi and 63 cylinders from 2,200-4,500 psi (see Figure 4). The 20 refill station has 32 man-hours available after 27 SCBAs have been refilled, that is one person at 32 hours and two persons at 16 hours. The 20 refill is 80 inches long by 60 inches wide by 40 inches high and weighs 4,500 pounds. The 40 refill station has 62 man-hours available after 54 SCBAs have been refilled; that is one person at 62 hours and two persons at 31 hours. Its dimensions are ten feet long by five feet wide by forty inches high and weighs 8,500 pounds. Refill systems filling procedure is a three-step system. Step 1: open refill station door; Step 2: open the fill valve; Step 3: connect the refill line to the SCBA. The SCBA Mine Escape System meets and exceeds current NIOSH SCSR standards. The District Manager must approve the Emergency Escape Plan. The system is 100% pneumatic operation and there are no electronic parts for MSHA approval. A breathing air compressor is required support equipment (see Figure 5). This has an output pressure of 6,000 psi and produces CGA Grade D breathing air. The booster pump is shown in Figure 6,. The breathing air is 6,000 psi and it is recommended that this is air driven with a PTO driven screw compressor and dedicated storage bank. A Class II fill station is required for refilling the SCBAs after training/service. This is NFPA and OSHA.
