“Heirloom Clone” and “Dijon
Clone” Chardonnays;
Montreaux, a Brut sparkling
wine of Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay; and the sweet
Chateau M, a naturally
botrytised blend of Semillon and
Sauvignon Blanc.
In the low-key, relaxed tasting
room, guests have a choice of
current or reserve releases, but
another standout is downstairs
in the cellar of the Jefferson
House, tasting in The Library or
The Reserve Room. Also, visitors
to Monticello often get a chance
to do some “barrel tasting on the
fly,” during weekends, and there
is an extensive list of library
wines available for purchase, too.
The winery never disappoints in
special events, either, and they
should go on your “Must-Do” list
for this summer. For those
seeking a wine-based July 4th,
the winery presents the
Independence Day Wine and
Dessert Pairing, and September
15th brings something truly
unique, a Jeffersonian Dinner,
the next in the winery’s “Heritage
Meals” series, matching wines to
dishes of the Founders’ period;
the varieties, the preparation
techniques and the recipes will
all be from writings by Jefferson,
his family and household, or his
contemporaries.
As you can see, the Corley
family has put a lot of time and
thought into the design and
function of the winery, and the
principles they’ve been guided
by have a proven track record of
success, not just in growing great
wines but in growing good
things in general: focus on
keeping the land wellmaintained
and productive,
respect its products and make
great things from them, and
provide people the opportunity
to enjoy them without pressure
