is administered by Share the Road Cycling
Coalition. The program provides incentives,
hands-on assistance, and award recognition
for communities that actively support
cycling, and show strong commitments in the areas of
Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement,
Evaluation & Planning (the “5 Es”).
Bicycle Friendly Community
A municipality’s transportation network is an important part of the livability of a community.
The Town of Ajax’s progressive transportation program is creating a safe, integrated multimodal
system, including walking, cycling and the use of public transit. The Town is proud
to be one of the first Bicycle Friendly Communities in Ontario. As a leader and proponent of
a strong, diverse transportation system, the Town recognized early on the importance of on
and off road connections to make cycling an accessible and safe option for getting around
town. Significant investments are being made to expand Ajax’s 120km cycling network of
trails, dedicated bike lanes, and shared use lanes.
To better serve cyclists, the Town has installed bike shelters at municipal facilities and
signage throughout the Town. Across Ajax, a growing number of cyclist friendly businesses
are offering extra services and amenities for those travelling by bike. Just look for the
Welcome Cyclists symbol in the windows of local establishments.
With a safe and integrated trail network connecting to transit
and rail hubs, cycling amenities and support from local
businesses, there has never been a better time
to experience cycling in Ajax!
between motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

Our Cycling Network
Bike Lanes
Bike lanes are 1.5m on-road lanes dedicated to cyclists, and cannot be used by cars, motorcycles
or pedestrians. Parking is generally prohibited in bike lanes, however motorists can cross a bike
lane when moving into a turn lane or entering a driveway.
Shared Use Lanes
Marked by sharrows (bicycle and chevron) painted on Town streets, a shared use lane is where
cyclists and motorists share the road. Sharrows also indicate bike routes, discourage cyclists from
riding against traffic, and show the desired location for a cyclist to ride. Sharrows are a reminder
that all users have a right to be on the road, and don’t compromise a resident’s ability to park on
the street.
Infrastructure
Recreational Trails
Experience the Town’s extensive trail system, from the Waterfront Trail that hugs Lake Ontario to
the Millers Creek Trail that meanders through naturalized areas. The trails feature picturesque
landscapes, multiple entry points, close proximity to Town facilities and washrooms, and can be
used for any form of non-motorized travel.
Cycling Amenities
In addition to bike racks at all municipal facilities
and popular public spaces, new bicycle shelters
have been installed at the Ajax Town Hall Complex
(65 Harwood Ave. S), Ajax Community Centre
(75 Centennial Rd.) and the McLean Community
Centre (95 Magill Dr.). The new shelters provide
protected and secure parking for bicycles. Also
many businesses support cycling throughout
the Town, see Welcome Cyclists tab for
more information.

Bike Route Signs
In an effort to reduce the number of signs installed along a roadway, the
Town has adopted a unique bike route signage program. The program
incorporates bike route signage into street name signs. The blue signs
contrast with the traditional green street name signs to visibly and
predictably mark the bike route. The yellow diamond share the road signs
are a reminder that all users have a right to be on the road.
Signalling
Always signal your intent by pointing in the direction you wish to travel, or
by using the following hand signals:
“Bike This Way” Pilot Project
The “Bike This Way” initiative is a wayfinding pilot project designed to help cyclists navigate between Downtown Ajax
and the Ajax GO Station.
Project goals:
• Through signage, Fairall Street, Dowty Road, Station Street, Hunt Street and Monarch Avenue will be utilized
as an alternative route to Westney Road and Bayly Street, and will encourage greater use of the bicycle route
between Downtown Ajax and the Ajax GO Station.
• Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and traffic congestion at the Ajax GO Station.
• Improve the visibility of the cycling network and educate drivers to share the road with cyclists.
