competencies, and provid<strong>in</strong>g workplace learn<strong>in</strong>g experiences such as<br />

job shadow<strong>in</strong>g opportunities, <strong>in</strong>ternships and cooperative education<br />

work experience credits.<br />

The comprehensive Tech Prep program of study and job preparation<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Junior year of a Consortium-member high school and<br />

may cont<strong>in</strong>ue through <strong>the</strong> Associate Degree <strong>in</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess or a related<br />

field at <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong>. The Consortium plans to extend Tech Prep<br />

<strong>in</strong>to o<strong>the</strong>r career areas based on its experience with Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

Comput<strong>in</strong>g. Bann<strong>in</strong>g High School, Narbonne High School, Carson<br />

High School, Gardena High School, San Pedro High School and <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Harbor</strong> Occupational Center are members of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

Transfer Services Center<br />

The Transfer Services Center is designed to provide prospective<br />

transfer students with catalogs, applications, and <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

about transfer to four-year universities. The Transfer Services<br />

Center regularly schedules appo<strong>in</strong>tments with representatives from<br />

four-year colleges so that students may obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation about<br />

admission requirements, application procedures, and academic<br />

programs. Call (310) 233-4282 for more <strong>in</strong>formation. The Transfer<br />

Center is located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student Services Center (SSA 103).<br />

Tutorial Services<br />

Student Programs and Services (Disabled Student Programs and<br />

Services) - This office provides tutorial and o<strong>the</strong>r learn<strong>in</strong>g assistance,<br />

as needed, to students <strong>in</strong> this program.<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g Assistance Center - Individual and study group tutor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is available <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Learn<strong>in</strong>g Assistance Center. All students with<br />

an identified learn<strong>in</strong>g need, based on a referral from a counselor<br />

or <strong>in</strong>structor, are eligible for tutor<strong>in</strong>g services by appo<strong>in</strong>tment <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> LAC. Additional “drop-<strong>in</strong>” tutor<strong>in</strong>g is also available <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Math<br />

Lab and English/Writ<strong>in</strong>g Center which are housed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Assistance Center. All students receiv<strong>in</strong>g tutor<strong>in</strong>g who are not<br />

enrolled <strong>in</strong> a lab class will be enrolled <strong>in</strong> a non-credit, zero-unit<br />

course, Supervised Learn<strong>in</strong>g Assistance – Tutor 001T. There are no<br />

enrollment fees or grades <strong>in</strong>volved with this course.<br />

Veterans Affairs Office - Tutor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> all subjects is available to eligible<br />

veterans. Costs are paid by <strong>the</strong> Veterans Adm<strong>in</strong>istration.<br />

Veterans’ Services<br />

Students plann<strong>in</strong>g to attend <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong> under one<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Veterans Educational Benefits programs must report to <strong>the</strong><br />

Veterans Office, located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student Services & Adm<strong>in</strong>istration<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g (SSA 114) with <strong>the</strong> F<strong>in</strong>ancial Aid Office, to pick up <strong>the</strong><br />

necessary paperwork. This should be done at least one month prior<br />

to registration. After pick<strong>in</strong>g up paperwork, students will be required<br />

to make an appo<strong>in</strong>tment with an educational counselor to complete<br />

an educational plan. The student must submit a transcript for all<br />

previous college work before start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> second semester at LAHC.<br />

The Veterans Center is located <strong>in</strong> LRC 125 and provides a quiet<br />

study space, computer and pr<strong>in</strong>ter access and <strong>the</strong> company of o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

veteran students. The Admissions & Records Office must be <strong>in</strong>formed<br />

you are a veteran to grant priority registration.<br />

Welcome Center<br />

The Welcome Center at <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong> is a testimonial<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutional support <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong> provides for new and<br />

return<strong>in</strong>g students. The Center is primarily a one-stop shopp<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

for new students to beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> matriculation process, plus support<br />

for <strong>the</strong> freshman year. The Welcome Center is an <strong>in</strong>vestment toward<br />

student success and retention and is geared to engage students <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> educational process. Outreach, academic, and support services<br />

are provided to assist students from application to graduation. We<br />

are located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student Services & Adm<strong>in</strong>istration Build<strong>in</strong>g, Room<br />

113 (SSA 113) and can be reached at (310) 233-4327, or by email<br />

at welcome@lahc.edu.<br />

FINANCIAL AID<br />

The mission of student f<strong>in</strong>ancial aid is to provide access to postsecondary<br />

education to those <strong>in</strong>dividuals who o<strong>the</strong>rwise could not<br />

afford it. Through grants, scholarships, part-time employment and<br />

loans <strong>the</strong> college provides monetary assistance to students <strong>in</strong> order<br />

to help <strong>the</strong>m meet <strong>the</strong> basic cost of <strong>the</strong>ir education. The amount<br />

and type of aid offered to each student is determ<strong>in</strong>ed by federal<br />

and state regulation and by college policy. The premise for <strong>the</strong><br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ation of <strong>the</strong> type and amount of aid awarded is <strong>the</strong> belief<br />

that <strong>the</strong> primary responsibility of f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g an education lies with<br />

<strong>the</strong> student and <strong>the</strong>ir family.<br />

Student f<strong>in</strong>ancial assistance is not a supplement to <strong>the</strong> student’s<br />

<strong>in</strong>come for meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir normal liv<strong>in</strong>g expenses, but is available<br />

to help <strong>the</strong> student offset <strong>the</strong> additional expenses <strong>in</strong>curred<br />

directly by <strong>the</strong>ir education. Most f<strong>in</strong>ancial aid awards are based on<br />

demonstrated f<strong>in</strong>ancial need, which is <strong>the</strong> difference between <strong>the</strong><br />

cost of attendance and <strong>the</strong> expected family contribution. Parents’<br />

or student’s contribution is determ<strong>in</strong>ed from <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

reported on <strong>the</strong> FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).<br />

Documentation of <strong>in</strong>come such as a Federal Income Tax Return or<br />

verification from agencies provid<strong>in</strong>g non-taxable <strong>in</strong>come to <strong>the</strong> family<br />

may be required. To be considered for f<strong>in</strong>ancial aid, a student must<br />

meet <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>imum requirements:<br />

• Be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen. An eligible<br />

non-citizen is a U.S. permanent resident who has<br />

documentation from <strong>the</strong> Immigration and Naturalization<br />

Service verify<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>ir stay <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S. is for o<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

a temporary purpose.<br />

• Show that <strong>the</strong>y have f<strong>in</strong>ancial need.<br />

• Be mak<strong>in</strong>g satisfactory progress <strong>in</strong> a course of study<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g to an AA or AS degree, certificate, or transfer to a<br />

baccalaureate degree program.<br />

• Not be <strong>in</strong> default on a Perk<strong>in</strong>s Loan (formerly National<br />

Direct Student Loan), Stafford Loan (formerly Guaranteed<br />

Student Loan), or Supplemental Loan for Students (SLS)<br />

or Parents Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) at any<br />

school <strong>the</strong> student attended.<br />

• Must not owe a refund on a Pell Grant, Supplemental<br />
