HISTORY<br />

In 1941 <strong>the</strong> Education Committee of <strong>the</strong> Wilm<strong>in</strong>gton Chamber of<br />

Commerce petitioned <strong>the</strong> <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> City Board of Education to<br />

establish trade extension classes at Bann<strong>in</strong>g High School to meet<br />

critical, war-<strong>in</strong>spired tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g needs.<br />

Realiz<strong>in</strong>g that such trade extension classes would not be a longrange<br />

answer to <strong>the</strong> educational needs of <strong>the</strong> area, <strong>the</strong> Education<br />

Committee (expanded <strong>in</strong> 1945 to <strong>in</strong>clude representatives from<br />

San Pedro and Lomita) called a meet<strong>in</strong>g of representatives of key<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustries located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> Area to discuss <strong>the</strong> need for ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

a trade or technical school.<br />

After surveys of projected population, property valuation, and<br />

employment possibilities, <strong>the</strong>se community leaders <strong>in</strong>dicated a need<br />

for such a post-high school <strong>in</strong>stitution, and <strong>the</strong> Education Committee<br />

<strong>the</strong>n petitioned <strong>the</strong> <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> City Board of Education to provide<br />

such a school <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area.<br />

<strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong> officially opened <strong>in</strong> September 1949.<br />
