advanced course <strong>in</strong> this discipl<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Prerequisites (if any) for course are complete<br />

Limitation on Petition<strong>in</strong>g for Exam<strong>in</strong>ation: The maximum number of<br />

units for which a student may petition for credit by exam<strong>in</strong>ation for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Associate degree at <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong> shall be 15 units.<br />

Maximum Units Allowable: The maximum number of credit by<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ation units with a grade of “P” that may be applied toward<br />

graduation requirements shall be limited to 15 units.<br />

Acceptance Towards Residence: Units for which credit is given<br />

pursuant to <strong>the</strong> provision of this section shall not be counted <strong>in</strong><br />

determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 12 units of credit <strong>in</strong> residence requirement.<br />

Record<strong>in</strong>g of Grade: Credit by exam<strong>in</strong>ation shall be entered on <strong>the</strong><br />

student’s record as “P” or “NP” (or “CR” or “NC” prior to June 30,<br />

2007) as provided by <strong>the</strong> District Grad<strong>in</strong>g Symbols and def<strong>in</strong>itions<br />

Policy. The student’s record shall also be annotated “Credit by<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>ation”.<br />

The college grants credit by exam<strong>in</strong>ation to students who can<br />

demonstrate mastery of specific subject matters. The purpose is<br />

to avoid needless repetition and to allow appropriate credit for<br />

knowledge not acquired <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> classroom. Credit by exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

may be recognized <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g ways:<br />

1. Advanced Placement: Credit for AP tests may be made by<br />

each department on a petition basis. Each student should<br />

also check AP credits given by <strong>the</strong> university to which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

want to transfer as this differs from campus to campus.<br />

Consult a counselor for procedures at <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong> and<br />

policies of universities.<br />

2. <strong>College</strong>-Adm<strong>in</strong>istered Exam<strong>in</strong>ation: Satisfactory completion<br />

of an exam<strong>in</strong>ation adm<strong>in</strong>istered by <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong> accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> district policy stated above. Achievement based<br />

on exam<strong>in</strong>ations adm<strong>in</strong>istered by o<strong>the</strong>r agencies must<br />

be approved by <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong>. The charge for collegeadm<strong>in</strong>istered<br />

credit by exam is $20 per unit, subject to<br />

change by <strong>the</strong> state legislature or <strong>the</strong> LACCD Board of<br />

Trustees.<br />

3. CLEP: After complet<strong>in</strong>g 12 units at <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong>, a<br />

registered student <strong>in</strong> good academic stand<strong>in</strong>g (not on<br />

probation) may petition for <strong>College</strong> Level Exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

Program credit. The student must file a General Petition <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Admissions Office. <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong> will grant 3 elective<br />

units for each of <strong>the</strong> five General Exam<strong>in</strong>ations passed with<br />

a score of 500 or higher. No specific course credit is granted<br />

for CLEP, and it cannot be used to fulfill General Education<br />

requirements, except by General Petition.<br />

The student may be granted a maximum of 15 units of credit,<br />

with a three-unit maximum <strong>in</strong> each of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g areas: English<br />

Composition; Social Science/History (this credit will not satisfy <strong>the</strong><br />

general education requirement <strong>in</strong> American Institutions); Natural<br />

Sciences, not <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a laboratory requirement; Ma<strong>the</strong>matics;<br />

and Humanities.<br />

Students may not receive credit by enrollment <strong>in</strong> or by exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

for <strong>the</strong> prerequisite(s) to an advanced course if <strong>the</strong>y have completed<br />

<strong>the</strong> advanced course.<br />

Students who qualify under (a), (b), and (c) above must present<br />

evidence to <strong>the</strong> division chairman of hav<strong>in</strong>g received equivalent<br />

education or experience <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r than traditional educational sett<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The Credit by Exam<strong>in</strong>ation option is not available for laboratory<br />

classes.<br />

Credit for Courses Completed at Non-Accredited<br />

Institutions<br />

Students transferr<strong>in</strong>g from non-accredited <strong>in</strong>stitutions may, after<br />

successful completion of 30 units with a “C” or better grade-po<strong>in</strong>taverage,<br />

apply for up to 15 units of credit <strong>in</strong> <strong>courses</strong> which parallel<br />

<strong>the</strong> offer<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

Students who wish to apply for credit at <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong> for course<br />

work completed at non-accredited <strong>in</strong>stitutions must request <strong>in</strong><br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> appropriate Division Chairman that he or she evaluate<br />

<strong>the</strong> course work. This evaluation should be done at <strong>the</strong> time of<br />

<strong>the</strong> student’s entry to <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong>, not after completion of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong>’s 30-unit requirement of accredited course work; however,<br />

credit for <strong>the</strong> course work taken at non-accredited <strong>in</strong>stitutions will<br />

not be awarded until <strong>the</strong> 30-unit requirement is completed.<br />

Students are encouraged to consult with a counselor at <strong>the</strong> time<br />

of entry to <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong> to avoid duplication of course work taken<br />

at non-accredited <strong>in</strong>stitutions.<br />

Credit for Graduates of Diploma Schools of<br />

Nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g amount of credit is authorized for graduates of<br />

Diploma Schools of Nurs<strong>in</strong>g who enter <strong>the</strong> <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> Community<br />

<strong>College</strong>s. Thirty (30) semester units of credit will be given to graduates<br />

of Diploma Schools of Nurs<strong>in</strong>g under <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g conditions:<br />

The student presents a valid, current California license as a<br />

licensed registered nurse to <strong>the</strong> designated adm<strong>in</strong>istrative<br />

officer;<br />

The student has completed at least 12 units of credit at<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong> to which application is made.<br />

The work of graduates of Diploma Schools of Nurs<strong>in</strong>g outside<br />

California will be recognized if <strong>the</strong> student has a valid, current<br />

California license. Credit will be given even though <strong>the</strong> license was<br />

obta<strong>in</strong>ed on <strong>the</strong> basis of reciprocity with ano<strong>the</strong>r state ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

by exam<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

Candidates for <strong>the</strong> Associate <strong>in</strong> Arts or Associate <strong>in</strong> Science<br />

Degree are exempt from Health Education as a general education<br />

requirement. No o<strong>the</strong>r general education requirements will be<br />

waived.<br />

Additional <strong>courses</strong> <strong>in</strong> Nurs<strong>in</strong>g may be taken for credit only upon<br />

approval of <strong>the</strong> Nurs<strong>in</strong>g Department. The transcript is not to reflect<br />

<strong>the</strong> major field nor should <strong>the</strong> diploma, where given, <strong>in</strong>dicate Nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

as a major.<br />
