UNIVERSITY CITY – Betty Stone has
lived in Charlotte all of her life.
And she’s never seen anything like
this.
The Brookstone-neighborhood resident,
had a water bill of $57.51 in August
and a $281.19 bill in September – an
This event will be held Feb. 6 at Del
Frisco’s. This is the first wine competition
to be held in Charlotte. It is free
and open to the public and proceeds go
to local nonprofits.
Charlotte Wine & Food Weekend has
raised more than $3.2 million for nonprofits
since 1989. It has grown into
the one of the Southeast’s largest wine
events. This year’s efforts are based on
the theme “Nourishing Mecklenburg
County Youth.” They focus on housing,
feeding, educating, protecting and
influencing children. q
“I didn’t water the lawn or anything,”
she said. She also pointed out that during
the month of the increased bill, for
one week, she was the only one home.
“My daughter and her family, all five of
them, were on vacation for a week (that
month),” she said.
It started when her July bill jumped to
$131.20, more than double her $62 bill
in June. “I questioned in my mind, ‘Why
is this so high?’” she said. When her
August bill came to $57.51, she thought,
“They charged me too much last time,
and it was evening out.”
