Education Morehead gets new name CHARLOTTE – The Charlotte- Mecklenburg Board of Education approved at its Jan. 12 meeting a new name for John M. Morehead Elementary School. Starting with the 2010-11 school year, the new name will be John M. Morehead Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Academy. The school will be informally called Morehead STEM Academy. In November 2008, the Board of Education voted to expand Morehead’s math, science and environmental studies magnet program and convert it to a K-8 program focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Beginning with the 2010-11 school year, Morehead will add one grade each year until it serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The district updated the school’s name to accurately reflect the student population and STEM focus. Student assignment lottery now open CHARLOTTE – The Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools student-assignment lottery application opened Friday, Jan. 8. Families can apply online at www.cms.k12.nc.us/application for magnet programs and for seats in nonmagnet schools with space available. The lottery will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day through Feb. 7. On Feb. 8, the last day of the lottery-application period, the application will close at 10 p.m. New this year, the online application form will be available in both Spanish and English. The system will provide free computer access at the Family Application Center, 700 Marsh Road, and at all learning-community offices. Computers at these locations will be available from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Customer-service representatives are available from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Feb. 8. The phone number is 980-343-5335. Spanish-speaking representatives are also available. The system will offer 11 magnet programs at 40 schools for the 2010-11 school year. Programs include visual and performing arts, language immersion, International Baccalaureate, leadership and global economics and Montessori. All students are taught the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, but magnet programs also promote students’ skills or talents. Celgard’s separators play a critical role in the performance and life of lithiumion battery cells by providing a barrier between the positive and negative electrodes, preventing short circuits while controlling the exchange of lithium ions from one side of the battery to the other. Celgard could receive up to $18.6 million in cash incentives and tax credits from the state to support the company’s expansion. Support from the One North Carolina Fund and the Job Development Investment Grant program helped the company decide to stay local. In August, Celgard was selected for a U.S. Department of Energy grant for the same expansion project.
