Morehead gets new name
CHARLOTTE – The Charlotte-
Mecklenburg Board of Education
approved at its Jan. 12 meeting a new
name for John M. Morehead Elementary
School. Starting with the 2010-11
school year, the new name will be John
M. Morehead Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math Academy. The
school will be informally called Morehead
STEM Academy.
In November 2008, the Board of
Education voted to expand Morehead’s
math, science and environmental studies
magnet program and convert it to
a K-8 program focusing on Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Beginning with the 2010-11
school year, Morehead will add one
grade each year until it serves students
in kindergarten through eighth grade.
The district updated the school’s name
to accurately reflect the student population
and STEM focus.
