Jnr Football Lge Div 2 rnd 3 Fr.O Neills 0:07 v Midleton 0:05
We recorded our second win of this years league campaign with a hard
fought win over Midleton. On a damp day which led to greasy under foot
conditions a low scoring game was always on the cards and so it proved
with the first score coming 9 minutes into the game, both sides were guilty
of some very poor finishing with the half time score of 3pts a piece a fair
reflection of proceedings up to then,a feature of the first half was the tackling
and commitment shown by both teams with no quarter being asked
or given. The 2nd half was to go the same way as the first with both teams
making basic mistakes when in a scoring position which led to possesion
being lost on numerous occasions by both sets of forwards,as the half
went on it was evident to the good size crowd present that the team that
was to avail of a couple of the many scoring chances that were being created
by both sides would win the game, with our lads sensing this it wasn't
long before we got our noses in front and closed out the game with two
late frees,a noteable feature of the game was the fitness levels shown by
both teams and a willingness to work hard when not in possesion of the
football.
Youghal Ladies Rugby
Fermoy V Youghal - February 12th 2012
Youghals lionhearted ladies continue their unbeaten run with a fierce
feat versus Fermoy
Youghals enthusiasm was evident from the off as their lively winger Lucy
Barry got the opening try as the referees whistle still echoed in the
Fermoy sides grounds. The side didn’t hesitate to further increase their
lead with Sinead Fitzgeralds experience and patience proved rewarding to
bring the sides score to double digits. Fermoys fearsome forwards did
however punish Youghals defiant defence and dent the score-line when
their sturdy strong running number 8 touched down which was converted
by the sides competent fly half bringing the score to a tense Fermoy-7,
Youghal-10. Sinead Fitzgerald did not let the sides momentary break in
composure cause the side angst receiving her second try of the day when
she touched down with conviction following a death defying stretch to the
try line. What transpired was a frustrating first half for Youghal that was
littered with handling errors. This hindered the fluency of the game and
would have disappointed the unmistakably stronger side to lead by such a
lowly margin.
The first notable occurrence in the second half was completed by the talented
Tamar Jayawardene when she gained the sides bonus point touching
down a try which was in truth created by the speedy backlines bursts
in play. (Fermoy-7, Youghal-20) Fermoy reliant again on their hefty pack
gained another converted try leaving the score uncomfortably close as the
game neared completion, but up stood daring Deirdre Cronin with her
resilience to nerves and clinched the sides final try leaving the gutsy
Youghal side grateful of a continued unbeaten run. The victorious side
were left dejected following the injury of two skilled players, Kate
Sheehan and Lucy Barry. Both the side and supporters will be keen to see
them recover.
Best for Youghal: Ciara O’ Flaherty and Deirdre Fitzgerald worked
together effortlessly throughout and their work rate was inspiring. Sinead
Fitzgerald completed as exceptional performance when playing confidently
out of position and to her credit gaining two tries.
Team: A. Ni lionsaigh, C. Griffen, K. Gillman, S. Fitzgerald, K. O’
Mahoney, C. O’Flaherty, A. O’ Flaherty, T. Jayawardene, L. Barry, S.
Hogan (Capt), K. Sheehan, D. Cronin.
YOUGHAL LADIES ANNIHILATE THE HIGH-
LY CREDITED DUNGARVAN SIDE
Youghal-42 Dungarvan-0 - January 15th 2012
There may have been a chill in the air at Frogmore but Youghal ladies
gave their supporters a scorching display in the sides opening game of
2012. They went into the game hell for leather with Kate Sheehan giving
the home side the opening seven points as she shimmied through the
sheepish Dungarvan defence. Fortunately Youghal didn’t hesitate in further
denting the Dungarvan oppositions aspirations of victory with the
experienced Tamar Jayawardene running in an impressive lone try from
her own half giving the home side an early 12-0 lead. Dungarvan went on
to up their intensity leaving the home side defend their own try line for
what seemed like an eternal 10minutes, Youghals ambitious forwards
hankered Dungarvans attempts with Ailbhe Ní Lionsaigh in just her second
competitive rugby game showed the composure of a pro when settling
her side by kicking to touch. Throughout Youghals simplicity too
stood to their favour when winger Deirdre Cronin received the ball following
some swift passes she accelerated up the side-line to hinder the
chances further of Dungarvan turning the tables. Youghal increased their
score by a further five points with Lucy Barry touching it down after
Youghal broke the defensive display of Dungarvans heavy duty pack.
This left the half-time score considerably in the seaside’s favour at
Youghal-22 Dungarvan-0.
Dungarvans second half display consistently lacked intensity and Youghal
were determined not to let this lack in ambition detour their desire going
on to score a further for tries from Deirdre Cronin, Tamar Jayawardene,
Kate Sheehan, Ailbhe Ní Lionsaigh. Credit to Youghal as their defence
was preserved throughout with enthusiastic play leaving the final score
Youghal-42 Dungarvan-0.
Voilá, following such a dominant display Youghal will look to capture the
magic in their next league outing.
Captain Karen O’Mahony played best for Youghal by performing faultlessly
throughout, leaving the squad looking to follow and emulate her
lead.
Team: D. Fitzgerald, C. Griffen, K. O’ Mahoney (Capt) U. Fitzgerald, C.
O’ Flaherty, A.O’ Flaherty, T. Jayawardene, S. Fitzgerald, A. Ní
Lionsaigh, L. Barry, K. Sheehan, D. Cronin.
