First Holy Communion and Confirmation 2012
The Sacrament of the Eucharist - First Holy
Communion
The word ‘communion’ means to be united with. Catholics
believe that in holy communion they are united in a special
way with Jesus Christ, that they are sharing in the body and
blood of Christ the Saviour. Holy Communion, and the
whole service (Mass) is also known as Eucharist, from a
Greek word meaning thanksgiving.
The Sacrament of the Eucharist (First Holy Communion) is
a Roman Catholic ceremony. It is the colloquial name for a
person's first celebration of the sacrament of the Eucharist.
The celebration of First Eucharist is a sacred and important
moment on a long journey of faith development. Together
with Baptism and Confirmation, it opens the door to full
membership of the Christian community. At the ceremony,
each child receives Communion, normally in the form of a
small round piece of bread placed by the Priest in the palms
of their hands.
Most Catholic children receive their First Communion when
they’re seven or eight years of age because this is considered
the age of reason. This means that most children are usually
in second class in school when they make their First
Communion.
In order for to receive communion the recipient should be
without sin and in a state of grace. Traditionally, therefore
young Catholic children will make their first confession, i.e.
the Sacrament of Reconciliation some weeks before receiving
their First Holy Communion. The Sacrament of Baptism
must also have been received before receiving the First
Communion. Click here for some suggested books on the
Aura offers free swim assessment to
children over 4 year of age
Aura Youghal is extending an open invitation to parents to bring their
children to the centre this week for a free swimming assessment with one
of their qualified swim instructors.
Families with children as young as four years of age are welcome to take
up the offer which is designed to help parents to decide on whether or not
their child could benefit from swimming lessons.
"Learning to swim is a valuable life skill and we encourage parents to do
what they can to ensure that their children learn how to swim from an
early age," said Tracy Kenneally, Operations Manager at Aura Youghal
Leisure Centre.
The free swim assessments will provide parents with a real insight into
how well their children can swim and at what level they could be enrolled
in Aura's Swim Academy.
The ten week Aura Swim Academy course is based on assigning children
to classes which reflect their ability instead of their age so that they can
learn alongside children of a similar level.
"This is a very important aspect of helping children to build their confidence
in the water. We have one of the most successful methods of teaching
children from four years of age and up how to swim," said Tracy.
"We start with the basics of making sure that children feel comfortable in
the water. They are shown how to enter and exit the pool safely, how to
float on their front and back and how to complete simple water movements,"
she added.
Aura's swim instructors also help children with their breathing techniques
and teach them how to tread water and how to develop their swim strokes.
The success of Aura Swim Academy is down to the fact that it allows children
to progress through eight levels. Each level focuses on learning and
developing new swimming skills.
Parents who wish to make an appointment for a free swim assessment for
their children or who want to learn more about how Aura's Swim
Academy can improve their child's swimming skills are welcome to call
Aura at 024 91614.
